I think there is the potential for us to be very mediocre. Blair and Hunt gone. Thaiday on the decline. Relying on Lodge to deliver who hasn't played NRL for three years. For me it's worrying. But I understand lots of people on here completely disagree.

How does having Bird play lock help our go forward?

By using the ball better. He isnt going to be a Peptide Gallen workhorse type like who makes lots of meters, which is what a lot of people think of when you mention the lock role.

I believe we are going to look to the past and play him at lock like we used to see somebody like Ellery Hanley play. Basically playing the lock role more like a five eighth like it used to be. Bird is tough enough to be strong enough in defence, but he has the ability with the ball to make our attack more potent.

It’ll be a welcome reawakening to the traditional lock role, rather than a third prop. Glenn Stewart was a master of that middle ball player role for Manly years ago. It will definitely make the middle more dynamic.

Pretty sure Watmough was their lock - he had the 11 on his back but played in the middle. Glewart was often at second row on the right, shovelling it towards Jamie Lyon's torso or throwing it to his brother Brewart if he hadn't already fallen over with some kind of leg injury.

Watamong only took the lock role towards the end of Stewart's career at Manly. Stewart was definitely the roving lock/five-eight I'd love to see Bird become.

Is Nick the smallest player in the NRL?

I just can't get excited about him being our number 7. I'm not saying he lacks potential but the days of Alfie sized halves were back in the 90's?
