2018 NRL Side

It will be interesting to see who get first shot in the backs in that month bird is missing. The doors open for someone to make a mark. It will probably be kahu to centre and mead on the wing, but then we thought that 1st game of last season too.

Opacic was going to start at centre for us last season but was injured. Moga got his shot and cemented his place in the side. Opacic may get to redeem his centre position

To be honest, I don't think Opacic has done too many things wrong and is dead unlucky to be fighting for a spot on the fringes. I would love to see him get a shot, but who knows? I'm betting if he doesn't get the chance to crack it into the 1st-grade side, he will be looking elsewhere and who could blame him. Still, if there's someone better, then that's rugby league. He's been a bit like a few others before him who were almost, but not quite. Nick Kenny is one who comes to mind (prop I know but the same in that injury happened at the worst times). Im, sure there have been others down the years.

WAYNE Bennett’s $3 million recruit Jack Bird is set to take centre stage for the Broncos.
Bird is in line to make his Brisbane debut at centre when he recovers from a shoulder reconstruction.
The NSW Origin star has also been talked about as a possible lock, five-eighth or fullback for the Broncos.
But the fact Bird’s pre-season will be severely hampered by his comeback from shoulder surgery means he will likely come into the team in the familiar position of centre.
Coach Bennett needs a new centre following the departure of the vastly improved Tautau Moga to Newcastle and Bird shapes as the man most likely to fill that void.
Steve Renouf, one of Brisbane’s greatest ever centres with 142 tries in 183 games, said Bird could dominate on the edge.
“I don’t mind Jack Bird as a player,” he said.

“He could play anywhere in the backline but it will be great for him to play centre.
“He is tough and really does have a go. The lad can play.
“He is really competitive. He doesn’t go half-arsed. He is always 100 per cent.”
Bird, 22, is Brisbane’s star recruit for the 2018 NRL season, having signed a four-year deal with the Broncos to leave Cronulla.
His move has been hampered due to a delay surrounding his shoulder surgery which sparked a war of words between Bennett and the Sharks.
Bird is unlikely to be fit for the start of the NRL season but is only expected to miss about a month of action.
Shifting Bird into the unfamiliar position of lock with little training time alongside his new teammates could be a risk and Bennett is set on a halves combination of Kodi Nikorima and Anthony Milford.
Bird played mostly at centre and five-eighth during his three seasons at the Sharks, featuring at right centre in Cronulla’s historic 2016 premiership team.
Renouf said James Roberts should be shifted to the left side to accommodate Bird’s injection on the right.

“If Bird likes the right, hopefully they push Roberts to the left,” he said.
“He is good on the ball. He is a good footy player.
“He keeps it pretty simple and is solid and he can find the tryline.”
If Bird plays centre that would allow Josh McGuire to remain at lock.
McGuire was one of Brisbane’s best in the No. 13 jersey last season after replacing Corey Parker and was awarded the Ron McAuliffe Medal last week as Queensland’s best player in the State of Origin series.

Yeah, unfortunately we were never blessed with a Wolfman and had to settle for a bloke that was easily one of the best wingers in the game at like 21
As in the guy who scored on debut for club state and country? The guy who was named international rookie of the year in 2011. You mean that guy? I hate settling... it sucks.

I know it was a nasty injury but I just find it hard to believe he wasn’t able to continue playing. Not necessarily at the same level again but I really believed he’d come back.

To be honest he really went the extra distance to get back into the field and his injury was easily one of the most shocking in the modern era of the game, the fact he even managed to get back onto the field in some shape or form was an achievement in itself, anything above that would have been amazing. This bloke went through 10 operations and two years of rehab.

He tried. It was really painful wasn't it? The mental battle would be too much not being able to do what he used to do on the field.

Hang on a minute. I must have fallen asleep at the point in time where $3 million over 4 years was ruled to equal $1 million a season.

Very few backs in the present squad I wouldn't trade to have a fully fit Yow Yeh just even for a season. Mead and Pearson would be the first two gone.

The moment that injury happened i think we all knew it might be bad. But its only now, with what we have and have seen since that i realise just how much we lost. Think about it and watching those clips make his ability to bounce back professionally and still be the person he is all the more remarkable. In hindsight we missed out on a potential Bronco great, looking at those clips.
If the young players can look at those clips and realise how short their careers can be, perhaps they will try to make the most of it. Retirement's a long time.

No real quotes from the club about Bird. The pearl has said a few times he feels Roberts would be better on the left for us as well.

It is a bit of a risk to throw him in at lock before he has chance to play with other players here. I wouldn't discount him in the halves tbh to start with either if Kodi isnt on his game early on.

Mead fkn owned him through the jnrs and it wasnt even a competition, it was like a man whipping his son. It concluded in the Colts gf in 2007 where he tore him up for the final time basically winning the game himself by ghosting past YY a few times for some nice tries (if you dont believe me ask YY himself). Kevy Gordon even had a nibble on him here and there once YY came into grade. I guess that's the nature of the beast, YY goes into the Bronx setup with Locky and Hodges and Mead/Gordon get lumped with the Josh Grahams and Jordan Atkins (i know you wanna google those names, trust me u dont)

I have a hard time believing like some suggest that he was on the road to becoming the Best ever bronc winger.

Yes @Cult3 Wolfy was another good player like YY playing in a high performing system that was rocketed into the rep scene (never cheap shot the Wolfman)
