I might have read that wrong.

He's on 800K now over 5 yrs = 4mil.

Still ......he goes from 250K per season to 800K the next season?
Thats cooked.

How did they shake hands if he's away on holiday?

Sherlock Holmes Halloween GIF by PeacockTV
No one said he went away, only that the players aren't at work.

Just think if we didn't have Walsh, we could have had Drinkwater instead as we were trying to recruit him before Walsh became available.

I would take Walsh any day of the week and I would still take him.

And if he gets back to 2023 Mam quickly, you’d easily pay $800k. He had a bad year, move on.

Here is my view of the squad over next few years

Leaving now

Oates- Need to replace with squad player

Pereira- Need to replace with squad player

Sailor- Replace with player as Walsh backup. Maybe we have with the Latrell clickbait guy.

Karapani- Replace with outside back squad player (Presuming he goes to the Dogs)

Contracted until at least 2026

Arthars- Keep

Carrigan- Keep

Haas- Keep

Mam- Keep

Piakura- Keep but reassess end of 2025. Need some better SR backup to keep him on his toes.

Black- Will need to upgrade after 2026

Riki- Keep for now but reassess end of 2025. Need some better SR backup to keep him on his toes.

Walsh- Keep

Te Kura- Keep

Mariner- Keep

Walters- I think keep based on dollars and ability to cover halves and hooker. 2023 Billy is a keeper... I think there will be less minutes to Mozer over time and eventually a bench hooker and half back coverage role. Alternatively, you play a different hooker or Hetherington as bench lock/hooker. For the dollars he is on not sure there is much advantage moving him on unless he wants to go.

Madden- Not the worst if we keep him as backup halfback. Only 24 may keep developing into a better half into his late 20s like some other halves have done. Also, not a problem if we move him on now but the contract means it is probably unlikely.

Rogers (Development)- Similar to Madden. Not bad backup and if on a low enough deal is a handy squad player but nothing more than a fill in from time to time.
Somehow we need to turn Black, Walters, Paix, Mozer, Smoothy, Rogers and Madden into 5 and replace with backrowers. Black and Mozer are the long term must keeps.

Retiring after 25 (About $900K in cap)

Taupau

Jensen

Reynolds

Off contract at end of 2025 but should Keep

Mozer- Will need to sign and upgrade but not on elite money yet. Like the previous mutual option that Melbourne did with Grant while he was developing and would look to replicate.

Leota- I like his potential but not there yet. Hopefully keeps developing in QLD Cup at low contract. I think worth hanging onto given his young age.

Willison- Keep and will need an upgrade that will coincide with Taupau and Jensen going

Hoeter- Probably his last year and provides good backup if he stays

Maybe keep beyond 2025 or can’t afford to keep

Cobbo- Keep him on current deal no more. Might be him or Staggs

Staggs- Keep him on current deal no more. Might be him or Cobbo

Hetherington- Depends if he is willing to stay and whether Maguire wants to keep him. I think he will move on. I like the idea of a 9/13 bench player just not sure its him. We also have so many other hookers to sort out.

Not must keep beyond 2025

Paix- On too much money to not play. Either he comes into first grade as starting hooker based on Maguires decision, or we move him on… if we can.

Smoothy- Once again depends what Maguire has planned. Happy to move him on if not in a regular first grade role.

Baker- Could yet come good. Wait and see this season unless he wants to go now and don't stand in his way.

Gosiewski- Okay backup for little money.

Hunt- Move him on. Apparently on $200K which isn’t much but hasn’t offered much either.

Maybe Paix knew that Kevvie wouldn't last at the club and all he had to do was dig his heels in.

I never did understand his dropping. Was Smoothy performing better than him? I don't think so. I think they were about the same, to be honest. Neither of them were anything special. Kev's wording around his dropping was confusing, as well.

I think there is still a future for him at the club.

I look forward to seeing what Madge can do with Hetherington. I think there is a good player in there, but I don't think Kevvie knew how to bring that out. I think his future is in the second row.

on top of this, how hard to Kev push to get Billy re-signed? His form was horrible at the time…speculation here but I’m not entirely sure Kev is as friendly as he projects himself? My point being, it just felt like he didn’t want anyone on the bench that would make Billy look pedestrian. Smoothy was a less risk taking version of Billy and was never going to force him to the bench. However Mozer and paix have higher ceiling’s and could potentially have in a short time just from public pressure. I get holding Mozer back but paix isn’t a rookie.

Sorry for the long winded version of agreeing with you that something stinks.

I think you are right there with making Kobe a second rower... he runs a great line and also cuts blokes in half so could be an intimidator on the edge to protect the halves.

One thing Madge did in origin was work quick ptbs down the edges and then utilised his backrowers on the short sides in yardage and just work over the centres and halves.

Kobe's game is set up for running off the back of quick ptb's and getting behind the ruck... and he'll be running at smaller bodies out on an edge as well.

He needs to increase his game and being an edge that can play middle would be perfect for our 17 jersey.

Bring able to accommodate him in the 17 also allows us to rotate Taupau and Te Kura in different games through the middle with Willison which gives us a good sized bench with more versatility.

As an undersized middle only, it’s really hard to see a future for him with us, he needs more strings to his bow.

Only thing that concerns me is if he has enough lateral movement to play 2nd row.

I'm actually pretty interested to see what happens with Oates tbh. Given what he's said about Paix and Hetherington that is. I think we likely still let him go but I just don't know why you would when he just wants minimum wage.
If he re-signs Oates his available Top 30 spots shrinks further.

I'd say he would need to be able to release someone before deciding to re-sign Oates... unless he thinks he can turn him into a second rower.
