BHQ Picks the Broncos team: MAKE-UP OF THE BENCH - DISCUSSIO

While we are in the process of finalising our starting line-up, which is all but signed sealed and delivered, I thought rather than throw up the bench formation that I believe we should roll with, I would open up for discussion across the board and see what is the most popular before I put the bench positions to the vote. I reckon this would be much more effective than putting up the rest of the squad and then getting everyone to vote for their 4 bench players.

So what should the make-up of the bench be? Some options:
-1 utility, 1 backrower, 2 props
-3 props, 1 backrower
-2 props, 2 backrowers
-1 utility, 1 backrower, 1 prop, 1 outside back

Etc Etc Etc.....

What do we all reckon??

Re: BHQ Picks the Broncos team: MAKE-UP OF THE BENCH - DISCU

I'd go with the first option:
1 utility, 1 backrower, 2 props

But 1 utility such as Glenn fills the role of a backrower, so I would alternatively put 1 utility and 3 front rowers.

Considering the run on side thats been picked doesn't include Gillett there could be an arguement made that there would be no need for Glenn on the bench with Gillett there who can play that utility role from the second rower position, you could have for example Hunt or Norman there to provide a serious playmaking option from the bench and build experience for the future like they did with Lockyer early on in his career before he went fulltime at fullback.

I want Hunt at 7 and Glenn at 14.

The good thing about having 1 utility, 1 backrower and 2 props is that our utility will actually be a backrower too. So it'll end up being 2 backrowers and 2 props. I don't class Ben Hunt as a utility either considering he can only cover 2 positions at best.

On another note: I hope we don't end up with Hunt on the bench. Some teams are suited to having a hooker on the bench, and those teams are the ones that usually have very strong forward packs. The way I see it, our pack isn't THAT strong therefore putting someone like Hunt on the bench will seriously weaken our go forward

Hunt can play 5/8th, Halfback and Hooker, thats not 2 positions thats 3, he can also provide key playmaking areas in those positions that neither Glenn or Gillett can do and thats assuming Gillett is on the bench, thats not to say they can't cover the position that I will agree, but there are advantages there you won't have.

As for seriously weakening our go forward this I disagree with the recruitment of Ben Hannant, which gives Henjak more options to strengthen not only the starting props but those on the bench as well, not to mention the plentiful options available for a quality backrow to allow Thaiday to play as a frontrower and the workload Parker gives to the side, quite the opposite IMO.

But how often will we need our five-eight or halfback covered during a game? Very rarely. Glenn can cover just about any position on the field, even 5/8. (And IMO, can do JUST as good job covering hooker) The time when you really need a utility is when your centre, winger, or fullback go down.

Hunt is a waste on the bench. We need to concentrate on having a strong pack this year, we were the weakest pack in the comp last year and the inclusion of Hannant will make a big difference but it won't make our pack be a front runner in the comp unless we get out forward rotation right IMO.[/quote:2wvgtffn]

Well to be honest mate if your that concerned about getting forward rotation right I wouldn't really consider Glenn as adding anything considerable to the strength of our forward rotation so to speak and one has to question the wisdom in having both Glenn and Gillett(based on the side thats been selected) there who you can argue can do the same role, especially not with the starting side picked that see's 3 backrowers who are either 80 minute players or very close to, when just one of those players could handle the job (and lets be honest if it came down to a pick between Gillett and Glenn, its Gillett), instead if your looking to strengthen it then I would be looking at Gillett as the player covering that utility role and bringing in someone who can play in the front and backrow, you would gain more from that IMO then by having both Gillett and Glenn on the bench.

Yeah but my point is, it'll be pointless having BOTH Glenn and Hunt on the bench. We could easily have another forward instead of Hunt as Glenn can do what Hunt does (and do it just as well) and Hunt is taking the place of another go forward man. Having Glenn and Hunt is double dipping. It's one or the other IMO.

Ok lets say it is pointless to have both Glenn and Hunt there on the bench, then if your goal is strengthen the forward rotation of forwards then realistically your going to achieve more by having Gillett as the utility and another forward who can realistically add something to both the frontrow and backrow when they are there, Glenn is solid in the secondrow but I can't see him of any value in the frontrow, thus your better off with a forward who can.
