NEWS Ben Ikin puts his **** on the block

A working bin?
They were both garbos back in their BRL days. Parry especially hates bins, one time on Ben Ikin's old podcast they had an interview with him and he kicks seven shades of shit out of every bin within eyeshot every time someone scores against the Cows. One time he threw a metal wastepaper basket out of his window!

I'm not surprised Ben Ikin is not going to get it. Its history repeating itself. I remember when the Broncos CEO position was available 10 years ago there was a push for Gene Miles to get it. They gave the position to Paul White. The position is much about commercial and business as its about football.

I remember Channel 9 gave Eddie Mcguire a shot as CEO. I don't know all the nuts and bolts of it, but I don't think it was a success.

It says in Fairfax if Ikin misses out on CEO, it's unlikely they will create a position in the football department for him due to the current finances of the game.

Ikin, a former player and one of the game's most respected analysts, was an early favourite but his stocks appear to be sinking slightly as the club expands its hunt for White's replacement. Ikin had hoped his football smarts would carry him a long way, however it is understood the club favours an all-rounder who is across both the football and business aspects of the Broncos business.

The suggestion of Ikin returning to run his former club has gone down well with disgruntled fans but, should he miss out on the CEO role, it's unlikely a bespoke position at the pointy end of the football department would be created for him to cater to his skillset, which he believes can help the club turn around its fortunes.

Even for an outfit with deep pockets like the Broncos, the chances of specialist roles being crafted are slim to none given the finances of the game and the desire to slash spending.

Peter Nolan fills the role of head of general manager of football operations and, even with the dire state of the side, his position looks safe for now.

That could, however, all change when a new chief executive and coach are in place. But whether Ikin would settle for a lesser role remains to be seen given his media standing and desire to make the shift from the television screen to the boardroom.

Brisbane host the in-form Panthers on Thursday night as they try to avoid the wooden spoon.

If I'm reading things correctly ( big if I know ) I think Ikin will win the job.
my reasoning is pretty basic but prior to his interview he actively engaged in the banter about his CEO aspirations but since then has deadbatted or totally ignored everything thrown up. 2 plus 2 equal f...

No idea why Nolan’s job is supposedly safe he should be one the first ones punted.

His demeanour on TV has certainly shifted.

That is possible as well but I don't think the others would be throwing it in his face if that was the case

I think hes a shoe in. Speaking from the business world he has his eyes open (from what we see publically), has served on boards and is young enough to not be ground down into a specific mould. If i was a majority shareholder i would take his enthusiasm over an old dog any day. Its much easier to steer enthusiasm than instill it.

Paul Vautin has stated his support for Ben Ikin as CEO of the Broncos. The problem with Vautin's comments is all it's done is outlined the problem with appointing Ikin for the role of CEO. Vautin suggests Ikin doesn't have alot of experience in the corporate world but could get them right on the paddock. He suggests he may need help with the corporate side of things but the Broncos 'can pick someone else to do that'.

Vautin despite his good intentions has given Ikin a good reference in why Ikin should be general manager of football operations for the Broncos but not CEO.

Rugby league great Paul Vautin has boldly thrown his support behind Ben Ikin to take over as CEO at the Brisbane Broncos, and recruit Storm coach Craig Bellamy as his first order of business.

The Broncos showed glimpses of promise in a commendable 25-12 loss to ladder-leaders Penrith at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night.

With Vautin able to identify the building blocks of a strong foundation starting to emerge at Red Hill following the loss, he emphatically called for the franchise to hand Ikin the reins and spend no expense in luring Bellamy north.

Ikin, a former Bronco and the youngest player to be picked for an Origin match, has submitted his application for the chief executive position made vacant by Paul White at the end of the year.

"Look I don't know who will coach but first of all they have to get a CEO and to me, there is only one person, that's Ben Ikin," Vautin told Macca's Golden Point.

"Ben played for the Brisbane Broncos, he won a comp with them as a five-eighth. He's 42 years of age, it's the prefect age for him to enter into this realm of being a CEO of a club.

"The business end of every rugby league club is what happens out on the field, that's the core of the business.

"I know Ben, I know how smart he is and how intelligent he is, he can get them right on the field, that's for sure. In the corporate world he might need a bit of help, but you know what; pick someone else to do that.

"I think he's worthy of a shot as the CEO, and I believe he can turn this club around in the next 10-12 years. He's a very smart man, he knows everyone in town, he's got the backing of News Limited – I think he's the perfect choice. That's what they've got to do first."

Sweet, we've only gotta wait until 2030-32 to see some success under Ikin's regime.

Yeah, wasn't the most eloquently put statement from Vautin but I know what he means and where he is going with it. Ikin could be the CEO for the 10 years or so and have some decent success.

I don't like Ikin, he has an ugliness that erks me.
