Re: Round 16 Discussion
Mate, if most Souths supporters were like you, lol@souffs would have never taken off. Think about that!
We definitely have a very different impression about the majority of Rabbitohs fans. Discounting the ****wits on LU, the souffs fans I know personally up here in SEQ are all entitled pricks, who fit to a T the description I wrote before. Lines such as: "Now that we got [name a new player or coach], this team is going to take off and burn the competition". Or the "Looks like we finally are going to return to the place we belong, at the top of the NRL". Or the more incisive "Your club just arrived on the scene and has nothing on the Glorious Rabbitohs. Just look at our trophee room and the Big 20". "Once we return to our right full glory, you'll just be another pygmee we crush". I shit you not, this is the kind of stuff I hear every year!
I don't know if this is a Rocky type desperation after so many years of utter crapness, but it wears very thin.
I come from Europe, and have supported a 130 years old proud soccer club all my life: FC Porto.
The last 25 years have been amazing for a club who doesn't have the resources of most European giants, or our greatest rivals from Lisbon in Benfica and Sporting.
But until the last 25 years, we were belittled, humiliated and disadvantaged by the powers that be and those clubs from the capital.
The club put in place a wide network of scouts to find the unpolished gems and turn them into the stars of the game, only to see them being regularly poached by the European giants such as ManUtd, Chelsea, Madrid or Milan, with whom we cannot compete financially.
Still, we have won 17 Portuguese championships, 11 Portuguese Cups, 2 Champions Leagues, 2 UEFA Cups, 1 European Supercup, 2 World Cups and a host of other minor trophees in the last 25 years, making us the most successfull soccer team in the World in that period.
Now, what do we hear from our rivals supporters and leadership?
- We bought the refs, we're just a puny regional club who will soon be put back in its place. They have won this many titles in a previous century and are the pride and kings of the Portuguese league, and will return to their rightful place, blah blah etc...
Ring a bell? I thought so...
So yes, I know what it is to be a club without titles (we spent 19 years without a single premiership due to the Lisbon clubs dominance aided by the totalitarian regime at the time), and have witnessed how we grew by scouting, discovering the best youngsters, developping them, all the while becoming a known brand for being a club that offers great sporting reward to its players.
We have proven that you can become a top team without resorting to the cheque book, but by being resourceful and having a great organisation.
Back to the NRL, the Broncos have the resources and the financial power most teams don't have, but what attracted me most to them and makes them my club, is the culture of cultivating your own resources, developping your own players, and making yourself the envy of the NRL for the right reasons!
Guess what, most other supporters hate us for it. Talk about weak reasons...
