Australia vs India Discussion

Why?

He’s the most in-form batsman in Australia.

See previous 13 recalls and failures.

Also he may get you more runs but you lose them on missed chances and byes and everything else he lets through.

Wade should be a specialist batsman at this point, forget the keeping. He's out performing everyone.

Anyone on here who is suggesting we shouldn't pick Wade because he's a shit keeper is demonstrating how little attention they pay to first class cricket.

The bloke isn't even keeping anymore haha

Four catches against the Bulls in the first innings on Friday.

Kept in round 1, 2 and 6.

Paine round 3, 4, 5.

3 games and 11 catches.

You're saying he kept in the 3 shield matches in which Tim Paine wasn't available?.. Remarkable.

I believe the point is that he's scoring more runs than anyone else in the country by a country mile, and is scoring them consistently. I'd have no issue with him replacing Marsh, moving Handscomb & Head up to 4 & 5 respectively and batting Wade & Paine at 6 & 7.

72*, 51, 66*, 50, 137, 43, 63, 40 across only 6 matches is pretty impressive consistency.

Not really remarkable but opposite to he never keeps anymore like the claim.

That last out was very questionable.

Pretty happy with the result. Wasn’t expecting a win but proud we made them earn it without a collapse.

That top order though. I’d chuck Marsh or Uzzie as opener and push Finch down the order. Paine’s dismissal tho FMD

Hopefully the close result fires the boys up.

Well we only just lost.

I guess we should just stick with the same team again.

Some tail order resistance masked a side with some serious deficiencies and a result that heavily flattered the home side. Harris, Finch and Handscomb shouldn't be there but there isn't exactly any able replacements. It's going to be a long summer.

That just simply isn’t completely true. There are better options, even though they are by no means superstars.

If they must have SMarsh in the side, put him at opener with Burns and bring in Wade into the middle order along with any of Pucovski, Lehmann, Patterson, Short or Maxwell.

All the noise from Perth is that this wicket is WACA-like (which it probably won’t be) and the bats mostly suck, so play the fifth bowler:

1. Burns
2. S.Marsh
3. Patterson
4. Pucovski/Lehmann/Maxwell
5. Head
6. Wade (wk)
7. Cummins
8. Starc
9. Richardson/Neser
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood

You have just made the side much worse.

Burns- Been there, done that, he just isn't suited for the highest level.

Patterson- An OK player but not even on the radar of CA.

Pucovski- Possibly one for the future but he needs to get his personal life sorted first.

Lehmann- Far too inconsistent, struggles against spin.

Maxwell- Test Cricket requires a certain amount of patience. He would be cannon fodder against these extremely accurate Indian bowlers.

Wade- See Burns

Cummins at #7? Even he would scoff at that. He is no allrounder.

Richardson/Neser- Good options if one of the top three are unavailable.

M. Marsh in for Handscomb is likely the only change that'll be made for Perth.

So you refute my opinion...with opinion. Nice.

Burns is by no means a great of the game but he has an average of almost 37 with three test hundreds and is one of the most consistent bats in Shield out of an extremely bad bunch. Compare his FC career to either of Finch or Harris and it is a no contest. This one is not a good start to your argument.

Patterson may not be on the radar of CA but so what? Labushagne has played tests for Australia already, tells you everything you need to know about the selectors. Patterson is an extremely poor man's Joe Root in that he gets to 50 pretty regularly but doesn't go on with it. This would help allay the very common clump of wickets falling that this side regularly does.

Pucovski is a massive prospect as you said and is too raw to put in yet for sure but he is the one shining light in Australian batting obviously. At least help him know he is on the radar.

Lehmann is hard to argue. He is inconsistent and is a perfect symbol of the current batting situation in Australia for sure. That said, he is one of the better options out of a very bad bunch, no worse than Handscomb but certainly not necessarily better either. He has started the season well enough.

Maxwell is a conundrum. I disagree he would be cannon fodder. He may be but he also may be able to take the game on and counter attack when Australia gets into their inevitable bad situation. He could also end up getting himself out and so I can certainly understand the concern around him.

Wade would be chosen primarily because of his batting and because Paine is likely out of the second test with a finger injury. Wade is EASILY the best batsman in Shield this year and ahead of Burns, is the most consistent bat by far.

Cummins shouldn't be batting at 7 of course but why pick batsmen there who aren't going to score any more than the bowlers will?

Neser particularly has been batting better than most batsmen in Shield AND you get the bonus of him being a decent bowler. If he is in, he is the real number 7 and a good one too.

Richardson is a special case, I just rate the kid so much I want him in there. I'd probably pick him ahead of Starc, even though Starc obviously has that x-factor about him. I'm just a massive fan of this bloke, he reminds me a lot of Brett Lee actually, albeit completely different physique.

So long story short, some of these selections are arguable of course but there is no way this side is worse, let alone MUCH worse.

Whatever way the line up goes, I wouldn’t open with Marsh. If he can’t perform at 3 or 4 then he needs to go.

I really rate Pucovski, but if I was going to blood him it would be against Sri Lanka, not India considering we have two of the biggest tests of the year coming up. Marsh, despite his decent second innings knock, has been putrid for ages and shouldn't be going to England next year if we want to win, so I'd be saying cya later to him (I know he won't be dropped). Personally I'd go:

1. Harris (gotta give him a second test)
2. Burns (I'd pick Renshaw regardless of form because he needs to be playing in England, but Burns is better for this series)
3. Usman
4. Maxwell (has proven he can dominate Ashwin at all levels and is the best fielder in the world with a FC average of 41. Beyond belief that he hasn't played in Australia)
5. Head
6. Wade
7. Carey
8. Cummins
9. Tremain
10. Lyon
11. Hazle

Starc needs a spell out of the side to rest or whatever because his form this year has been crap.

EDIT: Make Lyon or Hazlewood the captain.
