Ashes Discussion

Schadenfreude.

Enforcing the follow on, not enforcing, doesn't matter if you win. Will be a huge win for Australia even though it came down to the last session.

Yeah, will only need a draw from here to retain the Ashes.

Hopefully Richardson can get his 5th wicket.

Losing this game makes the Gabba decision to bat first under overcast skies while resting their 2 guns up there with the time Hussain sent us out to bat

Won't get the scrutiny in deserves in years to come but in my view it was just as bad a decision

So I imagine Hazlewood will be kept on ice for the next test too given it is in less than a week and we'll see Cummins, Starc and Richardson as the three quicks (plus Green of course). Very happy for Neser to get what will likely be his one and only test, he certainly didn't disappoint!

Every time I’ve watched Jhye bowl he has killed it, in all formats and at all levels.

Starc and Lyon were really good too leading the attack, both could’ve bagged a few more with some luck.

And I look forward to watching Green bowl when he is fired up sometime in the future, need some opponent to get under his skin.

Gee Ollie Pope has been disappointing from an England perspective. He was meant to be their saviour.

When you look at his FC stats it's surprising just how bad he's looked in the first couple of Tests.

95 innings - 4,201 runs at an average of 51.23, 13x 50's, 12x 100's & a highest score of 274.

He's looked that bad 99% of his test career thus far. This is the problem with stats with England, look how bad their test side is and then look at the guys running around in county cricket, very few have decent batting averages and this inevitably makes the bowling averages look better than they are. English cricket is at a real low point.

Reminds me a lot of the low point of Aus cricket in that 2017-18 period, they're talking about potentially bringing in T20 players like Vince, Livingstone, Jordan, etc. Like when we brought in guys like Finch & Cartwright in hopes they'd somehow translate in to decent Test players.

Yeah that sums it up well. Who knows what you do to address it if you don’t have anyone coming through. I’d say they need to look at who the guys are who are proving themselves to be almost or at standard and that really only leaves Root, Stokes, Woakes in certain conditions and as much as I hate to say it, Robinson. I don’t include Broad and Anderson because they are both on their last legs as great as they truly have been.

Then, who are the young guns you need to build around and give opportunities to? I genuinely don’t know because Pope seemed the shining light and he sucks. So do you keep persisting with him and look at guys who migh struggle for ages but eventually come good in Hameed, Lawrence, et al? Who knows.

And yet Marnus has become the player he is due to county cricket, and I believe Renshaw learnt some fundamentals about his technique over there as well (when his technique was good that is).

If England didn't bowl so many no balls and held on to their catches this would be a close series. Their horrendous fielding has been compounded by really bad decision making both on the team sheet and at the toss.

Archer and Wood should be their trump cards here and yet both guys have their feet up. There are certainly a few passengers in their side, particularly in the top order, but I don't think the gap between the two sides is as large as the results so far suggest.

Personally I've been impressed by Malan and Robinson. If they can find a half decent opener before the next Ashes series they'll be right in the mix to win the urn.

Malan is old, he might not even make the next Ashes.

I reckon England are a long way off being competitive here, their problem is they can't take 20 wickets and with Anderson surely on the cusp of retirement and Broad whilst he's probably got another tour here left in him he's not very threatening in our conditions.

Their spinners, Leach got belted out of the attack in the first game to the point where in the 2nd game they were of the opinion that Joe Root's part time off-spin would've done the job and in all fairness it probably did but still, they don't have a world class top line spinner who can bowl 20 overs in an innings and consistently bowl good balls.

Just on Leach, it's been said he has a good average, it's clear to see why that is. They obviously only play him when they believe the conditions will suit.

England could take 20 wickets but the two guys who can in Wood and Archer are made of glass.
