Q-CUP 2026 Queensland Cup Discussion

Great try from Coates tonight in the Bears loss, four on four blind side, no numbers advantage and no room. Great pass from Hamilton and he gets it done from the cut-out pass.

McConnell moved to the bench and played hooker when he came on.

I don't disagree that alignment is important and I am not against it at all but I want to know why if it works Redcliffe can't make finals? Why the Young Guns win one comp? How did the Storm make 11 Grand FInals in 20 years using affiliate clubs if it doesn't work?

The Storm have switched this year to a Cup reserve grade and they are coming near last in both.

Redcliffe are new, they haven't got a core of 'Cliffe players who have come through the grades together yet, but it should come.

I'm not familiar with the Young Guns.

Storm = cheats, so there's that. Affiliates physically removed from the NRL club by multiple states (ie Falcons) may not be the best model to achieve alignment. And whoever's deal with the devil they had, has clearly expired this year so there's also that.

You're far more across this stuff than I am, I really have no idea. There's obviously pros and cons or it would have been done by now, but I'm glad the conversation is open tbh. If it's the right thing to do, then let's do it. If it's not, then carry on.

I wonder if he might get a debut in first grade next year because we might not have anyone else left.

Young Guns were the Cowboys reserve grade in the Cup last time they had this thought bubble. Cowboys didn't win at all and Young Guns won once in 2005.

That's another concern, this is what they want at the moment because Penrith are making a success of it. In three years what will be next?

If the QRL do this they should be locked into six teams each and no more changing.

I agree, if things change it needs to be with a long-term view to improving both the NRL clubs and the QCup comp in general so it needs to be done properly. Hopefully with Ikin in the hot seat any changes are well thought out and implemented.

Aublix with a double just running hard and straight near the posts.

Wynnum v Townsville Meninga GF next week.

Wynnum haven't made a final since 2019 and Blackhawks haven't made a final since their three loses in a row 21, 22, and 23.

Lateo outstanding today, Cowboys have a future six there. Townsville defence is outstanding. Wynnum's spine is 10/10.

Gifford, Walker, Lateo- great halves battle.

Player who has been catching my eye the last few weeks since moving to centre is Kane Bradley. He's a big body who has that lean into them Oates type run where unless they are able to get under him, he will often find his front which leads to a quick play the ball setting a great platform for Coates to take a confident hitup. Defence he has been pretty solid as well, Jett, Kane and Phillip have that right edge on lockdown, where no team have been able score on their edge for the last month since Kane's position change.

Also quick shoutout to the debutant Tyler Laubscher, never heard of him but looks to be a NZ Rubgy convert. He had some great tackle breaks and defended well, one to look out for.

Bradley has filled the role I thought Delouise would for Coates, that experienced older player that gives him space and a constant stream of communication.

Laubscher has been playing front row for Bears A grade.

Coates best Cup game in six games. Really smart try down a short side, 144m when Bears only had 46% of the ball, made two of their six-line breaks.

Bears weren't great but Coates was good.

Ben Ikin quits as QRL CEO. Interesting, wonder what opportunity or friction has come his way to make that decision.

He never really seemed onboard with the NRL teams joining the competition so maybe this is him losing out on that and not wanting to be involved in the direction they are heading in? I'm not sure.

He doesn’t have a history of sticking around long in any job. He would be perfect for replacing sharp at Perth & is a bears old boy, but doubt he moves to Perth.

He wouldn't necessarily have to. He could be based in Sydney to help recruit players and to have a close connection with the North Sydney old boys.
