He will need to pack on a bit more weight in order to do that.

Perhaps that is still on the cards which could explain why he has come back a bit bigger.

apparently the plan was to transition him into the forwards ... however the speculation is now the put that on hold 12 months because he lost the pre-season to shoulder surgery

I think Bird will play primarily in centres this year, possibly some games at fullback if Boyd isn't fit. But next year (2019) I think he will move in to the lock position with Thaiday leaving. I don't see the Broncos renewing Oates to be honest. He will demand huge money for a position he is essentially untrialed in (at least not recently)..
