2017 Line-up

We simply need a forward pack that will lay a platform for our halves to work.

Outside of out 8, 10 and 13 nothing needs to change.

No huge changes but Kahu deserves a crack at centre full time and Mead is exactly what we need on a wing.

is everyone forgetting how good Gilli is at lock? I think Glenn should start on the left with Gillo at 13. Both can play 80 minutes. I didn't mind the suggestion of Blair at lock too. I agree with the majority, we do need a real impactful prop though. Someone that can churn out big metres. It's the off season so here is a team list:

1. Boyd (c)
2. Oates
3. Kahu
4. Roberts
5. Oates
6. Milford
7. Hunt
8. Big new prop
9. Macca
10. Blair
11. Glenn
12. Thaiday
13. Gillett

14. Niko
15. Moose
16. Pangai
17. Offa / Esse Esse

and please father Wayne, bring us Ponga for Christmas.

do people think Oates is ready for the second row yet? Does he offer to much on wing?

Don't know if he's ready for second row but covering both wings will be tough...

Just on the talk of signing a prop. Someone earlier mentioned Matulino. I just read on another forum he could be on the outer at the warriors. If true he would be worth a look. At his best he was one of the form front rowers in the comp, not sure why he has dropped off so much this year. Bennett could work wonders with him and we have a good group of kiwi boys here to get in his ear! Matulino, Napa, Vaughn... Please sign one...

Matulino would be a dangerous signing, he has a very relaxed work ethic and comes from that warriors system.

'Premiership Windows' isn't a term I really like but I do believe they exist and can be manipulated by teams through diligent use of the salary cap, roosters are great examples of this. I don't see us as competition threats next year so for mine I think 2018 and on should be the goal. IMO the retirement of Parker should see the curtain call on this pack, it got close but it's certainly time to introduce some new faces.

I'd be okay with sticking with what we have next year and not renewing Blair, Glenn, Ofahenguae & convince Thaiday to retire a year early.

2018 potentially:

1. Boyd
2. Oates
3. Kahu
4. Opacic
5. Pearson
6. Milford
7. Hunt
8. New Prop
9. McCullouch
10. New Prop
11. TPJ
12. Gillett
13. Arrow

14. McGuire
15. Nikorima
16. Fai/Funaki/Ese'ese (whoever can show they want it more)
17. Su'a

Your confident that bench will keep the teams roll when they come on? Or if the starting packs being dominated that bench can turn the ascendancy and momentum our way?

1. Boyd
2. Oates

3. Opacic/Kahu
4. Roberts/Kahu - (These spots can be fought over/tinkered with in the preseason (I do rate Pearson though))
5. Kahu/Pearson

6. Milf
7. Hunt

8. Vaughan -Would really like to see him in our front row.
9. Macca
10. Blair
11. Gillett -Would make our left side even better - has good hands and can protect Milf + Oppa in defence.
12. Thaiday -While he's been great the last month, I feel he + Hunt can simulate what he does in Origin
13. Moose -So long as we sign another starting prop, Moose can go to lock. Guy's built for it

14. Arrow
15. TPJ
16. Glenn
17. Ese'ese

1. Milford
2. Mead
3. Boyd (been in very good form but isn't getting younger or faster and Milford has a higher potential peak as fullback)
4. Roberts
5. Kahu
6. Nikorima (paid for him time to use him properly or move him on)
7. Hunt
8. New monster prop
9. McCullough
10. Blair
11. Thaiday
12. Gillett
13. McGuire (bulk up Glenn as centre forward if no new prop)

14. Oates (can cover wing if backline injury)
15. TPJ
16. Glenn
17. Ese/Offa
18. Sua
19. Arrow (shown nothing yet needs to go back to Q cup)
20. Opa

There's no doubt we need huge front rowers, and we need to make some immediate signings to bolster our forward back for next year.

If we want a player similar to Taumalolo, but who'll be significantly cheaper, I'd chase extremely hard after Sio Siua Taukeiaho as a replacement for Parker. I've said it before and i'll say it again, he's the only one in the competition who can come up with Taumalolo like runs. No one else comes remotely close to Taumalolo except Taukeiaho. He has footwork, speed, power and explosiveness similar to Taumalolo and he can goal kick pretty well too. We can use him in a rotation with TPJ. Just the prospect of that is mouthwatering.

I think signing both Vaughan and even Napa is a must. If not Napa then Tagataese or JWH. I've also mentioned signing Fensom since I'm not convinced Arrow can transition full time into a 80 minute lock this quickly. I'd take him in a heartbeat as he's defence will stiffen up our middle third.

... and the Dogs had a huge pack. Where did it get them? Look what we did in '15, and the Storm a few weeks ago.

We just gonna disregard the fact that Taukeiaho did his ACL in Round 25 and probably won't even play a game next season?

Hunt's in a unique position.

Yes, he's been apart of the first grade system since 2009, but he's only been used as a dedicated half-back since 2014. It's been three years and despite what some may think, he hasn't been horrific over the course of any of those seasons.

He's got areas of his game that need to be worked on, true but so did all the greats. A lot of them, the Fittlers, Thurstons, Lyons, Lambs etc. worked it out and played their best footy as they got older, it isn't out of the cards for Ben Hunt.

Put it this way, Shaun Johnson hasn't led the Warriors to a finals series since 2011 and he's around the same age as Ben Hunt. Nobody fears about his future in the game.

That isn't to say the skepticism isn't warranted, just a little over-stated.

Johnson is an excellent comparison Pete and personally I don't think he can get the Warriors over the line any more than Hunt can get us there.
Both exceptional players but decision making and consistently getting it right under pressure not there yet.
Obviously it might come but how long do you persist. 1 more year at least I suspect.

[FONT=&amp][FONT=&amp]HANDING the Broncos’ captaincy to Ben Hunt or Andrew McCullough can fast-track the new generation leadership at a club which has to rebound from two agonising finals exits, says club legend Darren Lockyer.

A member of the Broncos recruitment and retention committee, Lockyer backed Hunt and Anthony Milford, both off contract for 2018, to lead his old club to a premiership.
But he said the halves needed to improve their game management to guide Brisbane to their premiership since 2006, Lockyer said.
“Darius (Boyd) has put his hand up with leadership credentials and probably was our best player in the second half of the year,’’ Lockyer said.

“(But) it’s probably a good opportunity to start developing younger players in leadership roles, like Ben Hunt and Andrew McCullough.

Ben Hunt should be considered for the Broncos captaincy, says Darren Lockyer.“Darius, Ben, Andrew and Sam (Thaiday) would be in the mix.
“They all have different qualities ... (and) whether it’s Hunt or McCullough, the extra responsibility would be good for their evolvement as leaders.’’
Coach Wayne Bennett must find a new leader after the retirement of stalwart Corey Parker.
Lockyer said Johnathan Thurston’s greater experience had helped thwart Brisbane in both the 2015 grand final and Friday’s semi-final loss.
“I read a stat last week that in their previous three games against the Cowboys, the Broncos kickers had forced no line dropouts and the Cowboys had eight.
“In Friday’s game, the Cowboys forced the only two line dropouts of the game,’’ he said.
“It’s that mentality of building pressure. Our young halves are a work in progress, but need to be better.
“Milford is only in his second year at No.6.
“Hunt has been there a little longer (three seasons as starting halfback). They will get better at closing games out.

Andrew McCullough should be considered as a replacement for Corey Parker as captain.“They came up against a guy who is not only brilliant but has experience on his side.
“I think Hunt and Milford were better at managing games this year than they were last year. “Another couple of years, they become among the most experienced halves.
“What JT (did, setting up the winning try in extra time) was the clutch play from the best in the game.’’
The Broncos will do well to hold both halves, given that 12 other first graders come off contract along with Hunt and Milford at the end of 2017.
Milford made a slashing line break in the 77th minute of Friday night when Brisbane led by two points, but the play broke down.
Hunt also made a surging run when the Cowboys led 26-20 with three minutes left of extra time, but turned the ball over.
Milford’s total of 18 handling errors this year is second only to Tiger Mitchell Moses (20) among NRL players, but he is widely regarded as the game’s next $1 million a season player.

Lockyer's nothing more than media mouthpiece now saying only what he believes the public want to hear.

Can't see how Hunt can captain a team with the amount of face palm moments he produces a game.

I just don't see it. Can't take the bloke seriously after the amount of benny hill moments he's had.

Good lord, if we make Hunt captain it's all over, he struggles immensely with his responsibilities already.

Massive love for Locky as a player, but as a media personality, little that he says should be taken seriously. Boyd and Thaiday should be the only candidates for the captaincy. Hands down.
