Areas That Need Fixing for 2017

I just thought I'd create a new thread so everyone can discuss areas we need to fix or can improve perhaps with some smart recruitment etc.

Firstly, we need bigger front rowers. Time and time again we're being out-muscled and it needs to stop if we're ever going to be a genuine chance to do something in the competition. Willingness, desire, energy and effort go a long way to winning a game, but realistically it will only get you so far especially when we're coming up against a pack that has all the above qualities, but are also physically bigger than you.

We are constantly losing the yardage battle and it's time we have a few players who can match it physically with the likes of the Cowboys, Storm, etc. Pretty much every other pack is bigger than us and it puts too much pressure on our defence.

I'm not suggesting a major overhaul or anything like that, because the players we have currently still provide us with a very valuable point of difference with their mobility and skill. Its just too hard to fully utilise their abilities when were struggling to make metres and are getting dominated by the opposition.

The likes of McGuire, Blair and Thaiday will be most effective running off the back of someone who can lay a platform. They're the sort of players who are best taking the second or third hit-up, or right after someone that can get some good go forward and can also generate a quick play the ball. As a pack, we're all a bit similar to each other, and none of us are big enough to be used as a battering ram.

I wouldn't necessarily look at buying someone overly skillful, since more often than not they try to become play makers rather than just tucking it under the wing and running hard. Someone who is a bit more one dimensional and tradesman like, who only knows one way, which is straight ahead.

My first preference would be to look at recruiting Paul Vaughan from the Raiders. He seems out of favour at the Raiders, but I rate him fairly highly. I'd also look at Sam Tagataese who is a bit of an unsung hero at the Sharks.

There are a few high profile players such as Ben Matulino, who has gone a bit stale at the Warriors, maybe we can convince him, but I doubt it with Kearney heading there, or maybe even JWH.

What do you guys reckon?

Also, the loss of Parker is huge, and to be honest, I'm not convinced Arrow can go from being a bench player who plays limited minutes, to our 80 minute lock on a full time basis, especially defensively. It seems a bit of a stretch even if Arrow is a promising player of the future.

I'd therefore look to Shaun Fensom, who is another one at the Raiders who isn't getting a crack in the top grade for whatever reason. I think he is a very good player, and will regularly get 80 mins out. Not only will this keep our middle third nice and tight, but the fact he won't use up an interchange allows us to rotate the rest of the forward pack to provide impact or to continue the momentum.

One or two props (Napa and Vaughan would be nice) and a halfback.

Good post!! 100% agree! Our forwards are lacking strength and size! When i have chats to my footy mates they always say this is where broncos lack. Sign someone like jason taumoulolo (currently off contract) if not maybe napa?
I think we need our halves to be abit more consistent especially 5th play options. Not puttinf them down but ye

Kicking, kick chase, metres gained by forwards, coaching, defence, attack, attitude, depth. What else?

Our halves = All talent, no class. All impulse, no composure.

Our forwards have to play out of their skin to compete. They must be the fittest dam forwards in the game as there is no let up, no repeat sets, no structure.

I agree about the forwards for example last night Jason Taumalolo and matt Scott, there forwards were just making lots of metres we went good for the first 15minutes around there smashing but then lost our puff. id like to sign more big fellas then wingers and centres. And ones that have experience.

Captaincy. This year we seemed to have virtually no on field direction whatsoever. When we needed someone to lead the way last night our captain was down on his haunches in backplay getting a breather.

Boyd stepped up and tried his best, out of what we have, he seems the most inspirational to me and likely to give the guys a rev up if they need it. I didn't see that from Parker.

Defensive line speed. We can do it, we showed against Melbourne and at certain other times throughout the year. We just need to do it to a high level consistently, particularly if we are going to stick with a smaller pack. We need multiple bodies in defence to compensate for our lack of size, which means fitness has to go through the roof this off-season.

Kicking. We need to work on it like crazy. Time and time again it cost us over the last two seasons and just isn't up to scratch against top teams. Both in play and goal kicking.

Composure. After all the finals footy and representative footy our guys have played over the last two years (or more) one would think composure would be understood by our playmakers, but it isn't. They panic and invariably this lack of composure ends up costing us games, just like last night. None of our spine are inexperienced any longer, they need to get their sh*t together when it matters most if we are ever going to be a genuine force. Whether some measure of it can be found through ridiculously rehearsed set plays or something I don't know. But the best players in the comp seem to know what they are going to do in every situation whereas we seem to make it up on the fly. We don't need to play like Melbourne, but taking a leaf out of their book and extensive drilling plays that can be executed whilst under fatigue would help this significantly I think.

Agree with a lot of whats been said already. We need a big prop, we need a half back who can manage a game, and organise and let Hunt and Milf fight it out for 5/8, maybe even hunt to compete for the hooker spot.

What i would like to see is to get our big young forwards just playing things simple. We have some big bodied forwards like Herman, but they never just seem to run hard with any impact. Its something we need to get into their heads.

Also, and i dont know where we are going to get him from, but we need more leaders in the team. Boyd aside, we have nothing, especially players who lead by example and inspire the team when the going gets tough. I suppose over the years we have been spoiled with players like Webcke, Lazarus, Petero, Tallis, Langer, Locky etc who have been capable of inspiring their team mates with big moments in games when things arent going our way. I just dont see that any more.

Stop the team making 60m a set would be a good start. We just gifted them field last night. If it's not through their running back of the ball, it's us dropping the ball, and giving away absolutely piss weak penalties.

A lot to look forward to next year.

I'm honestly re-thinking our halves. Milford seems to have had a Ben barba form slump. Get someone like Aidan sezer/Adam reynolds to organise

TBF, it looks like Milf has been playing injured for a couple of months. We need to look at our depth a bit more. We have pretty much been carrying Opacic, Gillett and Milf due to injury,( and i have a feeling Roberts has never fully got over his hip injury ) and i always worry about Kahu. Macca has struggled on and off as well this season. Our backup hooker options are shocking.
