DARIUS Boyd says there won’t be any complacency issues for him in Origin II, after he put in an outstanding performance in Game One to prove he deserved to be fullback.
Boyd was handed his first No.1 jersey for the Maroons ahead of the June 1 series opener, after 23 appearances out of his preferred position, playing on the wing.
And it was a move that was overdue.
In his first game at the back for Queensland, the 28-year-old was the star of his side’s gritty 6-4 win over NSW and was unlucky to not be man of the match ahead of teammate Matt Gillett.
He knew how important it was to put in a strong performance in Game One to show coach Kevin Walters and the Maroons selectors that they were right to put their trust in him.
“I got a lot confidence playing fullback for Australia and Queensland and getting the wins too,” he told The Courier-Mail.
“I thought I played well (in Origin). I had a lot of pressure to do well given it was my first game. I had to show the coaches and selectors that they had made the right choice to pick me.”
However, Boyd also said there was no way he was going to rest on his laurels ahead of next week’s clash with the Blues at Suncorp Stadium.
With the Maroons one game up in the series, and walking into Game Two with the home-ground advantage, Boyd knows just how important this showdown is.
The Broncos star will be named at fullback for Queensland again and he said he still has a lot he wants to prove.
When asked if he was feeling complacent given his recent career-best form, he put it straight: “definitely not”. And he also knows the series is far from settled.
“Game One means nothing if we can’t come home and put a good performance in front of our fans,” he said.
“We’ve put ourselves in a really good position but we need to work hard. It’s going to be a tougher game than Game One.
“We have to prepare well and do our best ... hopefully we can come away with it.”
