Came across this article on fox sports when I was looking at the stats from tonight. Interesting read

Such a shame how players that get injured never get the support they need or payouts from their injuries which if they were injured elsewhere would get covered. At least he is working and doing something with his life.

It's stories like this, why Men of League started.

It's disgraceful that clubs don't help these guys out. They sacrifice everything for the sport and just get dumped on the scrap heap. Remember Tuiaki? Same thing, the sport ruined his body but he got absolutely nothing when he had to retire. Those clubs are just symptomatic of the NRL in general, absolutely zero responsibility taken and zero professionalism. I'm surprised my players don't sue clubs and the NRL, to make them give the support these guys need and don't get.

On the other side of the coin, you have the Broncs and Yow Yeh.

Typical Panthers and Gus Gould. Just moves on to the next guy. Its an absolute disgrace they haven't helped him out with the surgery

If I were Docker, I would be looking at taking them to court.

Not to be the bad guy.... but if you play this sport and you don't have medical insurance.... Something about heads and rocks.

This is what the clubs should be doing. The onus is on them here

Similar situation to Nathan Bracken

Former fast bowler Nathan Bracken settles case against Cricket Australia

In March this year Bracken told Fairfax Media he approached Cricket Australia in 2010 about insurance arrangements to underwrite his treatment. "I didn't question it. I just expected it," he recalled."That's how it is, right? If you get hurt doing something at work, it's all good because there is a system in place to assist you. But there wasn't even as much as a discussion. I pretty much got laughed out of the room."

Yep. When you're employed, doing a job under instruction, it's the businesses insurance that covers you. These aren't subbies.

That's exactly right. It should be a workers compensation issue and at the very least, the panthers responsibility to the player. The fact that they have just said he was off contract so its not my problem is absolutely pathetic and I hope someone confront Gould over this. He is pretty quick to be judgemental on other issues and point fingers

No it's not. Just like it's not on me to pay for my staff to have medical insurance. If you don't have it put in your contract, then you need to organise it yourself. It's easy to blame the big mean club who has all the money, but he didn't have insurance, and that's 100% on him.

This isn't for a heart attack or a breast augmentation - it's injuries and wear accrued through their employment.

Are the players technically contractors? That would complicate things re: insurance.

They're under an EBA aren't they? So I guess, talk to you union rep or a lawyer. I would assume he's already done that. Which would indicate, that he needed insurance, and he didn't have it.

Nashy is right.
It's called Trauma insurance or alternatively you could get Income Protection, and your employer doesn't pay for it. You get it for yourself. Like every other grown up. The club might have to pay some kind of workers compensation, but it's up to the insurer how much he would have been paid out.

These footballers should really go and get themselves a financial adviser, don't just rely on their managers to do everything.

You'd have to imagine the premiums would be astronomical for an NRL player to get injury insurance. I'm surprised the NRL or RLPA doesn't have some kind of fund set up where a percentage of everyone's salary goes in to cover it.

If he doesn't want anyones' sympathy why is he doing the story? Don't get me wrong I feel sorry for the bloke, it must suck to have arthiritis at such a young age.
