PLAYER Billy Walters

What role should Billy Walters play?

Actually, @McHunt stands alone in that he believes Kev has deliberately blocked attempts to bring in better players purely so that Billy can retain a relevance to our squad, and therefore justify a contract.
I didn't say I "believed" that. I asked specifically - and Jesus fucking Christ I'm tired of clarifying this over and over - at what point would you suspect this was happening, and the question was aimed at next season.

I do already suspect Kevvie has managed to put his paw on the scales in Billy's favour, but what I suspect and what I "believe" aren't the same thing.

In fairness to me, that guy has so many stupid takes it is hard to keep up.
Remind us again what happened when you threw that massive crowdsource tantrum about Payne being suspended, before you knew the details of the case.

I just don't understand the argument of favouritism and nepotism. Billy earnt a spot in the squad through hard work, not raw talent. He was never paraded or touted to be THE hooker we need and in reality i don't think he held back progression of anyone in those roles that he played.

The way he was used and minutes wasnt the best, but our only other options were Turpin and Paix. He played better than Turps and Paix got heavyily inured twice. He played with heart and effort. Mistakes yes but i dont think anyone expected him to be Cam Smith or Adam Reynolds.
Billy earned his spot through lack of alternatives. No other reason.

Everyone gets it mate, it is just that you and @McHunt prefer to go the negative route (strange given how beneath @McHunt being negative is) and most others try to hold out hope and want to give Kevvie the benefit of the doubt.
Our views are fairly tame compared to the comments I've seen posted in various places - Twitter, Reddit, Courier Mail - responding to Billy's signing.

As you know, I'm fine with being negative about players, coaching, tactics, selections, etc. I'm only against the kind of conspiracy theories and personal vendettas you jack off to.

No one is arguing this I don’t think except one or two posters. The issue was summed up really nicely above about misguided loyalty.

No one can legitimately or fairly argue that Walters didn’t deserve a spot above Turpin. He certainly didn’t deserve a spot above Gamble in the halves but when players like Haas spent the last month or so phoning it in, Walters was still giving his all.

He earned an extension and what he lacks in talent, he more than makes up for in effort areas, our side needs so much more of this.

Let’s just see what happens next season before we start going down the nepotism path. If Walters is keeping out a Mam, a Paix or perhaps even a Smoothy, then let’s come back at it.

Billy had the biggest balls in the team .
The only guy with some agro .

Billy did nothing wrong. He is serviceable in a couple of rolls and will be good to have around for injury cover. The only thing is if others are performing he shouldn't stand in their way. I don't think he did this year, he earned his spot in the 17. Turpin and co didn't. Walters senior needs to go into next season with a mind to reward form, not promises.
None of Billy's critics are saying he did anything wrong. The criticism is aimed at the club for landing us in the position where he's our best option in a critical spine role.

Anyone done a welfare check on mchunt?
No surprises here. He was always going to extended, and two years was already penciled in. I was hoping he mightn't be after his uncle was let go. I was hoping for more of a shakeup in the roster. I am disappointed we haven't signed a more damaging utility.

Hard to have the biggest balls in the team .
When you aren`t in the team ... Gamble is a sledger not a hard bastard .
He was playing through injury.

I agree with you on that. The club needs to fix this, we can't just have battlers in this position. The modern game demands more from Hookers and we just haven't done anything here. We have to see what next year brings, hopefully somebody steps up next year be it Paix, Walters or Smoothy.

It's amazing how poor our spine management has been. For whatever reason the club went all in on positions that you can just go out an fill, forwards, centres and wingers. What the hell is with that.

absolutely agree.

although Billy is a handy 14. which is all he was originally signed to be (utility/fringe) ... unfortunately due to form/fitness he was required to be our number 1 hooker this year.
Horseshit. Our best win of the season was against the Eels with Turpin and Paix sharing the dummy half role. They only got the chance because Billy was unavailable. The next week he replaced Turpin, played 60 minutes, and we got thumped by the last placed Tigers. There was no evidence he was continually picked on "form." After he failed in the halves, he got picked either at 9 or 14 every week.

I'm fucked if I know. I think we had the cheapest spine in the comp this season. Meanwhile we're paying our forwards a mint.

Like who?

Turpin played 40 minutes and made 1 run for 4 metres in the Eels game. 21 tackles, 1 missed and 1 ineffective; 2 errors. Against the Tigpies Billy played 59mins, ran 8 times for 80 metres, had 2x line break assists and a try assist, a tackle break, an offload, a 46m DH run. 31 tackles, 2 missed and 2 ineffective, no errors or penalties against.

You pick some strange hills to die on, my friend. Billy's not the reason we either won the Eels game, or lost to the Tigers.

Also need to point out the 3 weeks before our game the Tigers had also lost narrowly to the Eels (20-28) and Penrith (16-18) before being robbed against the Cows in North Queensland. Sure their season imploded after that but the Broncos also had a good run for a time and we all know how that ended too.

Who was available at the time? I don't recall it being anything but slim pickings. There were options in 2022 for 2023 and the club dropped the ball there, but Billy was already signed at that point.

Lol.... is the Billy argument about to happen all over again???

Below is a link to 4 pages ago in case anyone just wants to copy pasta their arguments all over ago 👍👍
