2018 NRL Side

Thats rubbish tbh. I think people get confused with lack of effort and a player just not being capable of doing some of the things they used to as they age. Sammy has always done his best for us. Sometimes, his best hasnt been good enough, especially last year but i wouldnt ever accuse him of not putting the effort in. He just isnt the same player he was in his prime.

Effort is something you put in on AND off the field. He has looked slow and overweight at times which I would put down to certain training habits or lack thereof. There is plenty of time post-career to tell bad jokes on the footy show.

He cant help losing any speed he has as he gets older, happens to everyone. I've seen him at training, and know some of the current players personally and cant say any of them have said he has bad habits or is unprofessional. He could probably benefit from losing a few kilos no question, but again, players bulk up the older they get sometimes. Not saying its a good thing, but it hardly make you unprofessional or lacking in effort. You dont play 29 times at Origin level and 32 for Australia if you dont do the little things right.

Just also wondering what lack of effort you are thinking he is putting in off the field as well. He trains well and sets good examples. He does some terrific work outside what goes on on the training field. Things like that and the time some of these blokes give that nobody is even aware of is fantastic.

Sam plays like it's a real effort now. Hard work. He probably should have retired at the end of this past season.

It's mainly last year I'm talking about, I think he had an awful 2017. It's also not exaggerating to say he could be guilty of coasting in the Henjak/Griffin years.Off the field as in looking after himself ie. obvious weight gains. I've never watched him at training so can't comment so I will take your word for it. Yes he made alot of rep teams throughout his career which is to be admired, but the qld side in particular was one that made no secret that it would show loyalty to the incumbents of a winning side, not to mention there's a few players who seem to "save themselves" for these games. I think he was well out of his depth in game 1 this year. As was just said I think '17 should have been his swansong, it would be really sad if he were to finish his career playing in the ISC.

Bennett dropped him to the bench in the early rounds of '15 for ill discipline and lack of effort if memory serves me?

I agree with your sentiment but feel this point is worth discussing. There was probably a little of coasting from Sam, but especially during Griffin’s tenure (which I’ll reference more because I kinda fell off during Henjak), his prime second-row years were wasted playing prop in some pretty poor or underperforming teams.

A guy like Sammy who isn’t the fittest bloke was always going to find it hard to come back after that

I will say that something that’s bothered me recently is how much he’s focused on his off-field life. Now in no way am I begrudging him getting his post-footy life set up, and obviously he has a young family and all that, but a guy who’s naturally as funny and charismatic as Sam doesn’t need to work that hard. Get off the radio and the telly and put your all into the team thus earning that extra contract or rep spots.

Because it can give off the impression, especially if you’re ‘not performing’, that you’ve given up and are just riding the gravy train until retirement

Webke must have been a freak. He never looked to be under done.

I don't reckon Thaiday will be that appealing in the media and will probably just fade away into obscurity. Probably won't sit well with him being the so called class clown. The guy just isn't that funny, at the moment he's only popular because he's a professional sports player who does and says silly things but that'll all change once he retires. No one will give a toss about his lame jokes

It's already been said he will be a starting prop next year...can't be doing to bad at training

No question his form has been down, i just dont buy he isnt trying. Sometimes you just decline and there isnt a great deal you can do about it, its just how things go. I dont think he was awful for us either tbh. He had some good games, he had some poor games. I dont think he had much in the middle, he was good, or he was bad.

Looking at some of the off season recruiting done by other teams and there’s some serious squads on paper next year. Our big name players who are chewing up the most money really really need to earn their keep this year. Particularly when you consider guys like milf, Boyd and bird are our top paid players and compare that with other squads top name players such as Cronk, smith, Thurston and even Moloney I’d say based off last years form we are quiet a way off the eight ball if our guys don’t go up a level.

One area I think we are comfortable in is our “mid range” guys such as alex Glenn and Jordan Kahu who turn up week in week out and just do there job. If you compare those types of players with similar types from other squads I think they are pretty on par. It’s really our “star” players who will determine how successful we are this year.

Oh I agree he isn’t really funny, I mean he has a quality joke every so often, I was referring more to his general appeal to the masses who worship him. For instance he still gets the biggest cheer at the ground when the team gets announced over the PA

You've just described why he's perfect for chanel 9
