Glad they're showing lots of games from 2000 - 2011.

Disappointing the 06 Prelim didn't make it. In fact, only one game showed during 2006?

Yeah I find that disappointing as I do the absence of the 1993 grand final qualifier, the 2 hardest finals games the Broncos have had to work for to qualify to the grand final, showed a lot of heart and passion to win them.

Got my hands on a copy today at JB-HIFI in Queen Street. Could've been better but it's still a good collection of highlights.

Parents are going to Parramtta to see the game, said they'll have a look for it. If not, Mother will just order it online.

I'll throw in the 1990 match(lol no not the dreadful display in the finals) against the Raiders in which both teams put on a great display of attacking football and the Broncos win after Paul Hauff makes a great break to score a try in the dying seconds.

I'm basically making this the 'old Broncos match thread'.

Was waiting to 'acquire' some new television shows so decided to pop on a GF since it's been ages since I've seen us win anything of note. Decided to go with 1997 GF since it was featured in Big League last week and truth be told I'd never watched it in full before. Couple of notes...

- One of the most noticeable attributes about the game is the SL exclusive rules. '0' tackle and the scorers kicking off was a little tough to wrap my head around after spending so many years watching it the other way round. Retroactively it's funny watching the commentators explain rules that are now commonplace in the modern game. Sterlo had to explain in depth why the first try may have been controversial as it was only in Super League you weren't allowed to tackle a player in the air. I didn't know that was an exclusive rule...but in hindsight it's a pretty damn good one.

- The Broncos team sheet lied. Always thought Gee played at hooker etc. but really there were a bunch of changes including...

4. Darren Smith
6. Anthony Mundine
9. Kevin Walters
13. Andrew Gee

Choc gets a bad wrap IMO. My perception was that he was a total passenger out there. He may have been during the season but in the GF I thought he was one of our best on field. Created plenty of opportunities and came up with some good options. I think Mundine's public persona and Walters' forced move is what causes a lot of angst looking back.

- Game itself was a dogs breakfast. Cronulla made too many mistakes and didn't have enough class out-wide to threaten the Broncos. Meanwhile, Brisbane never really got into any kind of rhythmn and despite being comfortably a class above it took them around 60 minutes to really put Cronulla away.

- To me the game is about two unsung heroes at the club - Peter Ryan and John Plath. Plathy was such a stirrer and it was a crack up listening to him claiming innocence off the field. Fans like to bag out Ennis but honestly he was just a more polished version of Johnny. Meanwhile, Ryan deserves to be right up there with TC & Gilly as the best one on one defenders at the club. The shot he put on Peachey won the game for us, no doubt about it.

Are there any memories you guys have of this game?

i was there, it was awesome lol.

Super League was fantastic and i wish the NSWRL (im sorry, "A"RL) died and Super League took over as the main competition to be perfectly honest. much better rules, much faster game. i loved zero tackle at the start of every set. defusing a bomb 1m out from your line and getting tackled straight away shouldnt count as a tackle.

back then i thought mundine was great because he ran his mouth a lot, but he actually backed it up. he was a great player, and anyone saying otherwise is deluded.

anyone who has Foxtel IQ, go and record any of the Classic Matches throughout the week. Sometimes its an old Broncos match. I've seen:

Broncos vs Norths from 92
Broncos vs Manly from 89
Broncos vs Roosters from 99
Broncos vs Parramatta from 96

I was only 2 years old in 1997 but i've got the Super League grand final on DVD and watch it occasionaly.

The game is basically dominated by the Broncos as Cronulla produce a pretty sloppy performance making to many mistakes which makes them have difficulty in getting out of their own half. Brisbane's poor handling keeps the game tight as we go into halftime ahead 10-2 with the only try coming off a bomb that was fumbled by Matty Rogers and picked up by the Pearl who dived over.

Cronulla get a sniff just after halftime as a pass from Sailor goes to ground and is dived on by Russell Richardson and the score is 10-8 and Cronulla gain some momentuem but after a huge hit on Peachey by Peter Ryan the ball goes to the left and Renouf goes over and Lockyer converts to put the margin back out to 8 and the Broncos go on with the job controlling the rest of the game and finish with a comfortable 26-8 win with the Pearl bagging a hatrick and Hancock icing it.

Classic commetary from Sterlo as Lockyer sets Renouf up for his 3rd try: "He is going to be a superstar this kid Darren Lockyer"

Brisbane Broncos 26: 3 tries by Steve Renouf and a try by Michael Hancock, 5 goals by Darren Lockyer
Cronulla Sharks 8: Try by Russell Richardson and 2 goals by Matt Rogers

thanks for the commentary of a 16 year old game we all saw.....
