Nashy is right.
It's called Trauma insurance or alternatively you could get Income Protection, and your employer doesn't pay for it. You get it for yourself. Like every other grown up. The club might have to pay some kind of workers compensation, but it's up to the insurer how much he would have been paid out.

These footballers should really go and get themselves a financial adviser, don't just rely on their managers to do everything.

You **** your back up doing your job, you get workers comp. Trauma / Income Protection insurance is for events outside of work. He didn't **** his knee up riding a skateboard.

No it's not. Just like it's not on me to pay for my staff to have medical insurance. If you don't have it put in your contract, then you need to organise it yourself. It's easy to blame the big mean club who has all the money, but he didn't have insurance, and that's 100% on him.

If one of your staff members broke his arm at work performing work duties, workers comp would cover him for not only the medical costs but also wages (and workers comp policies can run indefinitely depending on the injury). This is the same situation. The panthers should be in the firing line to cover his medical costs because he was legitimately hurt playing for them. (which they wont)
They spruce about how much money the game is making these days and yet they cant even afford to look after players who got injured and are forced to retire through insurance policies. In wrestling, the WWE pays for all employees to have disability payout should they be injured competing and be unable to ever wrestle again. This should be mandatory in the NRL, not optional.

As far as I know, the WWE don't do shit for injured wrestlers. In fact, I'm pretty sure they don't even pay them while injured, even when they're still under contract. They pay their wrestlers like subcontractors. Injured and can't do a show? No money for you.

They're actually being sued by retired wrestlers as we speak due to their dodgy employment practices.

Not if you're a contractor though.

Not saying the panthers are in the right. In fact, I think I'll tweet Phil Gould and ask him what the Panthers are doing for Docker, since he was quite vocal about Simon Dwyer and always saying how great the Broncos are to Yow Yeh.....

The wrestlers are suing over concussions the wrestlers suffered whilst in the ring which is leading to the effects they are having now having not wrestled for years and are arguing their duty of care to that. (this will happen eventually to the NRL) All of them who were legitimately injured in the ring whilst performing have had insurance payouts due to it.

I was genuinely curious so I looked into this. As far as I can tell, the insurance payouts are from their own personal insurance, but I may be wrong. And as far as injury pay goes, if they've already met their minimum contracted income from merchandise etc for the year, the WWE aren't obliged to pay them a single cent of their salary while injured.

Your right about the concussion thing. I got confused with something else I read where the contracts were under fire for a blatant lack of employee protection.

They're not contractors though, at least as far as I know.

From what I can tell, it was Alex McKinnon's accident which bought in Workers Compensation for professional athletes.

He should have made sure he had medical insurance.

I was under the impression the NRL or clubs were now giving players being forced to retire due to injury insurance payouts.

Isn't that one of the things the RLPA were pushing for?

Going off the info from the Watmough and Docker cases, they only get paid out the rest of their contract. Perhaps there's something more recent that Docker was too late for.

The insurance mentioned in Watmough's case seemed to be covering Parramatta's arse, not the Watmough's ie. covering their losses in paying a non-playing player.

There was talk of an insurance payout in the Jack Reed articles, but I don't know whether that would pay more than the remainder of his contract.

Well it really is stupid these contracts don't have medical insurance already included for situations like this..

I think they did make changes to it. But why is it on the club? Do you EXPECT your employer to give you health insurance? No, if you get it, it's a bonus. So then you go and get it yourself.

He fucked up by not having an appropriate level of cover.

You're right, it shouldn't be on the club, but there should be some competition-wide fund or whatever that the players are FORCED to contribute to as part of their employment. Just like they are all made to get an education or trade when they start in the NYC.

What does the AFL do? Or Union? Not trying to poke fun at the NRL, I'm genuinely curious what the other codes do in this space (if anything).
