Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2026

Apparently the Rabbitohs’ ‘art dealer’ sponsor Steve Nasteski contacted Michael Maguire today enquiring about a potential Payne Haas release before June 30..

Apparently Maguire’s response was short and blunt

Sure, when do you want him?

I'm not sure we could reproduce those pathways systems even if we wanted to.

The biggest advantage those clubs you mentioned (and pretty much every club not located in QLD) is that they have a genuine pathways to the NRL via their own teams in reserve grade (Host plus), colts etc.

We can't do that at this stage as the QRL won't allow us, the Cowboys or Titans to enter teams in the QLD cup competition.

You left off the part where they had their own Cup team and begged and demanded not to anymore.

Now they want it back.

When the NRL change anything, you complain and moan but the QRL not changing every 15 minutes and doing their due diligence- you demand rash change with no thought.

In two years when they want to go back again to having affiliates what then?

20 ****ing years ago man. Times have changed and so should we, so should the Qld Cup, so should NSW cup. The sport is stuck in the 1910's because of people like you holding the game back. Reserve grade is more important to this sport and this club specifically than QLD Cup. It's that simple.

So the clubs were wrong last time? But the QRL should listen to them now with their 0% track record of being right?

Seems good business.

How have times changed when you're calling for something they've done before?

QRL listened to them last time and you're saying that's been terrible but listen to them again and give them what they want.

Few holes for you to figure out champion.

No holes for me to figure out, it's not my job. I'm a Broncos fan and if they think a feeder club is a better idea than spreading their talent amongst three different semi-professional teams with Darren from the pub coaching them most of the week, I'm going to side with the Broncos. Also in my scenario the Queensland Cup becomes the 3rd tier of rugby league in Australia, so don't you worry about what I have to figure out. Something that hasn't been done since 1988, champion.

Haas to Souths won’t go away. This would only happen to us.

Do you think if the shoe was on the other foot Wayne would release a player to us, at the Broncos? Lol.
will go away in 1 week right? can't transfer clubs post june 30?
just turn off the phone for a week haha. yeah nah sorry was out of range.

Yep June 30.
The theory is if we lose this week, the wheels will start to turn. And who is captaining us tomorrow night? Payne.
Also, can’t forget the fact he asked for a release a couple of years back.
I can see him agitating for it to happen.

I guess the positive is we will pocket 400k to try and get Hodgo to come out of retirement.

Madge said:

“The suggestion South Sydney approached us about releasing Payne early is a load of garbage,”

Asked if he was personally approached, Maguire said:

“No, I’m not even going to entertain it.

“It makes no sense whatsoever to let Payne go.

“We’ve got a big period of footy ahead of us and Payne will be one of the players leading us through it.”

“We’re enjoying having Payne with us,” Maguire said.

“He’s been here since he was a young player and he’s been a huge part of this club.

“He’s got a smile on his face, he’s a great family man and that’s who Payne is.

“I’m not looking at next year (losing Haas to South Sydney). We’re focused on the here and now.

“We’ve got an important block of games ahead of us and like all the boys here, Payne hasn’t given up at all.

“We’re hungry to turn this around, starting against the Roosters.”

If Haas wants a release because our season is over we should take the opportunity to make a player swap deal. I really think we should try to sign Tim Johannssen. If we can secure him this way I think it'd be worthwhile.

The angle being pushed from Sydney.

Why would broncos do it?

What is the point of $300k in this year's salary cap?

Haas has played at the broncos for like 8 years... the club should be looking to give him a send offat the final home game even if we dont make the finals.

I'd be playing him for close to 80 mins a week until the end of the season. Souths can enjoy getting Haas in 2027 after being worked to death by a desperate Broncos before going straight into a WC campaign where Samoa will play him for 80 mins a game. He also came into 2026 with close to zero preseason, too.
