also add to that Kevin Walters is far far better than our second choice options at fullback KHunt and O'Neill.

for realz.

Walters ftw.

the only other fullback capable of saving the same amount of tries that looked like definite tries is billy slater, and he's well on his way to being one of the all time great fullbacks (if he already isnt).

I am a fan of slater but he fell off two tackles that led to tries last start.

You crack me up

I let you in on something, he isn't.

Only fullback I would say is better than Lockyer defensively that I have seen is Luke Patten, he is so consistent and so safe and his positioning is second to none. Obviously he isn't a quarter of the attacker Locky was in the no.1 but he is a tremendous defender.

I think 5/8 because he was so damn good in 2006!
I'm happy for either though and it's hard to vote in either spot.

I'm of the opinion that he was always the world's best five-eighth, played out of position at fullback. Imagine the reputation he would have if he'd been in the 6 from the start.

+1. He only ever played fullback out of necessity. Broncos let Willie Carne go at the end of 1996, and there were no ready replacements at fullback, Kevin Walters had the five-eighth position sewn up, and Lockyer HAD to be in the starting side.

If he'd played five-eighth at the peak of his powers he'd be rivalling Wally as the best ever five-eighth.

Fullback for me, for two reasons, because I want to fit Kevvie in at 5/8 and plus I think Lockyer's form at fullback surpassed that of O'Neill and Hunt.

I'm saying 5/8. He was a great fullback, no doubt about it, but has always been more involved and with the clear vision found in a halves player. Agreed, I think he could've been even greater if he had been a 6 from the start. Really want Kevvie in the team too, but will have to find a spot for him on the bench because Locky should be wearing the 6 IMO.

However, if you put him at five-eighth you risk him missing out because there'll be sentimentalists who pick Lewis.

sentimentalists is spelled incorrectly here. It's actually m-o-r-o-n-s.

Isn't that a cult in mid-west America Mick?

even the best miss tackles. slater has saved more tries that no other fullback could possibly have saved than probably any other ive ever seen. he kept the broncos from beating melbourne in the final in 2008 with a stellar try saver on carroll iirc, and his numerous 'slide in and get between the ball and the ground' havent been done by anyone else.

Well you would say that, since Slater's the only fullback you watch :P Frankly I don't think he's that good one-on-one. The ones he saves are when he has a lot of help. That's not a criticism, Locky was the same. Just saying, give credit to guys like Inglis and Smith who are almost always there helping him.

Rock: no shit. I'm in agreeance with Locky being classed as a fullback for this exercise. Just saying if circumstances had been different I have no doubt he would be regarded as the equal of Lewis or close to it. They weren't, so he isn't.

What? The dirty tactic with his feet which is illegal?

Not always using his feet Nashy. Sometimes he gets his whole body between the ball and the ground before the try scorer tries to force it. A la Matt Sing, who was without doubt the best try saving defender in the history of rugby league.

which is NOW illegal, but wasnt when he did it.

and no, thats not the only ones i was talking about. but if i was, it was a legitimate and excellent way of saving tries that were absolute certain tries.

the ones im talking about are like coxy said, where he gets his entire body in there. does it more than any fullback i can remember, and has saved many deadset certain tries by doing it.

the tackle in the 2008 final was actually on ben hannant: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg4AAmxTjdI at 2.05 or so.

Lockyer was a far better fullback than 5 / 8 in my opinion. In his younger days, his ability to link with his outside backs on kick returns ( as mentioned ) was brilliant. The role that Karmichael has played ( the extra 5 / 8 in attack ) was also a Lockyer trait.

His greatest strength was his ball running and linking plays, certainly not his ball playing and kicking game.

Our younger readers would be probably unaware of the young Lockyer's game and how it contrasts with the second phase of his career.

The young Lockyer era reminds me of the greatest shame of all... the injuries that ravaged Phil Lee's career.
Now there was a guy who could have been a superstar.
