2026 NRL Player Movements & Rumours

Do player agents get their commission tax free to for any clients they have playing for the PNG Chiefs?

If they don't I have a sneaky suspicion they will increase their commission for those players to make it the equivalent of what they would get if it was tax free.

Thats an interesting point. I doubt they would as the agents will still be Australian based.

I heard this brought up the other day on the radio and the reply was no, which makes sense. I can definitely see managers bumping their commission though.

The player agents arent living in PNG so I doubt it.

There's probably nothing stopping PNG paying a finder's fee or something to agents that bring players to them though.

I'd imagine that is salary cap rorting to some extent, but Uncle Nick would surely be out there providing kickbacks to agents, media, etc. to stay on his good side

People praising Luai for not requesting a release like Galvin and will stay at the Tigers for the remainder of his contract.

That's probably because the ****ing PNG side doesn't come in until the 2028.....

Luai leaving not only gives the Tigers $$$'s to spend it removes a perceived road block for any up and coming talent in the lower grades. You'd hate to lose a promising half because they can't see a clear path to FG.

Madden will be a good replacement for Luai. I don't think he is a halfback, but he has shown he can be a quality 6

If you really want to list some examples of five eighths and their tiers that would be helpful...
OK freestyling here but I'd roughly say: (lets just use 1-4 for the ease of it)

1
Munster
Ezra

2
Luai
C walker
Burton (in between 2 and 3 IMO)

3
Sharpe
Trindall
Brooks

4
Ilias
Atkinson

As a reference you get the idea, I assume you disagree about Burton.
Never the less, my point is that Luai is up there with the 'current' 6s going around... we aren't in a blessed era of Lockyers/Fittlers/Daleys etc.

I'm not a big fan of Luai, I'm just calling it objectively for what it is.

Sexton is good no frills player that is very likeable does his job and is a hell of a lot cheaper.
He might not attract as much attention or certain other players... but he won't drive others away though.

Furthermore, this is where I'm really on the other side of the coin.
Not sure if you place much emphasis on the 'business' side of rugby league.

But if you are a CEO of a club, you will get MUCH more praise for signing Luai than Sexton.
(and really, its what we are actually seeing in reality)
Luai has basically paid for himself.

Think like Beckham signing for MLS, JS Park signing for MAN U back in the day (literally every Korean was suddenly a MAN U fan)

Just my 2 cents, I just thought the whole "he's over-rated , he's a grub" sorta vibes is not thinking big picture.

And I personally disagree about his impact at Penrith, I think you downplay it a bit, He wasn't the main man of course, but he played a massive 'Robin' role, esp with the connection between bizza/critta and co. No one really went on a free ride at the panthers IMO, as much as I hate them, you don't win 4 titles in a row in today's game by having freeloaders. No team has come close to even winning 3 I believe.
GF LOSS, WIN WIN WIN WIN, PRELIM LOSS
As much as I hate to admit it, I gotta tip my hat off to it.

Purely from PNG's POV, I think its a massive signing.

and look, he might go there and TANK, and play really crap, miss home and the whole thing may end in tears... who knows?

all part of the Rugba Leeg soap opera

I do agree pretty much agree with that list but I would have Luai at level 3.
Brooks definitely 4...

I get where your coming from on the business side of things..

I still believe there are better choices then Luai..but there are worse choices too.

I hope Cleary goes to Perth.
That will make it interesting..

I do believe they all played a roll in their 4 in row run...
Some roles were smaller and less important though.

Possibly being kissed on the dick by the referees may have aided them too and their special completely legal supplements.

I would be interested to hear from PNG fans and locals what their point of view is.

This is just my opinion though..
If Luai make PNG Chiefs a success I will glad admit I was wrong.

The Australian Government will be changing the tax laws in this months Federal budget to ensure income earned by players and staff at the PNG team was not taxable in Australia.

Minister for Pacific Island Affairs Pat Conroy said.

“This change ensures the tax exemptions provided by Papua New Guinea operate as intended,”

“The new team is a symbol of the bond between our two nations, including our shared commitment to a secure and prosperous region, and it will deliver economic benefits to both countries.”

Holy ****... how ****ing shit is the LNP that Labor are happy to come out and and just exempt footy players from being taxxed.

A selection of 30 guys who are extremely well paid will not be required to pay tax in Australia now... I'm sure this will land well in the AFL states... and basically every ****ing state lol

Is anyone else in the country exempt from being taxxed?... like officially by law?? we know billionaire ***** are likely paying **** all

This would be part of the deal the Aus gov struck with the NRL. The Chiefs are partially a diplomatic exercise, “soft” diplomatic power to keep PNG onside.

I think it's because they are living in PNG and are being paid in PNG by a team that is based in PNG. I assume they would be required to pay tax over there (just as I also assume the PNG government will make them exempt from paying tax anyway).

PNG came out with the tax free after they were confirmed I believe (I don't think it was a thing whilst it was still in contention) and that was months ago at this point... maybe over a year 🤔🤔... I think this is the first time the Aus government has come out and said they won't tax them.

Aus gov agreed on the 60 million over 10yr or whatever, but now they've also added to that by not taxing Aus citizens even if they should be paying tax.

What's this shit the 2 May brothers did? I read the fox article and still dont understand as the video they had was them saying they were going to PNG.

Was it a prank? What a dead prank if so

The article is paywalled, but it the title says they're changing tax law

PNG have their own tax laws and are basically excluding NRL players from having to pay it (so that part of your comment has been known for awhile), but I'm assuming this is the first official time the Aus Fed Govt / ATO is basically saying they are ignoring the resident components where if someone claiming to live overseas spends too much time in Australia, then some part of their income is subject to Aust tax laws.
