2018 NRL Side

Mead fkn owned him through the jnrs and it wasnt even a competition, it was like a man whipping his son. It concluded in the Colts gf in 2007 where he tore him up for the final time basically winning the game himself by ghosting past YY a few times for some nice tries (if you dont believe me ask YY himself). Kevy Gordon even had a nibble on him here and there once YY came into grade. I guess that's the nature of the beast, YY goes into the Bronx setup with Locky and Hodges and Mead/Gordon get lumped with the Josh Grahams and Jordan Atkins (i know you wanna google those names, trust me u dont)

I have a hard time believing like some suggest that he was on the road to becoming the Best ever bronc winger.

Yes @Cult3 Wolfy was another good player like YY playing in a high performing system that was rocketed into the rep scene (never cheap shot the Wolfman)

Meanwhile Yow Yeh comes into grade and goes on to play for Australia and QLD.

Mead comes into grade and turns into an average winger and now a reserve grader... It’s not like Mead never had any good players around him.

I’m sure a lot of players got owned in the juniors but we aren’t talking about the juniors here (Webcke was never good enough to make a rep team). We are talking about how they have performed coming into first grade and Yow Yeh was easily the better winger.

Spot on.

Shane Webcke has revealed he only got scouted by the Broncos because they were interested in signing Steve Price and was basically being chased by everyone and they happened to come across Webcke playing at the same carnival and he was far from the dominate player from his age group, instead they liked his attitude. Some players develop quick early, some develop later. Imagine if the Broncos gave up on Corey Parker because he wasn't setting the world on fire immediately, a great example of a player who got better in the later stages of his career.

David Mead was a good player, but at his height not even close to Jharal Yow Yeh and the scary thing is Yow Yeh had plenty of room to continue to improve. On the otherhand Mead is in decline, struggled to even push for a run on spot in first grade in 2017.

We will lose either TPJ or Oates next year as Corey is wanting to play in the backrow for good

I reckon we give Glenn the tap next year aswell and see if he can get a last contract on good coin somewhere else or we risk losing both tbf

I don't see Oates and TPJ competing for the same spot. TPJ is looking more like a middle forward, he's competing for a lock or prop spot.
Oates is prob competing with Glenn, Gillett, Su'a...

Glenn and Gillett are both starting to get on a bit, Gillett won't be going anywhere but as good as Glenn is, he might have to. Then again, going by the Roosters ways, we could just argue we have a couple of million spare for reasons.

I think glen played pretty good at the back end of the season, but he's like all our forwards, in being hesitent to play creatively for the risk it could iead to a change of possession, and with it a period of sustained pressure. The old days it would have been ok as either, because we could defend until teams greem impatient, or counterstrike with lethal backs.
Those things are there but stifled by a season littered with injuries, stilting the development of combinations end s below par kicking game.
I'm feeling this next season will be a lot better, on both those accounts though.

Firstly, we don't know whether Oates has what it takes to play in the backrow (a position in which we have the most depth)

Secondly, players should not be dictating where the play, right now we need Oates on the wing (the position we have the second least depth in). If players are not prepared to do what's best for the team, then they can **** off and become someone else's problem, and i don't care who the player is.

Thirdly, Glenn won't get the tap anytime soon, definitely not in 2018

Unless there is a winger absolutely banging down the door for an nrl spot then Oates will never move from the wing.

Let’s say Oates goes to second row and Mead has signed with super league club.

Broncos’ Corey Oates tells coach Wayne Bennett he wants to play in the forwards

COREY Oates is on a selection collision course with Wayne Bennett after telling the Broncos super coach his days as a winger are over.

Oates’ bid to make a risky conversion from the backs to the forwards suffered a blow on Wednesday when the hulking winger failed to finish a pre-season training session at Purtell Park.

On the comeback trail from off-season groin surgery, Oates felt a twinge as he attempted to change direction during a skills session. He was heard telling Broncos physios “I’m in a bit of pain” before limping out of Purtell Park with an ice pack strapped to his right groin.

Oates has had a wretched year with injury and illness – spending time in hospital in July with a staph infection – but insists he isn’t hitting the panic button over his latest groin concern.

“I tried to do a bit of skills but it didn’t go too great,” Oates said.

“I’ve been doing straight-line running for the past three weeks. I tried to do a bit more but the change of direction stuff pushed me a bit more.

“I felt a bit of a pull so I decided to stop after that. It’s not serious, there was a bit of pain there but I’ll ice it up and take it easy for the next few days.”

There could be more pain on the horizon for Oates, who faces a philosophical clash with Bennett over where he is best suited at the Broncos.

Graded as a back-rower, Oates was initially blooded in first grade on the wing to help his injury-ravaged body cope with the rigours of NRL football.

But after 97 games and four full seasons on the flanks, including four Origin games in the Queensland No. 2 jumper, Oates has had enough.

He has told Bennett he wants to play in the forwards in 2018.

There is just one problem – Bennett is not convinced Oates, who has had 10 operations at age 23, can handle the punishment an NRL back-rower must absorb.

“I’ve spoken to Wayne about playing in the forwards next year. I’m done as a winger,” Oates said.

“I’ve told Wayne that I have made my mind up and that I want to play in the back row.

“Wayne probably wants to keep me on the wing but he says he will give me a chance. It’s up to me to change his mind.

“It’s not that I hate playing on the wing, but I honestly don’t believe it’s my position.

“I’ve had more problems on the wing with injuries than I had in the (forwards) ... so why not move back?”

Oates said Broncos medicos have assured him his groin rehabilitation is on track.

“I had my tendon cut as part of the operation, so I’m probably compensating in other areas,” he said.

“I need to strengthen my groin. There’s some scar tissue there and the physios said it would be part of getting back to 100 per cent.

“It (groin) is a delicate area to get surgery on. It’s not a massive injury ... it’s more a pain in the butt to get right.”
