FOOTBALL 2022 FIFA World Cup

JAPAN HOLD ON!

That was a shock. After that first half, you wouldn't think Japan would be winning it. Germany were dominating the match and controlling the game well. They were picking Japan apart and should have had more goals.

The change of tactics from Japan for that second half paid off for them. They went forward and pressed high, forcing errors and they scored two goals a result.

Very enjoyable game.

Spain score first against Costa Rica but I think he was offside.

Actually looking at the replay, I think it's fine.

Spain score again.

They're all over Costa Rica.

Not even 35 minutes in and Spain are already up 3-0 after scoring from a penalty.

This is going to be a long night for Costa Rica.

Germany will be in a tricky spot now.

With Spain winning this one, they're facing not advancing beyond the group stage for the second WC in a row which they have never done in their history.

Japan play Costa Rica next and then Germany play Spain. If Japan beat Costa Rica which is very likely, that Spain game becomes a must win. If they draw with Spain, then they will need to rely on Japan beating Spain to even be a chance.

When you consider that in the four WC's prior to 2018 they never finished below third and in 2014 they were champions, then to not advance beyond the group stage in consecutive WC's.. That would be very embarrassing for them.

Especially when you look at their history. Prior to this WC, they had compete in 19 WC's and have only finished below third in 6 of them.

Torres makes it 4-0 for Spain.

Canada made a good account of themselves against Belgium.

They were unlucky to not come away with a draw at the very least, unfortunately they couldn't convert their chances into points but when you look at where Canada were before Herdman took over, they can be proud of that performance. This is their first WC since 1986.

I wouldn't be surprised if they caused an upset or two in this group.

Thierry Henry is part of the Belgium coaching staff and he was at the tunnel congratulating all of the Canada players.

Cameroon just haven't been as enjoyable to watch since Samuel Eto'o retired.

Uruguay vs Korea Republic next up.

Uruguay would be the favourites on paper, but this has been a funny World Cup at times so I think this one could go either way.

Korea Republic did beat Germany in 2018 so they can have an upset in them.

It's an absolute shame that Erling Haaland plays for Norway.

We don't get to see one of the most freakish players in the world on the football's biggest stage.

This is a very high tempo game so far.

Korea looking pretty decent at the moment.

Decent effort by Valverde.

**** if Suarez didn't miss that ball, no way in hell was the GK stopping it..

Uruguay should have taken the lead there.

Pass way too hard Olivera.

That was a pretty good chance there.

Damn, Hwang so close!

Golden opportunity missed. Just sailed over the crossbar.

**** so close Godin!

His header from the corner hitting the post and deflecting away.

Very enjoyable first half.

The fact that there was only 1 minute of added time speaks to how fast paced it was. Very surprising both sides are going into the break goalless.
