2018 NRL Side

Bird could have been from anywhere and they wanted him simple as that. You recruit for gaps in your team and price not geography.

Basing recruitment around Smith, Slater and Thurston to win a few games a year seems a bit out there.

Uh.. what? Who said we signed Bird because he was from NSW and we should recruit players based on where they're from.. wtf? I swear just make things up in your head as you go

Just that part where he said we are deliberately recruiting New South Wales players and thought it was a good plan.

Which was why I asked the question.

He never said that either, it's another thing you've just made up. He listed it as an added benefit of signing NSW players, not something that we should be using as a primary reason to sign players outside of QLD. :/

1. Boyd
2. Oates
3. Bird
4. Roberts
5. Kahu
6. Milford
7. Nikorima
8. Ofahengaue
9. McCullough
10. Sims
11. Glenn
12. Gillett
13. McGuire

14. Thaiday
15. TPJ
16. Su'a
17. Opacic

Two cents..

Need to make sure the pack is a strong as possible to give the backline enough room. Would be waste to play Bird at lock if he's just going to be used in the middle third as another prop. Reckon it'd leave the forwards too lightweight.

Rest kind of names itself. Opacic as the "utility" on the bench. Good enough defender to play in the backrow at a pinch, can cover centre and wing. Bird can cover halves/lock and Nikorima hooker if there needs to be shuffling mid-game.
Nice team, the only change I would make would be TPJ starts over Joe offa

I disagree, crediting guys for thinking of it and thinking it's deliberate with reasons why it's a good plan indicates to me he thinks it's a major reason not just a wish list moment.

Where dose this new pomie recruit fit into the team? From all reports he's bring much needed impact

This was the 20s origin side this year

1 Nick Meaney (Newcastle Knights)
2 Isaac Lumelume (Cronulla Sharks)
3 Jesse Ramien (Cronulla Sharks)
4 Curtis Scott (Melbourne Storm)
5 Reuben Garrick (St George Illawarra Dragons)
6 Jai Field (St George Illawarra Dragons)
7 Troy Dargan (Parramatta Eels)
8 Emre Guler (Canberra Raiders)
9 Reece Robson (St George Illawarra Dragons)
10 Blake Lawrie (St George Illawarra Dragons)
11 Cameron Murray (South Sydney Rabbitohs)
12 Jack Murchie (Canberra Raiders)
13 Nat Butcher (Sydney Roosters)
14 Victor Radley (Sydney Roosters)
15 Ray Stone (Parramatta Eels)
16 Stefano Hala (Penrith Panthers)
17 Billy Magoulias (Cronulla Sharks)
18 Jai Whitbread (Brisbane Broncos

Curtis Scott would be a good pickup

Wouldn't New South Wales be winning Origin games if your theory was correct?

The only reason QLD wins in origin is because of our spine, and we ain't signing anyone in the current spine, altho we do have Boyd, Milf (he should be first choice 5/8 after Cronk retires with Munster at FB), and potentially Macca who are/ could be future mainstays for QLD. We should have Smith right now, but Bellamy had a 'chat' with him, so that dream is dead. The NSW forward depth and quality is shockingly better than QLD's. NSW also have better outside backs, but their selectors are idiots and go with blokes like Morris, Fergo, and Dugan.

I don't really know anything about the NSW U20s backs, but our depth there isn't particularly great, so welcome whoever you are.

What on earth are you talking about?

Locky was simply making the point that having young NSW born players who have grown up hating the QLD greats in our team might be a handy thing to have when it comes to playing against them, as they won't have the same level of respect towards them as young QLD players. It has nothing to do with State of Origin, he's talking about club footy.

NSW players not showing any respect towards our greats in Origin doesn't make a difference, because we have far too many of them and are far too good, but in club footy something as small as that could be the added edge required to beat the Storm / Cowboys.
Where has all this we respect them too much to play hard against them come from anyway??

It can't be player interviews because the same lines trotted out by the respectful qlders are repeated by the disrespectful NSW ie they are legends of the game and we have to shut them down if we are a chance to win.

The only mention I can recall was from Gordy (I believe) who came out on Matty Johns or something before the prelim that they should put their respect aside and play the jersey rather than the player.... and if that is the basis of all this then I'd take it with less than a grain of salt.

To me it would be more of an ingrained fear of those players, and not just broncos but across the league, the fear being no matter the situation they can still beat you if the game is close.

We currently don't have anyone that strikes that fear into the opponents whereas previously we had Lockyer, Alfie, etc.

I don't buy into this BS respect because their qld greats. They respect their abilities but that doesn't mean they play beneath themselves because their in awe.

Do teams play lesser when GI is on the field, no they respect that he can blow a game open with 1 run. That's respecting the opposition's ability brought about by fear of what they can and have done to previous opposition

Yes I got that; so wouldn't New South Wales with 17 New South Welshman be doing that? If Three in the Broncos team are going to improve the side shouldn't 17 be doing it too?
Remember when the sharks, roosters or Souths beat the Queensland maroons for their premierships?

What are you even talking about? Seriously haha

First premiership team had four in; O'Neill, Matterson, Johns and Lazarus. Even the first Broncos' team had three in the side. It's not that uncommon.

Yep I hear ya, we've always had the odd one or two now and then down the years as well like Devere, Ennis, and Clinton and probably a few more. I was just saying that we seem to have more now than ever. Next year we're basically a form slump and an injury or two away from having both NSW centres!

I have never been a big fan of Kahu in the centres due to his injury concerns. Next year though seems a good year for Kahu to put his hand up to play centre. He can get more ball and show his good foot work and ball handling. With his recent time off and preseason coming up he may be the player to take the spot.

Is Opacic back in action next year? If good to go, hopefully he'll get first crack at centre. Hell if Bennett stuck with Moga all year after horrendous game after game, surely he can get a run and stick with him for a while. I think he's a pretty decent centre and would make it his own ala Reed if given the chance to stick around.

Read somewhere we might be in the running to pick up Alex Walmsley from super league. Just been named in England WC squad. Other clubs are also lining up for his signature, Bennett might have an advantage if he’s interested.

So other clubs interested are pretty much the entire NRL.
