Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold introduces ‘trainer of the week’ award
Broncos coach Anthony Seibold has found a new way to motivate his squad, introducing a “trainer of the week” award, with Brisbane’s young guns already dominating.
Last week monster forward Payne Haas was spotted at Red Hill training in the club’s playing jersey and this week halves Sean O’Sullivan and Cory Paix followed suit.
While the rest of the squad wear their regular training gear, Seibold’s “trainer of the week” gets to stand out in the coveted jersey.
New recruit Shaun Fensom applauded the initiative as another incentive for the next generation of Haas, O’Sullivan and Paix to wear the jersey every week in first grade.

“They’re our trainers of the week so they put in the most through the week,” Fensom said.
“Their numbers are the highest out of the whole team and their repeat efforts are up and above everyone else.
“They get to train in the Broncos jersey for that week because they earned it.
“It’s competition for everyone else in the side. You want to be wearing that jersey at training because that means you’ve put in the hard work and earned it.
“Competition is healthy for the side. The more competition we’ve got, the better we’re going to be.”

It is not surprising Haas was one of the first to wear the jersey given the fitness he has shown in his return from shoulder surgery, including coming second in a time trial last November.
O’Sullivan and Paix’s acknowledgment this week is also a promising sign for Brisbane’s playmaking future and is keeping current halfback Kodi Nikorima on his toes.
The Kiwi international said it made him want to be the next one wearing the playing jersey at training.

“To be one out of 30 or 40 odd players, it’s a good achievement,” Nikorima said.
“If you train hard, you reap the rewards. I haven’t worn the jersey yet but hopefully before the pre-season ends you’ll see me out there in the jersey.
“I’ve known Sean for a couple of years now. He’s actually good friends with my brother Jayden. It’s good to have him around. He’s like a little brother to myself as well.
“He’s a quality, quality player and there’s no doubt we’ll see him in a Broncos jersey this year.”
