Auckland 9 Squads

It's frustrating isn't it?

Traditionally the Broncos have always been stragglers in this regard. Until the NRL completely streamlined the process, the Broncos were typically the last team to announce their side and would often forget to announce their 20s side.

The only time I recall it being different was Round 1 2013 where the Broncos announced their side an entire week before the game.

Speaking of, isn't team-list Tuesday changing this season? Maybe I'm just getting my wires crossed, but I remember reading that a change in policy had caused Big League to scrap team-lists from their magazine.

I definitely remember reading something re: team-list Tuesday changing, I just can't recall when, where or how.

I remember it being mentioned that it was changing to Thursday's. Only remember because the SuperCoach world was blowing up about it as now there's only a day to sort your team before lockout on Fridays now. First world problems!

That sounds wrong, especially given the Thursday games...

Eels Likely 9
Radradra, Folau, Toutai, Norman, Cornish, Paulo, King, Ma'u, Moeroa

A couple of big names in the side, but also a few weak links that I suspect will hurt the Eels on the day. Sandow is a big loss at this level and I don't know if Norman can play at his best without Cornish being able to lead the way. They're in one of the weaker conferences so I suspect they'll at least make the knock out stages, but can't see them taking it.

Keeping an eye on...

Bevan French - Was one of the brighter prospects of an otherwise lousy Eels NYC side. The young fullback has all the skills and if Gordon struggles, he'll challenge Gutherson for the vacant position.

Bulldogs
Abbey, Holland, Stanley, Chisolm, Kasiano, Garvey, Lane, Williams, Eastwood

Another year, another half-arsed Auckland 9s squad from Des. Fortunately you have a number of other clubs pitching in so it doesn't stick out as much as other pre-season selections (*cough*Maranta-gate*cough*) but still. If the selections are anything to go by, the Dogs will bow out in the opening rounds, which is actually a shame because their pack could cause some damage. If they play through the middle with Kasiano, Garvey, Eastwood etc. they could pick up a few wins. Unfortunately their backline is incredibly green and uninspired, rendering them easy-beats.

Manly
Tom Trbojevic, Taufua, Williame, Issac John, Jake Trbojevic, Parcell, Lawrence, Mateo, Buhrer

I wouldn't be surprised to see Manly perform better this year than last. Sometimes you go into a tournament like this with high profile players, they're rusty and the plays they go for simply don't come off on the day. That's what Manly's 2015 campaign came across like. This year with the Trbojevic brothers around, Parcell and Mateo they find themselves with a really solid core that could trouble plenty of sides. On paper, not the best looking side but pending on who the Broncos name, could easily find themselves in the finals.

Melbourne
Munster, Koroibete, Kennar, Green, Hampton, Asofa-Solomona, Seluini, Finucane, Harris

Like Dessie, the Auckland 9s is merely an obligation for Bellamy and an opportunity to get his players on the paddock. I'm really surprised by the lack of Slater in this squad, it seemed like he was the face of this year's competition and would be at the forefront of all the media appearances. It's disappointing, but at least it gives us an opportunity to watch Cameron Munster. Of all the players, I believe Munster was one of the form players at the back-end of the 2015 season and I'm excited to see what the future holds for young Cam. It's fair to say he holds the key, but I struggle seeing them pass the pool stages unless Souths and Sydney name similar sides.

Cowboys
Coote, Feldt, Linnett, Winterstein, Bowen, Tamou, Granville, Cooper, Taumalolo

North Queensland have taken a page from South Sydney's playbook and back up their premiership victory by naming a strong side for the Auckland 9s. The combination of power and speed places the Cowboys at the top of the Rangitoto division and it's clear to see where the Cowboys bread and butter lies.

Dynamo hooker Jake Granville would be an early contender for the MVP race. His darts from dummy half proved lethal, even on the grandest stage, and he'll challenge plenty of sides. In support, Tamou, Taumalolo, Linnett and Cooper will provide the Cowboys with plenty of strength across the field which meshes well with the likes of Coote, Bowen and Granville who sniff opportunities out like nobody's business.

Player To Watch - Gideon Mosby-Gela

Souths
Johnston, Oldfield, Auva'a, C. Walker, T. Burgess, McInnes, Turner, Sutton, Grevsmuhl

The defending champions enter the 2016 Auckland 9s worse for wear. The losses of Dylan Walker and Issac Luke have had immediate effect, which in concert with the omissions of Reynolds and G. Burgess has hurt the overall make-up of the team. The key for Souths will come in the form of Johnny Sutton. The old stager has plenty of tricks up his sleeve and if he can execute them early it maybe enough for an otherwise unremarkable South Sydney squad.
