Ashes Discussion

On another note where would people seriously rank Mitch Swepson in test spinning ranks across the world?
I think it's only fair to judge him on that after we've seen him play test cricket.

If you asked the same question of Labuschagne before his test call up I certainly wouldn't have said he's the best batsman in the world haha.

What are you talking about? The only changes since the gabba are Cummins/Hazlewood which were forced changes.

What if Swepson comes in against a team like England who suck, and then takes 0/100.

I'm a fan of Swepson, but should only be picked if Lyon is unavailable.
Firstly 2 games now we haven’t played with our full pace attack which would suggest that’s not our full strength side. We are already entering game 4 without Head and possibly Hazlewood or Starc (rested). Last time I checked that isn’t our full side.

As for the final part I suggest you read cause I said the exact same thing.

True, I will re-word it. What countries in the world would we reckon Swepson plays in?

Well definitely England, probably RSA and NZ too. India have arguably two of the greatest of all time so not them. Can't comment on the other sub-continent sides.

I don't want to harp this back to our previous convo but Swepson has a considerably better FC average than Lyon had when he was first picked for Aus. That's not to say he is better than Lyon or will go on to take 400 test wickets, but I do think it's worth taking a look at him as the potential is there.

I’d say for Swepson:

Australia - second spinner
NZ - second spinner easily
England - would walk in as their spinner
Pakistan - might make second spinner but not sure he’d make it in
India - he’d likely make their L team, they are not wanting for spinners
SA - he’d challenge Maharaj but not replace him, would be their second spinner
Afghanistan - No chance, they have 85 class spinners already
Bangladesh - He’d be their second spinner but all that depends on Al Hasan and whether he’s retired or not
Ireland - First or second player picked in the side
Sri Lanka - he’d likely be a second or third consideration, not sure he makes it
West Indies - he’s considered as first or second spinner depending on their view of Walsh and Warrican plus their availability
Zimbabwe - likely second spinner but regardless, he walks into their XI

I said we should be picking our best XI, this clearly means picking from players who are available for selection. That should be pretty obvious and not need any clarification.

Yesterday I said about this SCG spinning myth.

Averages pace/spin.

2000-2006 40.31/37.55
2007-2013 32.10/43.17
2014-2020 43.33/49.34

The second spinner debate rages but does it need to?

Thankfully they resisted the urge to give Swepson a sympathy cap and went with 3 quicks and the spinner. Usman replaces Head at 5 as the only change.

Can we have him and Neser back for the heat then... feel like there is no point having these guys when they just sit on the pine for Aust for 2.5 months

Lyon got picked on limited overs form initially . Remember ?

So we all agree the ideal outcome is that Usman scores 100+, Harris inevitably fails and the selectors have no choice but to move Usman back up to open?

I guess so but as much as I don't rate him, I would like to see Harris prove us all wrong, I just don't think it is going to happen.

Not since Bob Holland and Murray Bennet ? LOL .

As an all rounder batting 5-6. Not a specialist opening batsman.

Not an alrounder in Tests ...
ODI yes def . I don`t remember him bowling or taking wickets before he got dropped from the test team
??

Edit I looked up his stats . He did bowl . After 20 games he had 30 wickets @ 35

He batted # 3 and #4 a bit when he debuted as well if my memory serves me ?

15 innings #3 or 4 in his 1st cpl of years .

I think the SCG has that brand as being a spinner's dream because it seems to be the pitch that deteriorates the most, which is when any spinner would be a handful, regardless of how good they are. Providing they can consistently put it in the right areas.
