Bellamy to retire after 2016

Bellamy created the ‘big three’ from ISC players, he went to the Storm without them and certainly didn’t know he was going there getting three absolute great players. He completely revamped that club from what he took over which was a shambles. They missed the finals in 2002 and 2001 the two years before he got there and sacked two coaches in two years before him.

The players he has taken from ISC and made NRL is phenomenal. He was a rookie coach in a league waste land, he's cleaned the place out, used the ISC and turned the sport around in a whole state.

His big test is to reinvent the Storm, you can’t wrestle anymore and the team has not evolved as well as it should, maybe they thought the rule changes wouldn’t have such an impact. Players are also ageing.

They've great development and great young players. He's got plenty to work with still and even post big three if he wanted to do it all over again he could take up the challenge.

Who did the Storm lose after they were busted cheating the salary cap?

"Created the big 3 from ISC players"? Come on, it's not like they were struggling 22 year olds just looking for a break.

Did David Furner create Anthony Milford too?

How was Bellamy allowed to miss the post match media conference ... There was a rule in place saying that the head coach had to perform a post match media conference after every match (along with 1 player).

this was put in place after Bennett put himself on a media ban after the media refused to stop asking questions about why he dropped Hodges when he signed with the Roosters.

I hope they don't let him get away with it.

They weren't struggling players but they were young men who left their family and friends here in Brisbane and moved to a state far from home to chase a dream. A place where Rugby League at the time was foreign with few supporters.

No just a jockey who had quit league, a sausage roll before game eating half and a back rower who couldn't get through a Storm pre-season.

To be a rookie coach go to Melbourne and a club in a mess and develop the players he has was a gutsy call.

Easy would of been stay at Brisbane and not touch the Storm basket case.

They were struggling players. All three.

He's got natural talent but it's gonna take a good coach to make him consistent.

He will be one of the best if he has the right structures in place to take advantage of his skills - something Bellamy excelled at and it's why whenever you see an exciting set play it's called a "Melbourne play"

Only on BHQ could a 57 year old guy who's looked like hes going to have a heart attack every week for the last 10 years retire and be called a coward. Keep it up guys, definitely not making yourself look stupid and immature.

Why the bait, AP?

Similar sentiments are being posted all over Twitter and LU, so not, it's not only on BHQ.

Cooper Cronk - Before Matt Orford left was a nuggety utility and in no way a natural playmaker, he is the definition of the incredible affect a coach and a system can do with hard work and application.

Cam Smith - Another guy who was a not so special kid who got passed up by the Broncos and others, under Bellamy's guidance he developed his playmaking, decision-making, defense, composure etc etc basically the things that set him apart from any hooker in history.

Billy Slater - Different to the other two he was always going to be great if given the chance but he was very error prone in his early days and Bellamy kept faith and gave him time to develop at fullback.

Anyone who says those three blokes would be the best in the game all on their own is kidding themselves, coaches can ruin players if they don't guide them, trust them or give them the right environment to flourish.

I don't disagree Buzz, but I have heard numerous times that the Broncos didn't pass on Smith, we wanted him, but he chose to go to Melbourne.

Current Broncos coach Anthony Griffin first spotted Smith at an Under-17s state rugby league carnival in Rockhampton in the late 1990s. "Physically he was not imposing, but he was a class above his peers," Griffin reportedly said later. "He played a bit of lock and hooker and right from early on he played with a bit of time, which is how he plays now."
Smith was courted by the Broncos and other clubs including the North Queensland Cowboys, the Canterbury Bulldogs, the Canberra Raiders and Melbourne. The Broncos' then hooker was a young Luke Priddis and the Smith family reasoned it might take their son years to get a first-grade start with the club, if ever. Smith went with the Storm.

Great article too. Some great stories about the current Australian and Queensland captain.
