AFL & NRL Asked to take mid season break during World Cup

Perhaps everyone should look at the bigger picture and realise just how much hosting the World Cup would benefit Australia.

It would be massive.

No fucking way. OK, going to bring people here...also going to cost us a fucking fortune to upgrade venues etc, and to shorten or whatever our AFL and NRL competitions will cost MILLIONS...

So basically if they're wanting to have it here, they have to compromise and move their European competitions to after the World Cup. Don't like it? Then Australia just never hosts it.

No loss.

It's like saying "we accept that soccer is the superior code". Eff that.

No Loss? What if Sydney had never had the Olympics - think of all the stadiums/ areas that would require original names? [icon_ee

This is an international event that would help our flagging tourism, particularly from Europe - if it is a big enough priority for the nation, an accord will be reached with the NRL/AFL, however, it depends whether we get it, and I know England is bidding for it, and with their 2million fans who already live there, as opposed to our 4 fans, I believe it will be a tall order for us to win it

We haven't much chance of hosting it in 2018, but 2022 is a real possibility.

England will land it in 2018 I reckon.

2022. so thats 10yrs for the NRL to have a plan in place. Its do Able (yes 10yrs need it worked out early)

Ah well, by 2022 NRL will be a minor sport anyway :P

Nuh. I think it might bring more overseas visitors, mainly because it goes longer and is spread across more cities, but on the whole I think fewer Australians will care.

I think you're underestimating it. [icon_wink

Jarryd Hayne and Ben Kennedy to be empoyed by the italians as their diving couches.

Seriously if the NRL and AFL cant think of something to do about it in 6-10years then WTF!

You reckon? Can't agree. Just because our domestic soccer competition isn't of great quality, it doesn't mean that interest in the game itself it's big. Remember when Australia made it through to the World Cup for '06? Well it was pretty big. You'd have people talking about it everywhere, even people who didn't like the game. I too was VERY surprised about the amount of interest in the game at the time. Now just imagine if Australia HOSTS a soccer World Cup. It'll me massive and it could potentially be bigger than the Olympics.

Yeah, the interest will be HUGE - until the Socceroos get knocked out. Then nobody will care.

I suppose the one good thing to come out of it will be that the government will spend millions and millions upgrading every rectangular stadium in the country.

Yes, the success of the socceroos will be a huge factor in the interest people will have, however, personally, as someone who doesn't give a rats' about it, I know, if there was a top quality game in Brisbane, I would trek out to have a watch, and I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one (though of course I don't know who are quality so....)

Yeah hard for me to say with it so far away, but I can't imagine bothering to go and watch a game live. I might watch on TV but that's it.

It just doesn't interest me. And I'm sure there'll be thousands like me.

Frankly I don't think it'd be worth the HUNDREDS of millions of dollars the government would have to spend upgrading all the stadiums to standard, many of which would never see numbers like that again (particularly in places like Adelaide, Perth etc).

I doubt FIFA would send it our way anyway.

same time some of the stadiums used for Rugby league would see those numbers again.

Dairy Farmers could sell 35,000 as long as the cowboys are doing well

Upgraded Stadium in Perth or Adelaide could give reason to try some NRl games there

Yes, but the mass interest won't be there, mate.

Yeah and think of all the debt NSW wouldn't STILL be in? [icon_razz1

I can't agree there. Even when the Socceroos weren't making the World Cup Finals, the interest from fans in Australia was still HUGE.
