Areas That Need Fixing for 2017

I'm just wondering if all the talk from the media and fans that our halves need to learn to steer the ship around better didn't hurt their confidence and took them away from what was successful last year.

Look at Milford for example. Last year and even at the start of this year he was buzzing around looking for offloads, popping up on either side of the ruck, getting involved, not really playing to any structure and absolutely killing it. The second half of the year though, he just parked himself on the one side of the ruck and just looked like he was going through the motions and trying to fake it that he can organise.

I understand that as a half you need to have some sort of organisational skills but I tend to think you play to your strengths and I don't think either of them did that at the end of the year. They looked like they were trying too hard to be the perfect organisational half and it didn't work for them. Last year though.......

Getting somewhere to the heart of it. Milford is the magic man for now. Hunt is (or is supposed to be) the organiser.

That on the back of a forward roll on, is the way to success.

Surely this all has to be bullshit!!

The kid just doesn't appear to be that arrogant for mine.....and really, it would be a WB call. If Wayne wants you to listen to someone....you're going to fucking listen.

I also read an article last year that he turned down Lockyer because he thought he could do it himself. I thought that was stupid, considering Lockyer convinced him to come to the Broncos and vowed to transition him into a five-eighth.

I sort of disagree on Milford of late though. He was certainly humble early on in his career, but for me Milford seems to have gotten a bit of a big head recently with all the fame and success. Hopefully he can come back down to earth quickly and stop believing all the hype in the media.

I think this season we went away from our style of play. In 2015, we had a distinct style. The way we played was just so unique and catered to our strengths. It was different from the carbon copy style that most teams play with in recent years. We didn't have block plays, our halves played to each other, probably more than other team, our attacking shape was just so different from the rest of the competition.

I think this season we should have further developed that, but instead I think we reverted back to a bit more of a generic style, and it was not nearly as effective. I think with our success last season, we set a precedent for other clubs and now you see a few teams this season go away from the general style of play, such as the Raiders, Panthers, Sharks, even the Tigers and they've all had success in finding a style which suits there team.

I'm not sure if its because Bennett lacks the tactical coaching these days and the loss of Walters really was too big a void to fill, but I think we need to find our own unique style again.

Why do we need a couple of ****roaches when we have on hand, Langer, Walters and Lockyer? 3 of the best halves to ever play the game.

^^THIS^^...we should get in early. I reckon he'll turn into one of the all time greats.

You are well aware that Wally Lewis is one of the worst coaches off all time. He had no idea and was divisive.

Beside from a few exceptions no great player makes it as a coach.

He didn't get along with many of the clubs owners and constantly fought between himself and the executives and board members. He was always at odds with someone there. It wasn't a healthy environment. Old friends of my mum on the Gold Coast one of them has connections with someone who had something to do with the Seagulls and they said he was hopeless. The only positive thing he did was that he did attract Dale Shearer and some other notable names and a few good juniors did come through, crowd numbers also lifted but it was a failure overral.

One of the greatest players no doubt about that but coaching was defiantly not his thing.

Thanks for sharing.

The Gold Coast wasn't a healthy franchise from the day it was brought in. They should never have existed, the NRL was just so stubborn that the Brisbane license went to the consortium they disliked they gave it to a lesser organisation.

Lewis had them playing competitive footy, but there's only so much you can do with lemons.

I'm not prepared to go all doom and gloom.

A big bopper is all we need. We had such a horrible run of injuries this year compared to last, so many on top of the origin period, had guys playing injured at the end, we honestly did better than I was expecting considering all I mentioned.

Sign Boyd or Napa and we're set. The off season will do us the world of good.

This isn't a big deal but has anyone noticed a change in Milf attitude on the field?

He he used to come across as very humble, and would smile a lot and dig in and work hard. Now I've started to notice he always looks frustrated, he tries to milk a penalty any time he gets tackled, he's a bit of a princess with the ball, and blows up when he calls for the ball and doesn't get it.

Your mum's old friend who lives on the GC, who knows someone with something to do with a club. How reliable a source is she?

Go back to the start of the year. The entire team would be enjoying football, laughing, smiling etc. None of them were doing that later in the year.

I would love to see this for a trial next year:

1. Boyd (c)
2. Oates
3. Kanu
4. MPJ
5. Pearson
6. Milford
7. KNik
8. McGuire
9. McCullough
10. Blair
11. Thaiday
12. Gillett
13. Arrow

14. Hunt
15. TPJ
16. Fai
17. Glenn

I remember reading somewhere about when Lewis was coaching the Seagulls the side was pumped for a great showing on an away match against the Steelers and even confident of a great showing. The club put them up at a local caravan site citing financial problems prior to the match, Lewis was furious and I would be too, your trying to motivate your players and shit like that is dished out just before the game that is only counterproductive.

Milford and Boyd staring at the ref for 5 seconds before playing the ball annoys me more than anything else.

I agree. It also give's me the shits more than anything. Often when they are getting held down, they can still generate a quick play the ball if they even attempted to get up and play the ball, but every single time they take an eternity to get up and just stare at the ref. It kills any momentum and just lets the opposition defence reset. Boyd's been doing it for years. Milford seems to have picked it up at the Broncos. I don't remember him doing it at the Raiders.

It sounds simplistic, but we need to fix our go forward and short kicking game. Signing a bloke like Napa would pretty much solve the issues in the forwards, especially with blokes like Pangai and Su'a getting better with experience. Maybe niko is a better option at hb, my biggest doubt is his long range kicking game, but we have a full off season to examine our options.
