2024 NRL Player Movements & Rumours

I think the question is probably whether his talent is equivalent to a rep player but circumstances has meant he's missed out.

Same could be said about Matty Bowen who came through when Lockyer, Billy and Khunt had a mortgage on fullback for QLD, but he was still a rep level player.
That's a fair comparison, I'd just add that when it comes to representative football, Matt Bowen is best remembered as a bench utility. I think that's an important distinction and for mine that's a step below representative superstar.

As it stands, Papenhuyzen hasn't even reached those heights and his injury history ought to factor in his value.

Matt Tripp likes this comment as he hides second book.

If this is the best roster he can organise, he's done a pretty ordinary job.

How much is Edwards on again?

Soooooo the market value (set by the bulldogs) means nothing to the NRL when Melbourne are involved. Classic.

Just allot unlimited Bluebet shares and paid Bella Tripp Foundation appearances and the boys will stay on for unders!

I'm pretty sure it was actually set by Melbourne which makes things worse.

He's reportedly on $1.1 million and he's re-signed for $800K.

When you take that piece of context out of it, I can see $800,000 for Papenhuyzen but with that in mind it obviously fails the pub test.

To answer my earlier question - Edwards re-signed for $3.4 million for four years in 2023. So roughly $850K p.a. which is a fair deal. Clubs ought to be rewarded for actually developing players, so I've got no qualms with Edwards, Papenhuyzen etc. signing for less. The

Has to remain at arm's length... so paid appearances would be under the cap.

He also cant be gifted bluebet shares, but he can purchase them himself.

I think that is where the scrutiny needs to come, because he can't purchase them outside of what the normal offerings would be to the general public.

It's similar to real estate... didnt Prince get caught up because he was being offered prices at heavily discounted prices at the titans or something like that??

Wasn't there a story not that long ago that Storm wouldn't pay Paps more/close to what they were paying Grant/Munster/Hughes? (I can't remember which).

All 3 of those from memory are 1m plus, surely Paps wasn't on that also for 24.

Maybe I've got the players mixed up, definitely read or heard that story somewhere about Storm though and not paying close to the new big 3.

If you take injuries out of the equation, at best, he would have been a bench utility.

Trbojevic and Tedesco clear him pretty comfortably and now he's got Edwards to contend with.
There was definitely a time when he was in the conversation above them, then he got another injury before Origin.

If we are talking about now that's completely different.

2020 was his best opportunity and that was off a premiership. However he was ruled out due to a calf injury, while Tedesco was also racing the clock and Turbo had been ruled out after a bad year with injury.

If we play the 'fully fit' game, he's not displacing Turbo. I think he would have struggled to best Teddy.

let's be real though, if you get picked and do well you go ahead in the pecking order, but it's all what ifs at this point.

Sure, but when is he getting picked? The only reason he was discussed as an option was because of injuries to other players, so when you take them out of the equation he's still behind a few other players. Which is why at best I could see him as an interchange player in a similar role as Hynes and Gutherson and who's to say he would have done any better in that role?

Isn't he a Clive Churchill winner? That has to account for something.

2020 was the year I was thinking of, incumbents are always going to have the advantage until they get their shot and perform though, like Munster was given his chance at 6 the exact same way.

Origin has often been the catalyst for a player to establish themselves as a top player.

It's understood the Bulldogs were willing to pay over $1 million per season for Papenhuyzen - up to $300,000 more per year than Melbourne - but that the fullback ultimately decided to remain in Melbourne.

Nothing suss here when it comes to the Storm as always your honour.

300k more yet he's happy to sign a 1 year extension.

Assuming dogs were willing to go 3yr or more... how much money is he seemingly happy to give up.

Given it's only a 12 month extension it would suggest storm dont see him in their long term plans especially with Sua coming through.

Dogs should throw a deal at Sua... he should be allowed to negotiate given Paps has signed an extension

Your 300 K is more like 120 K after tax and management fees .
Then that 120 K will get chewed up in real estate agent fees just selling and buying another house .
If you were happy staying in Melbourne and you and your family were not keen on Sydney its a pretty simple decision . So yeah nothing suss .

The difference is that the position was wide open when Munster was selected. JT had just played his final ever rep. game and after Milford failed his audition, Morgan had slotted into the centres so Munster had a free passage to come into the 6.

Meanwhile Tedesco was on his way to becoming the NSW Captain and Trbojevic was about to produce one of the all-time great seasons of any fullback in history.
