Well we get to see behind the curtain for a social few issues thanks to Qatar. The ability to see the true character of some 'current things'
1) Rainbows.... Seems like they are indeed corporate virtue signalling tools and kicked to the kerb very quickly when dollars are at stake. The English team were threatening to display a rainbow or two so FIFA stepped in and vetoed that quick smart, which is actually ironic when you think about it as it's kind of the exact place you would need to be doing that signalling for it to mean anything important.
2) Take the knee. What the hey? The English team taking a knee to support Iran? I mean.. wonderful but what on earth does that symbol even mean any more apart from supporting the 'current thing'!?
Now the English team, they just get to feel good with their signalling.. The Iranian team, that is powerful what they did.. real risk being taken there. All for separating sport and politics.. but that seem idealistic and I watch with interest how events unfold in Qatar.
