Young 99kg forward Patrick Carrigan has starred for our Broncos’ National Youth Competition Under 20s team, winning the club’s NYC Best Forward and NYC Player of the Year Awards at Friday night’s Broncos Presentation Ball.
The 18-year-old who can play at either lock or prop, dominated in the Number 13 jersey this year, despite the Broncos U20s missing out on the finals when they finished in 9[SUP]th[/SUP] spot with 11 wins, one draw and 12 losses – four of them being tight one or two point affairs.
It’s a remarkable double achievement for Carrigan considering he didn’t actually debut for the Broncos U20s until Round 7 against the U20s Knights, coming off the bench at home, as the team narrowly lost 18-19.
Carrigan continued as an impact interchange player - giving 30 to 50 minutes per game - right up until Round 19 against the U20s Rabbitohs away in Sydney, where they ran out big victors 52-20.
In Round 20, Carrigan started at lock against the U20s Panthers and never looked back, making this starting position his own until Round 26 as the team recorded three wins and a draw to round out the year.
The Easts Tigers Junior and Queensland Under 18s prop forward finished his 2016 Broncos season with 18 games for two tries, 215 runs, 1991 run metres, one line break, 196 hit-ups, 15 tackle breaks and 480 tackles at an average of 27 per game.
It’s a little known fact that Carrigan arises at 2am to work at the Rocklea Markets before going to University followed by Broncos training on weekdays.
Speedy young 93kg centre Gehamat Shibasaki was the deserving winner of the club’s NYC Best Back Award after playing every game this year in the Number 4 jersey.
Shibasaki racked up 24 games for 14 tries, 334 runs, 3245 run metres, 14 line breaks (second best), a brilliant 11 try assists (second best), a superb 122 tackle breaks (second best), two hit-ups, 11 offloads and 286 tackles at an average of 12 per game.
Those 14 tries made him the equal second-highest try-scorer for our NYC team. However, his 334 runs for 3,245 run metres gained was an absolute stand-out, making the Shibasaki outside back ‘juggernaut’ easily the number one ‘metre-eater’ from all the young Broncos U20s players.
The 18-year-old who can play centre or fullback, also holds representative honours, being in the Queensland U18s Schoolboys and QLD U18s State of Origin teams.
Shibasaki will actually commence his 2017 pre-season training with our NRL First Grade squad after a stellar year on the field.
Finally, young hooker Kalolo Saitaua won the Broncos’ NYC Players’ Player of the Year Award.
Saitaua achieved 22 games this season in the Under 20s scoring an impressive 14 tries (equal second) in the Number 9 jersey while making 186 runs, 1663 run metres, 15 line breaks (second highest), and a very handy 8 try assists (third best).
But where Saitaua really excelled was his amazing team-leading 30 offloads and his top-ranking 128 tackle busts, plus a huge work rate in the middle with 565 tackles at an average of 26 per game.
The 20-year-old who played his junior footy for Auckland’s Ellerslie Eagles Club, works as an apprentice barber and was one of the more experienced players in the team this year, playing his third and final season of NYC U20s footy.
Congratulations to all three Broncos NYC Under 20s Players!
