2018 NRL Side

A leak says that we are playing Dragons round 1.

Its on daily telegraph so i dont know if its true actually.

Does anyone think Shibaski will get a run next year?

I think he has been a bit disappointing this year. A lot of people at the club were expecting him to really push for a starting spot, and he just didnt. I think it was Hodges who said he would be shocked and disapointed if he didnt make first grade this year, and he hasnt come close really. On this years showing, i think unless we get a heap of injuries, he wont get a run. Next year is a new start though, so if he can impress in the trials, he has a fair chance.

If we move Oates i dont think it would be a bad option to bring him in on the left wing to start learning what NRL football is all about. Didnt to Cotric any harm.

Fairly sure Opacic is going to get first crack at left center because it wont be Bird. Seve isnt good enough, neither is Pangai so Tommy is the logical choice unless we are planning to bring Issako, Pearson or Mead onto the right wing and move Kahu over.

By using the ball better. He isnt going to be a Peptide Gallen workhorse type like who makes lots of meters, which is what a lot of people think of when you mention the lock role.

I believe we are going to look to the past and play him at lock like we used to see somebody like Ellery Hanley play. Basically playing the lock role more like a five eighth like it used to be. Bird is tough enough to be strong enough in defence, but he has the ability with the ball to make our attack more potent.

What an excellent post. And it is great to find someone who recalls possibly the greatest forward who ever played the game in Ellery Hanley. I hope that Bird does take on that style of lock play. Moose just lost us so many opportunities in attack with his one-out shit.

However, having said that, we had, and we will have the player roster to win a premiership. It's the coaching staff, the game plan that seriously worries me. Doesn't matter who plays where - if we don't adopt a game plan which maximises our many strengths (Bird, Milford, Gillett to name just 3) we will end up in '18 exactly where we did this year.

The Brits had some very good players in that era with Hanley around tbf. Davies, Offiah, Edwards, Gregory all really good footballers.

Hope so hes a gun
He hasn't impressed me in the games I've seen, along with Allen. I think they both have talent as they have some really nice touches at times (long balls, steps, tackle busts, hole running moments) but neither of them stay in games.

But if you thought moga or Hoffman didn't pass, shibasaki Is next level!

This years World Cup combined with injuries could prove to be a bit of a pain in the ass for us I think. Probably means that milf and Macca through injury and kodi through the kiwis will have a very reduced pre season with us. Not ideal for a relatively new combination which requires plenty of work. Hopefully with a host of big names missing the start of the pre season some of the younger guys will be put under some pressure and forced to step up giving us some real depath and strong competition for spots in the squad.

I’m sure for the $50,000 per game they’re being paid to play this World Cup, they’ll get over their long season pretty quick

This is a bit off topic but ,

Kahu is a great goal- kicker but could get better .
We should bring in A Dan carter or someone like that who were nearly perfect in goal kicking

6. Anthony Milford

14. Kodi Nikorima
15. Alex Glenn
16. Patrick Mago
17. Joe Ofahengaue

Troy Dargan - Kicking game and natural halfback. Can do what Milford struggles at.

Nikorima #14 - Lethal off the bench at hooker and can cover halves and fullback if injury occurs. Yet to master a kicking game.

Lodge #8 - Just going to assume Bennett is signing him with the intention to use him to replace Blair. I don't really agree with the signing, but in terms of football, he's the kind of prop we need. ( Big + Aggressive )

Tevita Pangai #13 - Our answer to Taumalolo. The modern day lock. Not only can he barge over the opposition and step like a back, he can offload and create opportunities for our backs.

Sims #11 - I think with the addition of Lodge and Pangai Junior to our starting side along with Sims shifting from prop to backrow squashes any thought of our pack being too small.

Oates & Bird - The left edge combination of Jack Bird and Corey Oates would be slick in attack and solid in defence. Both big bodies capable of playing in the forwards.

Glenn #15 - I see Glenn as more of a utility forward on the bench like what Mitch Aubusson has been for the Roosters. He is not big enough to take the hard hit ups and usually is stopped in his tracks or driven backwards. Would come on for Sims at some point in the game. Jaydn Su'a should be next in line for that role.

Patrick Mago - On the bench as a replacement for Tevita Pangai at lock during the game. Replacing a wrecking ball with another wrecking ball.

Thaiday - I am sick of watching him make mistakes for us. Has been a beneficiary of the Broncos and QLD dominance. Is past his best and looks like he's just trying to keep up with the young talent and is failing.

We have to take risks in order to win the comp next year.

He simply isn't ready to start ... and it has nothing to do with talent, it is all to do with his fitness level. At this stage of his career, he needs to stay an impact bench weapon

Kahu is having g off-season surgery to correct leg and groin conditions that hampered him significantly this year. If successful I imagine this is will help in this regard as well...

Its an interesting team but what happens when an injury to 3/4 back happens? There seems s lot of specialisation on the bench and a disagree with your comment on glen. He has been fine for us. He's just not a front rower and its seems our 2nd row is expected to play as front rowers, sometimes this season. Some good metres up the middle from our front rower and glen is easily capable of taking advantage, and offloading/linking with others.

All we need to do is convince him to play for a quarter of the money he is currently, relocate from France to Brisbane and learn how to play league. Will definitely be worth the extra 10% accuracy in goal kicking

I do like the idea of trialling Sims in the second row/lock though, he could be a good stop gap in tandem with TPJ until TPJ's motor improves.

Well, I can't say I hate it. @Thelmus, if a centre goes down we can easily put Glenn there. He's an excellent stop gap. More complicated would be Nikorima to fullback and Boyd to centre.

Only a couple of small rebuttals, but they're only minor:

* Sims may not have the mobility to play on the edge. He's played a fair bit there for the Knights, but I didn't see enough to recall how successful he was there. Better workrate of course, but bigger minutes too. On the plus side, if he could get his positioning right, and communicate with Milford well, he's be a bloody handy bodyguard for him. No one likes running at Sims. The tackles he makes he has to go and find them.

* I'm on the "TPJ needs more fitness before he can start" train. In fact, he really does seem too willing to risk low-percentage, high-skill plays, so he needs a bit of maturity too. We really could have done with Arrow this year. I will say that I was very surprised how much of a difference there was in 2017 TPJ, Offa and HE'E compared to the 2016 versions. If there's a similar amount of improvement, maybe the off-season will be enough to get TPJ There.

I'm with you with Bird at left centre. If it's his best position, why not?
