His greatest strength was his ball running and linking plays, certainly not his ball playing and kicking game.

Lockyer was our best tactical/field position kicker from the start and probably still is.

seriously though - the only people who could say lockyer is a better 5/8th than a fullback are the people that never saw him play fullback.

when he was at fullback, if he didnt play in an origin we lost - it was as simple as that. at 5/8th, not so much. sure thats got to do with thurston/prince, but its more the fact that he was a better player back then. he was the one making breaks, stopping tries, setting up tries through his pace/footwork/passing - not the one who is a turnstile in defence, or couldnt break the line to save his life.

Ha! We also lost plenty when he was at fullback. Queensland was pretty poor from 2000-2005, with just 2001 where Queensland was very good (and Locky at his peak IMO).

well we *shouldve* won one of the games in 2000 (the first one), we won in 2001 with him being the clear standout, and again we *shouldve* won the 2002 series (instead of just retaining the trophy). yes we lost lots with him there, but if he wasnt there we wouldnt have won a single game throughout that whole period, guaranteed.

Gut I disagree about Lockyer's kicking game.
It really isn't much chop.
Think about the number of times he was able to get restarts...
Not many.
Think about the number of times his long kicking gamer finds players on the full.
Lots.

Wallace buys and sell Lockyer as a kicker.

These days or his fullback days?

In his fullback days Lockyers kicking was sublime. In 06 it was excellent too. Only since his injury have I really noticed his kicking game becoming average.

I think based on the course of his whole career, he was better at fullback. But based on when he was in his best form, you can't go past his 2006 season where everything he touched turn to gold.

Was good of you to write a whole post about 2008-2009, forgetting the other 12-odd years of his career in first grade.

DId you forget which player you were talking about, or are you just sure Lockyer is a new addition to the team in the past couple of years.

I assure you. He's been here for a lot of years. I understand where you maybe getting mixed up. He's also referred to as Locky, or Greatest Player in the World.

alot of this talk about Locky not being the same the last 2yrs also has abit to do with the fact Wallace has stepped up abit and now Locky doesnt need to do as much on the field. We are so used to Locky running everything we think something is wrong with him now with Wallace slowly taking over.

he was rubbish for most of 2009 though, thats not really debatable.

Guess that's why his team got to within one game of the GF then?

Case of tall poppy syndrome - his 2008 was worse then 2009

Its highly debatable as said above 1 game away from the Grand Final. His still as great as he always was. His style just chances with the game.

read what i said.

he was rubbish for MOST of 2009. he was. yes, he picked up at the end of the season, but even when we were winning at the start he wasnt really doing anything apart from missing lots of tackles and kicking to fullbacks on the full. he was out injured for a while, came back too early like always, sucked, got injured again, then got better at the end of the year.

remember, you dont have to play well all year to make the finals, and we didnt. you guys *do* remember that we lost 7 out of 8 consecutive games there, most by close to 40 points, dont you? us getting within one match of the grand final doesnt mean lockyer played great all season [icon_lol1. . if that was how it worked, youre all saying that stu kelly was great, steve michaels was great, and even worse - shane perry was great. not how it works guys.

he had a poor 2009, just like 2008. had glimpses of his good form, but for MOST of 2009 he was well below par.

I absolutely agree AP. I think Lockyer has been pretty ordinary for parts of the last two seasons.

Anyway, I'm going to lock this up now because I think it's pretty clear that Locky will be put into the fullback category!
