2017 Line-up

1. Boyd - His organisation is worth mentioning - otherwise everyone else has covered what needs to be said.
2. Mead - Great signing imo. Good pace, can finish.
3. Roberts - Didn't have the type of year we were hoping for. Potential goes without saying. Our perspective is clouded by high expectations, but not as bad as some make out. Backing him to bounce back.
4. Kahu - All the love around here's justified. Can put his winger away better than most in the Comp.
5. Pearson - I'm not sold on him yet. But seems to have okay potential. Will need to step up next year.
6. Milf - Still young. Needs to mature. But an improvement on last year as a half. Expecting the same again next season. Will hopefully work on kicking and handling some more. Needs to take more pressure off Ben - our last great game manager played 6, it's not just the 7's resonsability. Will take years to develop, but I expect another step up in this area next year.
7. Hunt - As mentioned by others he plays best when his forwards get momentum and can utilise his running game. Third full season as a half - people forget how long it took the greats we oft compare him to, to develop the kind of game management were all wanting. Think Locky, Thurston early in their careers. We all remember their final form - but their game management developed later in their careers as they rellied less on their running games. Was always going to be a tough year to bounce back from.
8. Moose - I agree he's better taking second or third hit up.
9. Macca - Defence is missed when he was off the field this year. CAN HE PLEASE KICK THE FREAKING BALL MORE. First kick on Friday aside has a great kicking game. Can he only put boot to ball on a full moon or something? Severely under-utilised. Also, with our halves, we don't need much creativity from the 9 imo - if theres an opportunity they need the ball in their hands. His lack of spark in attack is not an issue for mine.
10. Insert behemoth here. Don't rate Vaughan has highly as others, but has the raw ingredients. We all agree Bennett's a prop whisperer so wouldn't mind seeing what he can do.
11. Thaiday - Vintage form. I get mad thinking about some of his best years being wasted at prop - but shows his quality as a clubman that he did so without complaint. Probably hurt his back pocket playing there.
12. Blair - Was at his best on the edges (Storm days). Can better utilise his good hands and creativity for a big man. Gives us some more size. The closer he is to the opposing halves, the easier he can go for the jugular.
13. Gillo - Workrate and defence has been mentioned enough. For team balance I'd prefer some size here considering it's lacking in our pack - but I think is the best option.
14. Niko - Signed for two years. Best thing for the team is for him to go all out on playing hooker. Spend off season in the gym and tackling. Worth him losing a yard of pace if it means he can do more in defence. Can become what Seggy should have been if he does.
15. Oates - My only concern is his proclivity for injury. Seems to love the contact. Could be a top notch hole runner. Should be his first full off season in a while. Add some more size to his frame to keep bending the line against forwards. Love him on the wing, but this is where he belongs.
16/17. - TPJ/Herman/Fai/Offa (Whoever else I am forgetting that plays prop).

Glenn - I agree has been in some of his best form of late. But we are just too stacked in the second row with players who offer more than him. Could slot into Nikos spot perhaps, but as much as I love him we have to move him on for the sake of team balance. If we don't sign a prop he goes to lock, Blair to prop gillo back to edge. Would suggest moving him on, paying some of his wage if need be, and using the remainder to help sign a front rower.

Opacic - Good start to his career but a fringe first grader for mine. Milfs third year defending in the front line, less of a need to have a defensive centre help him out. Kahu too good putting his man away to have on the wing, and opacic isn't a winger he's a centre. Will get games during origin and injury.

Arrow - decent prospect, but again we have too many like him. Will get game time throughout the year during origin/injuries/suspension, but need to spend most of the year in Q Cup. I hope we keep him, but doesn't suit the balance of our team at this point in time.

We need two props on the bench I think. Is an unfortunate position to be in that they will both be babies, but nothing we can do about that - we have some good prospects. I really hope TPJ steps up as need one of his size - but he's a long way off I am not expecting miracles next year.

If we don't sign a prop - which is a very real possibility - Blair will have to stay there, Gillo to the edge and Glenn to lock. But that's less than ideal.

We just gonna disregard the fact that Taukeiaho did his ACL in Round 25 and probably won't even play a game next season?

An ACL is a 6-9 month injury. He'll more than likely play next season. Regardless, an injury is hardly a reason not to sign someone. They'll still play a part in the team in the future once they overcome the injury.

It's 9 months if you're lucky, 12 months if you aren't, name me one example of someone back fully fit playing any sport 6 months after a ruptured ACL.

I agree McCullough needs to kick more. His drop punt is a lot smoother than hunts. I'd even like to see hunt go to dummy half on last tackle occasionally to pass it to Macca for a clearing kick.

Or just have Macca kick from dummy half

1. Milford
2. Mead
3. Boyd (been in very good form but isn't getting younger or faster and Milford has a higher potential peak as fullback)
4. Roberts
5. Kahu
6. Nikorima (paid for him time to use him properly or move him on)
7. Hunt
8. New monster prop
9. McCullough
10. Blair
11. Thaiday
12. Gillett
13. McGuire (bulk up Glenn as centre forward if no new prop)

14. Oates (can cover wing if backline injury)
15. TPJ
16. Glenn
17. Ese/Offa
18. Sua
19. Arrow (shown nothing yet needs to go back to Q cup)
20. Opa

so your idea is to move the worlds best fullback to centre?

Nick Malceski, AFL player.

Look up LARS surgery

You mean the surgery that places a synthetic ligament in your knee, only to fail 100% of the time further down the track, requiring another full knee reconstruction?

Yeah dunno why I didn't think of that, that's definitely what players should be doing..

There's no need to get salty because I answered the exact criteria of your question.

Well technically you didn't, you aren't fully fit if you've got a synthetic time bomb in your knee, but you get an A for effort.

Boyd is very good but he isn't an all time great fullback. He is the best at the moment largely by default.

A fit Slater or Inglis (and motivated) are easily superior. Tedesco, Moylan, RTS, Hayne and Milford all have more ability at fullback to turn a game.

Boyd's strength is organisation in defence and the same slide play. He doesn't clean up kicks as well as he should and is an average support runner.

He he is also 30 and never been a true speedster. He won't get faster or more explosive in attack but he can put someone away with the right pass, defends well and can organise the defensive line sounds like a good centre to me, plus we get Milford free to tear it up at fullback. Milford can become a ball playing fullback a lot more than Boyd and take the pressure off Hunt and Knik.

Never going to happen, Bennett wouldn't do it to his love child.

Can't see us winning a premiership with both Milford and Hunt in halves. Besides don't think Milf is happy getting smashed at five-eight and I don't blame him. It's not worth losing 10 years of likely superstar Milford for a couple of years of really good Boyd at fullback.

I was one of the people calling for Milford to play fullback when he came over, but we need a half to replace him then. Nikorima just seems like KiwiMilford, so it would make no difference, we'd have another Justin Bieber back-up dancer there.

IMO,

We will never win a premiership with Ben Hunt as halfback.

We will never win a premiership with Josh McGuire in the front row.

We will never win a premiership with Andrew McCullough at hooker.

I'm convinced 2/3 of those statements above are true. I'm not sure which ones though.

Can Blair play 80min (or close to) on the edges or lock? He appears pretty fit.

He has been in my opinion our best forward over the season as a whole. I dig his work rate, intensity, aggression, and the 1%'s. I want him on the field as much as possible.

I'm not convinced we need to buy a big prop to win the comp. I won't go into it now. But if we do and the following is our starting pack, with a rotation of our up and comers plus Glenn on the bench, I would be stoked.

8. McGuire
9. Macca
10. Big-er-er bloke
11. Thaiday
12. Gillette
13. Blair

On current form I can't see any of our young forwards replacing any of these guys in the starting side.

The backline is difficult. I don't really want to leave Opacic out but I feel Kahu should be given first shot at centre, and if Roberts and Mead combine well on the right their speed combined will be lethal. For the forwards I think it's time to look to the future at lock so Pangai Jr should be given the opportunity to make it his spot, but he needs to work his balls off in the off season. We really need to sign a big prop so here's hoping someone like Napa gets picked up.

I think it's way too early to chuck Pangai into the starting side. He's got massive potential, but he hasn't impressed THAT much yet. Wayne doesn't seem to pick someone just based on their potential either, they have to really impress him first. If TPJ improves, and lives up to his hype, he could be starting late next year or the year after (if he's still with us).
