POST GAME [Round 5, 2024] Broncos vs Storm

Agreed @Big Pete. I can’t really recall any instance like that. Point is, if Mariner just took the ball from Munster and scored, I’d be pissed if they didn’t award it.
Btw, I wasn’t aware of this change.
In the example used here, Reynolds should’ve dropped double knees on Campbell’s for being a dog and laying down. Stripped the ball and scored under the post 😂

Defending wingers will need to be just as violent back towards him then... can't just let him have free reign to make those catches every time it goes up.

If I'm an opposition winger I'm looking to just go hard into the contact whilst 'contesting' the ball... if you get him hard enough it will throw him off and his bat backs will be misdirected or knocked on... but he'll probably be higher and touching it first.

NRL have shown that they give zero ***** what happens if someone has their eyes on the ball.
This whole “own the air space” shit was really started by Slater. If you have a look all the FBs are leading with the foot to protect themselves from getting smoked. Walsh does it too. The deliberate left knee on the shoulder shit is a different story. This time it’s a fucked story as Aquaman is paying the price 😔

As long as Reece isn't moving forward with his foot out then he should be allowed to take it however he wants with his legs wherever they need to be to take it.

If he's coming forward with his foot forward karate kick style then penalise him... I'm talking 10m run up style moving forward like Coates coming forward for a catch. Most of the time Reece is going straight up and down.

If you start bringing collisions with legs into the mix then you will see dives when someone runs into a fullback's knee on a kick defusal. Dearden tried it last week when Tristan defused a bomb. You don't want a foot in your face then stay the **** out of the area or contest the ball legally.

If you're leading with your foot, knee, etc. and it contacts before a contest can even start, then I think that could be brought in as a penalty... but if they collide with your foot as you're taking it then they are late to the contest and don't have a leg to stand on.

You'll see Coates and Suaalii go up super early but use their knees to basically sit on top of the player or increase their air time... that's basically interfering with the contest and not allowing the opposition to contest for the ball.

What would be different if you kick long ?
Opposition get to within 5 metres kick it in goal , get another long drop out .

The point is not the drop out it`s defending the kicks that lead to drop outs . Kicking long isn`t going to change the repeat sets .

That fact that if you dominate the first tackle you can really control their set.

When they are 20 metres out, it doesn't matter how much you dominate the set, they're still coming at your goal line.

As for the Munster “no try”?! That was a try 💯. Not a finger on Mariner, fair game.

1000% disagree.

Mariner was on the ground, so as soon as Munster puts a finger on Mariner or the ball it is considered a tackle

If Mariner took the ball like Munster with Munster lying prone on the ground I would have been as disgusted at Mariner as I was with Munster. Can’t believe we have people praising this.

In fairness b4l, I think fans just appreciate a good heads up play. I don't think they considered Mariner's well-being because he completed the game - in hindsight that was a really brave effort from Deine.

I seriously think Klein was in the middle of deciding whether he'd penalise Howarth or not for the contact when Munster made up his mind for him.

Yep Mariner was well below his best but now we know why, he was playing with quite the injury. Respect has definitely gone up, he would have been in immense pain with just about every movement and watching him without the ball live, he could barely stand but kept brushing the trainer away. Tough kid.

Reminds me of when Hodges got stuck into a clearly injured Morris when we were playing the Dragons.

I will say stealing the ball is quite different from dropping in a shoulder.

Watching the game I was really disappointed in the defensive line speed and control of the ruck. They frequently found their front, or hands and knees in tackles. The slow line speed and quick play the balls just let them walk up the field.

Whilst our players were usually placed on their back, and were the last to get up. Once wrapped up the majority of our players just succumbed to the tackle instead of fighting to find their front.

Our back 5 really need to start putting their hand up for hard yards and just find their front and get quick play the balls, like penrith. Their back 5 usually run 150m+ each.

Carrigan, Jensen and te kura seemed the only ones generating any momentum. Expecting them to do this and also the defence will burn them out.

The next couple weeks are really maddens audition. If he is not able to organise the team and carry out game plans he may find himself on the outer.

Upon the 2024 rule change, correct, it is a tackle completed, when Mariner stays down. In this case, he might have also been taken out. All that aside, what I’m saying is, when a player just lies down, they should be fair game to have the ball stripped. They’re not according to the rules, so it is what it is.

Was Mariner hurt on the Coates try or the Howarth/Munster grubbiness? I assume the latter, although still think the former is dangerous and should be looked at.

Agree. Walters was diabolical at leading the team around last night.
I was ready to turn off when Billy came into the halves but he wasn't nearly as diabolical as I was dreading. He has zero creativity as a playmaker, and will happily shovel the ball to whoever's beside him without thinking too much. But on the plus side, he understands his old man's gameplan, doesn't get flustered, defends adequately and his kicking game, though uninspiring, is passable. Madden probably has a touch more vision and his kicking game is slightly smarter but overall I'm not sure he's an upgrade.

I think walters ability to do what he did on Thursday night makes him a great utility. The play that lead to arthars dropping the ball over the sideline was top notch from our spine, Billy included.

I think madden will get the reigns again while reyno is out but it's nice to know Billy can come on and at least execute some simple plays with our electric players. Great to see.

I wouldn't be so generous as to call him a "great utility," when I compare him to Ben Hunt, Berrigan, Benji Marshall, etc. But with Reynolds so fragile, he gets the nod over Smoothy - who is a substantially better hooker IMO - when Mozer inevitably gets his call-up. Sucks for Tyson.
