2020 Round 1 Line up

1. Jack Bird
2. Corey Oates
3. Darius Boyd
4. Kotoni Staggs
5. Jamayne Isaako
6. Anthony Milford
7. Brodie Croft
8. Matthew Lodge
9. Andrew McCullough
10. Payne Haas
11. Alex Glenn
12. David Fifita
13. Tevita Pangai Junior

14. Jake Turpin
15. Joe Ofahengaue
16. Thomas Flegler
17. Patrick Carrigan

That's what I think the Round 1 side will be now that Gillett has retired.

You also hoping Siebold gets sacked? That is a great way to go about it AND getting 99% of fans even further offside.

Wonder who else will come into top 30 and development squad. Bullemore, Riki.

Gillett's obviously retiring so that's one fairly hefty piece of the puzzle now resolved.

Pack for next year is starting to take shape:

8. Lodge
9. Turpin
10. Haas
11. Glenn
12. Fifita
13. TPJ

14. Utility
15. Ofahengaue
16. Carrigan
17. Flegler

I think the only spots really left to resolve are whether TPJ is an edge or middle Forward.

His attack on an edge is really damaging, but his defence is obviously very poor.

I'm just wondering whether it would be practical to play him on an edge in attack and let him defend in the middle, interchanging with Alex Glenn? Is this something a team can accomodate mid game between sets of six or is it just too much chopping and changing and too difficult to execute?

I do think it's important that he starts for us one way or another. So many times we've been on the back foot early and never recovered and TPJ being the type of player he is can definitely get us on the front foot early like he did against Taumalolo if we can just work out how to use him most effectively.

We got lots of young outside backs in waiting, and potentially one or two signings coming in... but at this stage I’d go with this for round 1

I think your pack and bench are spot on.

Honestly, I don't see Bird at Fullback as realistic so I'm expecting him to go to Centre, Isaako to go to Fullback and Darius to go to the Wing.

Everyone would be in positions they know and have played plenty of before successfully.

“in no particular order of importance”, but let’s be honest, you nailed the 30th spot!

I'm thinking TPJ to replace Gillo. Don't rate him at lock like I do in the back row.

It's a tough call isn't it, the only two options are -

11. Fifita
12. TPJ

or

11. Glenn
12. Fifita

I think I prefer option 1, with Glenn playing the bench utility / injury cover role. Carrigan should be starting at Lock.

TPJ surely is the Gillo Replacement after what we saw last season, he has such a size advantage over the other teams on the edge he can easily bulldoze his way through and get those elite offloads out.

The one thing our team needs more then anything is attack and he is one of the most creative Forwards in the game for Attack, might need to lose a little weight just to be a bit more mobile though, he is one of the biggest players in the comp as it is.

I actually see a lot of Gillett in Bullemor even though he generally plays middle forward. Could be a bolter if we give him a go there. He has good speed and is a smart player.

Can he not attack in one position and defend in another? (Genuine question, feel free to explain why/why not)

He can, it's just a pain in the ass. You really want to have the same guys inside you and outside you in attack and defense to get to know their tendencies etc, on both sides of the field, I don't know for sure, but I feel like being in sync with the guys next to you on the field goes a long way to being good.

Hmmm. that creates a major problem for us then. TPJ is so good in attack on an edge but honestly, he isn't really close to good enough at this level in defence, and it's not like the guys outside him can compensate for that. He's going to get skinned out there too often to really be comfortable with. So he basically has an offseason to learn to defend on an edge competently or he's resigned to being played in the middle it sounds like.

To be fair, he's been a middle Forward for so long, maybe a preseason working on his defence on an edge is what he really needs to improve.

Maybe he could, but like @Unbreakable said, I think it helps if you know the blokes games inside and outside of you.
