COMBAT Boxing / MMA Thread

The Hunt/Silva fight was the best fight I have ever seen.

Even though he knocked out Te Huna, it was awesome to see a dominant Shogun again.

Good for Soa Palalei to finally get his day in the sun in the UFC.

UFC 168 done and dusted, looks like that could be it for Anderson Silva after that horrific leg break, the power of leg checks huh!? kudos to Weidman taking the fight again to Silva and yeah he clearly K.Od Silva for a few seconds there

Rhonda Rousey vs Meisha Tate was a good match too, Rousey been taken into the later rounds and Tate holding her own on the ground, but Rouseys superior grappling got her through and the armbar, her standup straight up sucks LOL

Didnt give Browne the time of day to win against Barnett but wow a few elbows later its goodnight

All n all a good fight night even though a bit of a anticlimax in the main event

50 bucks to see my fighting hero go down like that. booooooo.

At least I've got Rousey and Aldo to cheer for.

Crazy how quickly a heavyweight fight can end.

Haven't watched it yet but that leg break was messed up. How was his reaction to it? I love how they get surgery hours later. Is that something that NRL players do too? Or do they usually wait a few days? Also Rousey was a dick on the show. I know it's probably just put on but I couldn't tolerate her. She is amazing though! Did you see Bigfoot vs mark hunt? Amazing heavyweight fight.

Haha I should probably have read a few comments before. I'll more than likely post on this thread a bit. Love MMA. My old man used to bring cage match videos home when I was like 7 and I've loved it since. Thinking of doing some next year. Went to a few lessons when I moved to Brisbane 3 years ago and my fitness was shocking and I was so sore by the end of it. Also did Silat when I was younger which I always enjoyed. The adults were insane.

So Gustafsson picked up the win tonight. Guess he's up for a rematch with Jones next. Hoping he can get the job done this time!

Where are the MMA fans here? This thread is very quiet.

About to watch UFC 175: Weidman vs Machida. I think Weidman can beat him, but it should be a tough fight. I don't think Machida will be strong enough.

Really impressed with Rory McDonald in his last fight against Woodley. He'll be the champ real soon, IMO.

Lots to be excited about in the UFC ATM.

MMA interest massively waned for me when the Jiu Jitsu guys stopped being competitive, then waned even more when the Lay n Pray specialists were unbeatable. Then it became almost non-existant for me when Anderson Silva broke his leg.

I got back into it today coz I still watch Ronda and I love Lyoto.

I can't stand any of the fighters with titles besides Ronda Rousey and Jose Aldo.

I am very interested in Bec Rawlings being on the Ultimate Fighter soon, though.

I'm with Penny. Long time MMA fan but I don't watch every event like I used to. It's gradually becoming less of a contest of martial skill, and more a contest of athleticism.

There are exceptions of course, but it just doesn't have the same vibe as it did when I was keen on it in the early to mid 2000's. The characters, styles, rivalries and fights just felt epic: Chuck, Wanderlei, Rampage, Shogun, Fedor, Aleksandr, CroCop, Nogueira, Randy, Tito, Hughes, Penn. It felt like Street Fighter come to life.

Nowadays it just seems like generic Wrestle Boxers as far as the eye can see, and an emphasis of quantity over quality on terms of events. I can appreciate technical acumen of guys like Jones but I can't get invested in the competitors/drama like I used to.

Funnily enough, I think my interest waned about the time I really got into League.

Yep, too many events has watered it down so much. Every card used to be stacked! I remember a time where everyone complained like a motherfucker that a main event of a card was going to be Rashad Evans vs Michael Bisping. Nowadays, that would be a very worthy main event.

I'm kinda with you guys. I still watch each event, but I end up fast forwarding boring fights and boring rounds.

Chuck Liddell is still my favourite all time fighter. I've still got Chuck posters on my walls!

It's certainly not like the old days. BTW, I can't stand Ronda Rousey - I think she acts like a petulant child.

She plays a great bad guy. My fave fighter at the moment.

After watching TUF series she was in, she's still a little girl. Totally ruled over by her overbearing mother. She has deplorable personable skills and a really bad attitude.

Amen on Chuck! Seeing an athlete decline on any sport is sad, but it's such an unforgiving sport. Instead of missing tackles or losing a yard of pace, the decline is generally sudden and severe. Seeing Chuck get lamped by Sugar, Shogun, and Ace was tough to watch.

He cops some flak from the younger crowd now, but in his heyday, he was just a beast. Loved how he'd conserve his energy, biding his time for the right moment before pulling the trigger. The combo he buried Tito with the first time is still my favourite finish to this day.

Couldn't care one way or the other about Ronda to be honest. I don't mind WMMA but there's a real disparity between many of the competitors, and it makes for less than compelling viewing. Can't say I watch TUF these days. As with the sport in general, my time is limited and I'd rather watch quality. Hence I typically only catch up on events that had good fights, rather than hitting the pub to watch them live. Regarding that, I'll have to catch Edgar vs Penn. Frankie has really grown on me over the years.

On a side note, damn I wish they'd sanction knees on the ground! I don't need stomps or soccer kicks but knees would really alter the dynamics of ground fighting.

They can knee on the ground, just not to the head.

The Edgar vs Penn fight was a snore fest. I watched it today. BJ was done 3 fights ago. You can tell he's just fighting for a pay cheque these days. The BJ that smashed Caol Uno in 11 seconds was a LOOOONG time ago.

Sorry, should have been more specific. I meant knees to the head. Makes the top control of North/South devastating and failed takedowns can be punished hard. Though even without it, I wish fighters would utilise more knees to the body from side control too. Granted it's harder to maintain control but it can really knock the stuffing out of an opponent.

Well that sucks. It sounded like Penn got pummelled, but I thought it might be worth a watch just to see Frankie lay the beatdown.

Out of interest's sake, who you got for Bones vs Gustaffson? I thought their first fight was a cracker, but I think people gave Gus too much credit because he exceeded their original expectations. He pushed Jones as hard as anyone has but I still had it 3 rounds to 2, despite pulling for him. Sadly, I don't see him faring any better in the rematch. Likely to be one I'll check out live though.

I thought the first fight was very close. Jones probably took it, but you could tell he didn't feel like he deserved it.

I think Gus can take the second one. Gus can take Jones's best punches, kicks and elbows and eat them. I think Gus is a better kick boxer and I think you might see him take this one to the ground and try and sub Jones.

I'd like to see it. For all his gifts, I've never warmed to Jones, perhaps because he's symptomatic of the changing of the guard, as all my old favourites call it a day.

Can't help but feel like Jackson and co will be very thorough with their planning for this one. I don't think they really thought Gus would take it to him like that the first time around, but will be more cautious this time. Would love to see Alex starch him with a lead uppercut / cross combo though. He looks a little ungainly at times but is quite adept at landing from odd angles.
