Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2024

Here's Tevita again, stirring the pot:

ā€œI think I could do both boxing and league. I spar twice a week and Iā€™ve played footy since I was four years old, both codes, rugby league and rugby union. Thereā€™s great coaching at Souths Logan with Karmichael Hunt. I was lucky enough to play some games for them before the Broncos bosses kicked me out in 2021. I have a lot of respect for Karmichael and Justin Hodges. ā€™Hodgoā€™ was a great competitor so I will probably go back to Souths Logan, hopefully get some wins, and then after that Iā€™ll look to play some footy for the Broncos in the NRL.ā€
"How much money do you need? I am happy at the moment. I have enough money to pay the bills and I thank my wife and my family for supporting me in boxing. I've moved out of home during the week. This shows I have enough money to pay for my own camps. My wife has kicked me out of home to work hard. Iā€™m in camp on my own. I see my family on Sundays. I know thereā€™s a lot of good heavyweights in Australia that I can be matched with. I am slowly building and giving the sport the respect that it deserves."
ā€œI am preparing as hard as I can for this next bout. This guy Suā€™a is no slouch. He will come and play his grand final against me. He is going to try and take everything from me and use my profile to push his. He has everything to gain and I have everything to lose. It will be a tough fight but Iā€™ll be ready.ā€
ā€œMy hunger is still there. This time around thereā€™s no excuses, I will be on weight and I will show people what I can do. It will be good to put on a performance for my people here in Ipswich. I used to play basketball here for Easts. I have the talent and I have the skills. The goal doesnā€™t change, I want to get that world title.ā€

Seems to be a common theme.

I've always liked TPJ as a player (when he can be bothered), but after his comments last year about how he's never loved rugby league, I've got big doubts over his commitment and willingness to do the hard yards.

Just shows the obvious difference in terms of the image one can create to the media and the true image that he creates with his peers.

Some of the things he says don't correlate at all to how he's always finding himself on the outer.

He needs to drop this media nice guy persona if he wants to make it in boxing, nobody believes he's actually a nice guy. If you're a prick you may as well turn it up and be a real prick, people might pay to see him get flogged then.

This attitude is one of the things that pisses me off. The flippant attitude that yeah after some Qcup I will be right to play for the broncos.

Noone walks into the broncos team, especially toxic people with no passion for the game.

I will be really disappointed if he ends up in a broncos jersey again.

Mundine did this as an art form and thankfully copped a few floggings as a result.

Gallen repeated it with less mouth and better boxing, surprising and forcing out respect from many, myself included.

It had to be done:

Badel reports the Broncos are in extension talks with Walsh, and he's "set to" become the highest-paid player in Broncos history with a 150% pay rise ( $1.1 million). He's been saying this for months, so it's hard to say what's changed.

Walters:

ā€œReece wonā€™t be going anywhere. Iā€™ve just mortgaged the house to keep him here. A lot of those guys who have re-signed ... Ezra is another one, we did deals for Payne and Patty last year, they are long-term players here for the club. Walshy is no different. We love having him here and he enjoys being around the place as well.ā€

Donuts:

ā€œI had never met Reece before he left for the Warriors, but when I met him for the first time and saw him walk through, it was like he never left the Broncos. Reece has done a brilliant job on and off the field at our club since he has been back. I know how diligent he is in preparing for his games, so when you see how hard he works, itā€™s no surprise to see the performances he is able to put in on the field. The challenge for Reece is to be consistent. That is something that he has as a goal for this year and no doubt ā€˜Kevā€™ will be working closely to help him achieve that. Until you walk in these guysā€™ shoes, youā€™re not sure. You donā€™t know what they are experiencing. The challenge for our club is to ensure we put the appropriate pieces around them to succeed off the field, but also on the field."
ā€œThere is no doubting Reeceā€™s popularity. Iā€™m sure he is inspiring a generation of future young fullbacks coming through. I have found him to be really grounded. I have found Reece to be really patient and accommodating for people that are wanting photos or selfies and thatā€™s an important part of being a professional footballer these days. He understands that and is taking it in his stride. I am sure there will be ups and downs with Reece, he is only a young man, but we will do everything we can to support him and help him realise his potential.ā€

Haas:

ā€œI am hopeful he signs. I want to keep Reece here, but at the end of the day thatā€™s his decision and Iā€™m not going to tell him what to do. We want him here and hopefully he does re-sign. Iā€™m confident he wonā€™t leave.ā€

Parker:

ā€œReece needs to be the highest paid player at the Broncos _ thatā€™s how you keep Reece. Name me a club out there that wouldnā€™t pay $1 million, or more, for him? I have never seen anyone with his following. There were girls running in front of the bus and screaming for his autograph. He brings eyeballs to the Broncos. I know they donā€™t need Reece for that reason, but he brings so much more than what he brings on the field. From a marketing perspective, heā€™s a dream for the Broncos. At the moment, he is fresh and shiny, but as classy as he is, he has a bit to work on as a fullback. The challenge for Reece will be repeating the brilliant season he had last year.ā€

Wild prediction....

Once Walsh makes his decision...
"Broncos under pressure to keep 1 million dollar man cobbo".... then ".....mozer/coby black... then "...haas"...

Then the cycle repeats! Weird no other club, eg clubs who haven't won a spoon in the past 4 years, aren't under such pressure. Also weird the media goes on about panthers "winning despite the turnover" yet we have had more turnover then them due to salary cap pressure despite only 1 gf vs 4 in a row... the salary cap is media driven and that's why it stays. Ridiculous system, that's why we are the only sport in the world who does it this way!

Cue pseudo Pete Badel with `no it is the fans' fault, they are driving this' in 4, 3, 2, .....

How would you report it?

How would you report it?
It was actually as much a criticism on the salary cap as it was the media's inability to investigate and provide new and informative articles to read but, seen as you ask...

I would find something with substance to report on.

But I do concede the journos in this country are just trying to keep their jobs by meeting certain KPIs and are more a victim of their environment rather then being bad journos in and of itself (eg like how rats caused the black death/plague).

So from a more global point of view...

Firstly, I think the worst thing the nrl has done in recent years is get rid of/hugely decrease their digital media. It not only gave quality content, but it gave content that wasn't fear mongering to get clicks. This also led to improved content externally as the public had higher expectations.

From a general media point of view I'd hope there is one day some competition for Rupert (before he sadly passes), which can be helped along by improved internet for streaming, and dozens of other dodgy decisions getting reversed by the government that helped Rupert monopolies the media market in this country.

Advertisers should also realise that whilst sensationalism bs does get clicks, I'd say it is highly likely more than 90% of people click out of it once they read the 1st few lines and realise that is exactly what it is, meaning they don't actually see or read most of the advertisements.

In conclusion, the journalists are doing a great job in doing what they are meant to do, it's just that what they're meant to do has nothing to do with being a quality journalist.

Investigate, report, minimise bias.

I guess I see it differently. The sports section is gossip rag to me. A bit of fluff, a bit of drama, something to keep the soap opera going. Like this thread.

Some journalists, like Dobbo, thrive off being the first with inside information. Some, like Dobbo, are terribly unreliable, but occasionally do uncover something new and juicy, and you keep tuning in.

The salary cap is a necessary evil, that punishes success. It's a work in progress, which isn't completely broken, but it could certainly use some tinkering. We will inevitably lose some players we want to keep. We have too many "guns."
