DARIUS Boyd says there won’t be any complacency issues for him in Origin II, after he put in an outstanding performance in Game One to prove he deserved to be fullback.

Boyd was handed his first No.1 jersey for the Maroons ahead of the June 1 series opener, after 23 appearances out of his preferred position, playing on the wing.

And it was a move that was overdue.

In his first game at the back for Queensland, the 28-year-old was the star of his side’s gritty 6-4 win over NSW and was unlucky to not be man of the match ahead of teammate Matt Gillett.

He knew how important it was to put in a strong performance in Game One to show coach Kevin Walters and the Maroons selectors that they were right to put their trust in him.

“I got a lot confidence playing fullback for Australia and Queensland and getting the wins too,” he told The Courier-Mail.

“I thought I played well (in Origin). I had a lot of pressure to do well given it was my first game. I had to show the coaches and selectors that they had made the right choice to pick me.”

However, Boyd also said there was no way he was going to rest on his laurels ahead of next week’s clash with the Blues at Suncorp Stadium.

With the Maroons one game up in the series, and walking into Game Two with the home-ground advantage, Boyd knows just how important this showdown is.

The Broncos star will be named at fullback for Queensland again and he said he still has a lot he wants to prove.

When asked if he was feeling complacent given his recent career-best form, he put it straight: “definitely not”. And he also knows the series is far from settled.

“Game One means nothing if we can’t come home and put a good performance in front of our fans,” he said.

“We’ve put ourselves in a really good position but we need to work hard. It’s going to be a tougher game than Game One.

“We have to prepare well and do our best ... hopefully we can come away with it.”

I know that the return of Boyd to the Broncos caused a fair bit of angst amongst some on here, but the way that this bloke has turned around not only his football career and form, but his life and outlook from what it was at Newcastle is pretty remarkable.

It is actually very inspiring for those that may be suffering from a mental illness to see what he has been able to achieve. I have nothing but respect for him and I am glad that WB brought him back. It would be great to see him rewarded with another premiership before he finishes up.

I'll be the first to put my hand up. The bloke went way beyond my wildest expectation, and actually did return to his 2010 form, so nothing but praise for him.

Still would've liked to see what Bennett would have gotten out of Barba...

No matter what he did, we wasn't going to make Barba the QLD and Aus fullback. I think we dodged a bullet getting rid of him.

You're probably right, but Barba has been very good for the Sharks, getting close to his 2012 form, so not impossible.

Close is probably a slight stretch, his 2012 season was one of the best individual seasons in NRL history, this year he's middle of the field in terms of fullbacks, a lot better than 2014 & 2015, sure, but not even in the realm of 2012.

Yes, 2012 probably cannot be replicated, but I disagree he's middle of the field. He's battling in a position with some of the best players in the current comp, and I think only Boyd and Tedesco are better, with Moylan, Coote and Munster pretty close too.

Boyd, Tedesco, Coote, Tuivasa-Scheck, Moylan, Munster, Inglis are the 7 fullbacks I'd have ahead of him, which puts him.. middle of the field.

I dunno if I could get Inglis ahead of him. At least Barba is actually a FB.

RTS and Inglis don't even register this season. I'd have Mitchell, Dugan, Hopoate, even Stewart ahead of them. As to the other 3... agree to disagree, but can understand why you'd think that way.

Fullbacks I rate higher then Barba. Boyd, Coote, Tedesco, Moylan, RTS (when fit), Dugan, Slater (when fit), Munster, Inglis and Wighton. Barba has always struck me as 'pin your ears back and run' and that's pretty much it. Those other fullbacks offer a lot more as players then he does.

What does Jed Bogan offer aside from slow play the balls as he grimaces and struggles to his feet before collapsing several times a game?
