Yep I know but the batting is going to be the same no matter who you pick, they all suck. At least with Patterson you are likely to get some runs and hopefully avoid the usual collapse. He’s good for 30-60 most innings, just once he gets there, you tell the next guy to get ready. Most other batsmen are 0 or 80 types.
He is a 50 specialist. Which in Tests would become a 26 specialists.

I just feel you can't drop M.Marsh for non-performing and pick Renshaw for non-performing. Don't mind your side Battler Battler but I do feel Burns should be in Renshaw's spot. The res is hard to argue with.

Pretty pathetic when the second best available batsman behind Khawaja is S.Marsh, a guy who averages 35 in test cricket.
I'm not a West Australian so I don't automatically rate QLDers just from being from my state. I still have question marks over Burns outside of Australia, but he could be what we need for this series; I'm not convinced that he'll be good in England which is the series we should have in mind. Renshaw, outside of his start to the shield season, has been performing very well in FC cricket and will be a mainstay in our side, he has to be there imo. We will need him in England, picking blokes like Harris and Burns who will score well on Aus roads (anyone we pick will) is fine for this upcoming series, but the selectors will convince themselves, like they did for the Marsh brothers, that because they plundered runs on decks with zero tricks against shit attacks that they'll be able to face swing bowling on green English decks.

Renshaw can't be there, he's been terrible this year. Paine is vital to this team, you can't change the captain now and his keeping has been unreal- not too sure what else you want from your keeper?

I don't like the Wade idea- where does he field? Is his fielding Test match standard?

Short as in Darcy? The guy that can't make the WA side? You're looking to reward his 23 average season from last year?

Or Matt?
Matt Short, he looks like a very assured player in defence and is averaging mid 40's. He needs to keep performing but he looks the goods.

I think Wade was fielding at point or cover yesterday? Couldn't really tell from the stream. He's averaging 100+ this year, and has been averaging over 40 since he was dropped. He's also averaging close to 40 overall at FC level despite WKing most of his career. He's not at his calibre as a player obviously, but for example Sangakarra averaged under 50 until he gave up the gloves. Wade has also been performing in the lower middle order where we need runs and his 125-130km/h medium pacers are the equal of MMarsh's.

Paine has been good as a keeper, but if we have a number 6 averaging sub-30 we need a keeper batsman. I'm in favour of picking specialists in the state we're in at the moment, so he can stay. Just keep in mind that he hasn't scored a century for over a decade.

EDIT: it's not like Paine is the best gloveman in test cricket. Watling, Sarfraz, and Foakes are all as good with the gloves but are competent batsmen to boot.

Short needs to keep performing? He needs to perform- he is yet to score a 100 for Victoria. 238 from seven games isn't good enough or even of note to even be in the conversation. His 100 against a England side doesn't count.

Shield av is 26 after seven games.

You want Wade in for averaging 40 in Shield but want Paine dropped for averaging 38 in Tests? That stat about 100 is irrelevant I don't care if he never gets a 100- Keep and lead and get 38 his job is done.

Who would your Test XI be at this point 1 1910?
The batting unit are really the only question marks I guess. I would probably err on the side of caution and assume they will too. Assuming Uzzie plays against Victoria on Tuesday.

I am still thinking about it though.

That's a very poor team. I understand the idea that it's just a friendly warm-up game and we are trodding out blokes for India to plunder runs against, but jeez it would be nice if they'd thrown a chance to some guys who can stake a claim at selection.

Something like:
Travis Dean
Marcus Harris
Hilton Cartwright
Peter Handscomb (C)
Jake Lehmann
Jason Sangha
Sam Whiteman
Chris Tremain
Mark Steketee
Jhye Richardson
Lloyd Pope/Mitchell Swepson

The side is made up of guys who can't crack their respective shield teams.

It's understandable that the state teams are not wanting to release their best players for a warm up game..

No one has made a big effort, if you wanted to jump in you needed three or four 100's in the first four rounds. So team has to stay the same as the UAE. Which I think is smart at this stage.

I would like Tremain being included in the 12, I think we scream for the inclusion of the guy that gets 145 runs but forget about the guy taking 10 wickets a game.

That team would cost them selection in the Test team, Tremain can get some wickets against half hearted India thinking about a Test or he can be playing the Bulls and getting out Burns, Renshaw and Khawaja.

If I was a selector I know what I want my players doing.

I'm glad Handscomb is there, he shouldn't have been dropped in the first place.

Not sold on Harris over Renshaw, but with how Renshaw is performing it's understandable, the kid needs to learn to make runs more often. First test is in Adelaide, so you can almost guarantee Head will get first crack ahead of Handscomb.

1. Harris
2. S.Marsh
3. Khawaja
4. Head
5. Finch
6. M.Marsh
7. Paine (c)
8. Starc
9. Cummins
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood

12. Handscomb

Happy Tremain is in, his first class record is outstanding. I agree that will be the team as mentioned above but I would also prefer Handscomb over Head.

Pretty much as expected- no one gave them a choice. I think Harris batting such long periods has helped him. Good skill to have and not many do it anymore. That's impressed me more than his scores.

It's a shame that Renshaw was a better version of that when he first came in, constant pressure and criticism to score faster has lead him to take more risks than he needed to. Hopefully he goes back to scoring 50's off 150 balls and not caring about outside pressure.

Renshaw's problem is timing. He has started the last two seasons so poorly he misses the jump and then struggles to get it back.

804 runs last year is a good season but took him until round five to crack a 50.

First five rounds 99 runs from 9 bats.
Second five rounds 706 from 12 bats.

This year three matches 140 runs at 23.

I thought coming off his huge county year he would start the season well but he's struggled.

According to Paine, it'll likely be Harris & Finch opening. He also said that M.Marsh has the 6 spot at the moment, but if the conditions indicate that they'll only need their 4 front line bowlers, they could play all 6 batsmen instead.

I still think we need Handscomb at 4, otherwise we're going to be going in to the series with a left handed opener, and left handers at 3, 4 & 5. That'll be far too easy for the Indian bowlers.

My first Test side -

1. Finch
2. Harris
3. Khawaja
4. Handscomb
5. S.Marsh / Head
6. M.Marsh
7. Paine (c)
8. Starc
9. Cummins
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood

S.Marsh is not a maybe, he’s second bat picked after Khawaja unfortunately.

So assuming that Smith comes back in for Smarsh who will probably (should) retire after his ban is up, we're going to go to England with:
1. Warner
2. Bancroft
3. Khawaja
4. Smith
5. Head
6. MMarsh

Another away series loss to England, shame.

EDIT: We're seeing the dawn of a new golden boy in Head. He's done absolutely nothing to justify the undying love he's receiving from the selectors - he may as well be the Marshes long lost brother.

As an aside, did anyone see JL's press conference the other day? The guy is on another planet, like he's more out of it than Freddy.
