POST GAME [Round 5, 2024] Broncos vs Storm

I like the short line drop out, but the Broncos had success with Reynolds doing the kicking and targeting Farnworth last year. Haven't had as much success with Cobbo in the centres, and once Reynolds went off it was hard to imagine having much success at all.
I'm happy for the Broncos to keep trying with Reynolds doing the kicking though.

...also, should mention Arthurs try from AReys kick. Melbourne jam up inside and trust that their wingers can turn and chase or get a body check on runners.

That kick right on the edge betwen the jamming centre and exposed winger - classic set play.

Thats how you beat Melbourne - shame he couldnt last the distance.
Paps was way out of position on that as well... he's always running sideline to sideline to cover behind the wingers, but he got caught out on that play after the ball went to ground and then we scrambled it over to Reynolds... it was great hands from Tristan on that try as well

The thing about that try is that Coates fly kicks Mariner. It's reckless and dangerous, and should have been a penalty to Brisbane.
On that try, can someone with more knowledge of the rules tell if it is legal to lead with the knee when jumping into an opponent. Mariner was in obvious distress after that incident. Not sure if it was the leg coming down on him as he hit the deck though. But fair dinkum - if i want to see that sort of jump where you 'climb' onto your opponent by jumping early I'd start following fukkin AFL ariel ping pong.
If it is legal then we need to get the lions coaches over once a week to coach the likes of Riki, Te Kura and Wilison to jump like this until the NRL are forced to clamp down on it. Last night watching that shit going on really pissed me off.

The three penalties to Harry Grant which led to three tries were also pretty annoying. Kevvie's veiled dig at teh way the ruck was reffed so obviously biased did not help me either, but it does show the NRL want us in the comp, but do not want us to succeed.

Perhaps Baker was injured or still sore from last week's performance as he did go really well last week. Perhaps he's not fit enough or hard enough to go two good games in a row. If that is the case ship him off to Q Cup as last night he was a passenger in more ways than one.

What about lifting ?
Union style ? I have wondered about that since short kick offs became a thing . Or a player squatting and letting a team mate climb him to get 1st hands on the ball ?
Interesting, I wonder how the nrl would react to teams copying lineout tactics. I'd wager that lifting team mates would be banned before too long

Well, If Melbourne or Penrith did it, it’d be the most ingenious coaching initiative since Noah was a boy but if the Broncos did, it would be dangerous and deserving of a season ban.

We should just run a big sweeping play on the 5th tackle and put in through the hands. Turn the ball over in the corner or score a try.
Build pressure through a good defensive set holding a team in the corner.
Kicking it ATM we're either getting a 20m 7 tackle set or a drop out that we're not getting back.
We'd be saving energy aswell with players not having to run 50 metres to set up for a drop out then run 40 metres back to defend once we loose the drop out.
If we're the team kicking go low and hard 30m out towards a side line or even kick it as hard as you can at the guy standing 10m Infront of you and see how good his reaction and catching is.

Re Coates’ try - surely he can’t just jump up, stick a knee into a defender and take him out? (Can’t find a close up replay so not sure this is what happened…)

It's fine as long as you actually make a valid attempt to catch the ball ie arrive too early.

Did remind me of this from a couple of years ago.

'Duty of care'

Most neutrals are blowing up about the Munster no try.

Yup, Munster's was a fair try that should not have been called back IMO. He was careful not to touch Mariner so there was no tackle effected, he's entitled to take the ball. That was a shocking call.

I still can't get over the Coates try in particular though, where he was still struggling to get the ball down when Klein - who could not possibly have seen the ball on the ground - blew the whistle. The Wishart try, I couldn't make heads or tails of it, seemed very inconclusive to me and I can't see how the bunker could overturn with any confidence...but I was starting to get somewhat inebriated by that point so I don't really know lol.

Storm deserved to win. They destroyed us in all the stats and as Kev pointed out, their play-the-ball was some one full second faster than ours all game, that's a massive difference over 80 minutes of footy. We were missing our biggest metre-eater and the bloke who most of our points comes through, as well as a dynamic 2nd-rower and lost our captain and general at half time...yet we lost by 2 points and I feel primarily off the back of some questionable refereeing decisions. We are in this comp up to our fucking eyeballs and just need a bit of luck to go our way, we've had very little so far this year.

I expect us to get some good wins on the board in coming weeks and then the troops start coming back.

I'm not entirely sure what the rule is but I can't recall a player in that instance being allowed to pick-pocket a motionless player and getting away with it. Best example I can remember was Penrith trying to do it against Oates when he was heavily concussed in the 2017 FW2 game and being called back.

Regardless, Klein should have called surrender right away. Mariner was lying motionless on the ground and wasn't attempting to run. Brisbane weren't exactly looking to play on, they were appealing for a penalty after Howarth came in, made no effort to compete for the kick and made contact with Mariner while in the air. I'm also not convinced Howarth was onside to begin with.

That’s indeed what happened, AFL style

You can’t be serious. How exactly is that a fair try? You think you can legally or should be able to steal the ball off a motionless player? That’s ridiculous.

Well that Coates take has injured Mariner....
