Two things .
#1 Mariner didn`t jump and let Coates launch early .Then use him as a step ladder . If he jumped Coates would have found it a lot harder to catch the ball .
#2 Staggs strolled across and watched Coates leap , then tried to stop him grounding the ball . He should have been there contesting or impeding Coates run . 1% er type shit ...

The Storm set that up perfectly though . They isolated Mariner . But I do think Staggs could have done more .
Storm definitely set up for it perfectly... I think Coates comes from so wide out and the storm centre stays really far infield to prevent Staggs from getting over there to block (still has to stay on his man).

Staggs isn't the greatest blocker as it is, but there looked to be acres of space for Coates to run into, so I can only put it down to that.

Mariner definitely should've been jumping... misjudged the contact point or something and Coates is so high up so early that he wasn't able to get into a contest with him.

I think that's where teams will have to go to defend it though... opposing winger just has to get in there and make it physical on Coates to try and disrupt him... he had free reign on Thursday

Yes I saw the structure centre infield Coates on the paint .
And yes they have to mark their man or you get what happened on the other side with Ezra taking no one .
Watch a replay Staggs jogged across once Hughes kicked .
If he had urgency I think he could have been there .

Yep. Harry Grant is pure gamesmanship. It's so fucking annoying to see him milk penalties and the referees fall for it every time.

Paps too. We had him pinned a couple of times and as soon as contact is made he flails himself to the ground and immediately tries to play it, but it should be called a surrender tackle. When the defender attempts to prevent him from moving forward or playing it off the mark (which they have the right to do in a surrender tackle) he milks it and claims interference - the ref let one of them go but pinged us for another.

It's not just Grant, it's a staple of Bellamy's coaching.

They also overstep the mark by about a meter and play the ball giving grant an opportunity with unsquare markers. Happened about a dozen times. Sick of seeing the referees let it happen
And then have the balls to call us back to play it on the mark... even though we're likely off the mark because storm won't let go

So for the post-game head to head, I've got:

1. Papenheuzen (Storm)
2. Arthars (Broncos)
3. Staggs (Broncos)
4. Meaney (Storm)
5. Coates (Storm)
6. Mam (Broncos)
7. Hughes (Storm)
8. Kamikamica (Storm) Let's be honest, the ball boy ran harder and tackled harder than Baker)
9. Grant (Storm)
10. Jensen (Broncos)
11. Katoa (Storm)
12. Riki (Broncos)
13. Carrigan (Broncos)

14. Wishart (Storm)
15. Welch (Storm)
16. Te Kura (Broncos) How good was he!
17. Oates (Broncos)

9-8 to the Storm, no wonder it was close and really shows in this sorts of match ups why it is just so important to have your big players in. You look at the above and tell me Walsh, Haas, Reynolds (for 80 mins), Piakura and Willison wouldn't make a difference.

We are in this season up to our eyeballs, just need to get these injuries behind us.
