Part of me wonders whether they did it on purpose to snub the NRL/ARL, and in Brett Stewarts case, he probably realised he was never going to oust Slater out of the team, so what's the point.

Well G. Stewart's pregnant missus is having health issues, so can understand that. But Brett...pfft. His "knee injury" can't be that serious that he can't see out the tour and get it treated afterwards. Players like him result in people like Ari Gold undervaluing the Kangaroos jumper. Should have to be assessed by ARL doctors about whether or not they can see out the tour and play...only if they can't do that can they withdraw. Whether they will be fit for round 1 next year is irrelevant.

Its less about undervaluing the value of a Kangaroo Jumper, more just the value (or there lack of) of winning in one.

But let's be honest - who thinks Stewart would do this if it were a post finals Origin series? I honestly think he would play if it were SoO, because it's something players want to experience winning. A test match win? To some players, sure just as important, but to others, just not on the same level. Which is why international league will continue to be the inferior version of the game.

New Zealand have lost stars Shaun Johnson, Manu Vatuvei and Steve Matai for the rugby league Test against Australia.

The trio, who contested the NRL grand final, were all ruled out of the clash with the Kangaroos in Newcastle, as well as the Four Nations tour after failing team medicals on Friday.

Thats a shame. I love watching johnson and vatuvei play
