All Stars vs Indig.. news and game talk

He's had about 2 good moments for the Cowboys too. Both in the one game against the Bulldogs in 2006 I think it was.

Doesn't mind conceding a penalty or below average lateral movement..

So you came up with only 2 memorable moments in 15 games to try and dispel the belief that Carl Webb is a myth?

That's the whole point why Carl Webb is a myth. They are the only 2 good things he's ever done

hes only a 'myth' if you got caught up in the hype of thinking hes the best thing since sliced bread. hes always been a good player, and he has done some great things. sure he was no gorden tallis, but how many players are? he has been an above average player for all his career, and deserved his spots in the origin teams.

you dont like him, fantastic, good for you. doesnt change the fact that the only people that say hes useless are the people that had too high expectations.

lol @ 'he shouldnt be in first grade'.

3/4 of the nrl forwards shouldnt be in first grade then.

Whether or not he should be in first grade, there is no way he is an "above average player". He may have been in the early stages of his career but these days he is ordinary, at best.

Look, clearly the odds are stacked against Webb - look at the replies.

AP, I'm a massive Origin fan and to sum it up it comes down to this... (imo)

2001- We know what happened there. The thing is - a great as a moment it was, he never could repeat such moments and furthermore didn't even have any consistency to his origin games. During the 03-05 QLD selectors had the wrong mentality... they kept selecting him with the mind frame that he was going to pull off something which he never did. He had that brief clash in 05 with Bailey and that was about it. The thing I remember most was at half time in one of the games QLD were in big trouble and Fatty said something along the lines of "You know what I'm expecting in the second half? Something big from Carl Webb - his going to get really aggressive and lead QLD home bla bla"... of course nothing of the sort happened and we were lapped by Joey's men. He was supposedly meant to be the whole 'Tallis' factor but he never was... hence the 'myth'.

Finally the selectors got it right and he is more a back up if needed now and certainly not part of the nucleus.

Yep, but what that says is there's a LOT of average or below average first graders at the moment.

Wouldn't the fact that there is that "hype" indicate that he is considered overrated in many circles? Underserved Hype = Overrated/Myth IMO.

Dude, he should not be in first grade.

I disagree. I think he's worthy of being a first grade footy player when compared to others going around, but he ceratinly doesn't deserve to have the number of origin or test games he has.

He's an average player, but he never earnt the right to be somewhat of an automatic selection in rep teams based on what he might do in the game, cause he very very rarely delivered.

Exactly Jeb. AP, if you seriously think he's an above average player than I'm very sorry but that's a little bit embarrassing mate. Seriously, in all honesty..
you obviously havent seen the average quality of NRL players these days. when people on this forum get so excited over players like Minto, Kelly, Michaels and Perry, I'm very sorry, but thats extremely embarrassing.

Carl Webb may not be among the best players running around, but he is above average.

Wait.... that post just killed it man. shoulda kept the bait going.

No one around here gets excited about Minto, Kelly, Michaels or Perry.[/quote:2xjndwnv]

How dare you Perry is a premiership winning halfback!

Exactly, Webb early in his career and for very brief periods has since then has been above average but the rest of the time and particularly now he is well and truly average.

Not prolonged, no. But there were occasions all 4 had excellent games and received plaudits.

Probably about as often as Carl Webb lived up to his potential and delivered great performances.

This thread is now like, 3 pages of Carl Webb.. COME ON.

anymore. you mean 'No one around here gets excited about Minto, Kelly, Michaels or Perry anymore', because they sure as hell did when they were in the team.

Piddy sure most of the acclaim Minto and Kelly in particular got was tongue in cheek. Certainly our group's love of Minto was for his scary (AHHHHHHHBOOOOOOO!) looks.

Don't confuse cult following with rating someone as a great footballer.

Minto.

Now there is a fella I WOULD go gay for.
