Brett Morris Signs with the Bulldogs

I read that the Knights are pressuring them to leave their manager now as well.

On the Morris signing, it looks like one of Hoffman's option is gone, we may keep him to play wing for us after all (unless Bennett views him as a fullback)

One rumor sounded like his manager got them to sign with the Bulldogs purely as leverage to get a better deal out of the Knights (and therefore renege before the deadline), which is pretty shady IMO.

I'm not sure he can't go to the Dogs.

They had so much money to throw at players earlier in the year, who have they signed since then? I doubt Morris would be on big money, and Hoffman. I think they could still afford him.

I hope for our sake, they can and they still want him.

Re-Signed: Tim Browne (2016), James Graham (2018), Timoteo Lafai (2017), Moses Mbye (2016), Josh Morris (2018), Corey Thompson (2015)

2015 Gains: Michael Lichaa (Cronulla Sharks, 2017), Jacob Loko (Mid Season: Parramatta Eels, 2015), Brett Morris (St George Illawarra Dragons, 2018), Curtis Rona (North Queensland Cowboys, 2016)

No doubt those re-signed players all got upgrades. I know there were a few teams after Mbye so he's probably on a bit.I'm fairly sure all of their gains had other clubs chasing them too. And they're not losing that much with Ennis, Brown, Burr, Inu and Sila. I don't know how they do it..

Would be pretty good to play them during Origin time next year. Half their team will be playing for NSW. No doubt we will be playing the Warriors, Eels and Roosters though.

The only loss on more than a minimum contract would have been Ennis. Even Inu IIRC was an opportune mid-season grab on the cheap because the Warriors were sick of his attitude. I know what you're suggesting and I agree. It's like a couple of clubs looked at what the Roosters are doing and have said "**** it, game on".

I really don't feel comfortable pointing the finger at other clubs - especially when we were investigated for cheating the cap and the suspect way it all ended.

That and the whole situation screams of paranoia, (there you go Bman) where we may as well sit down here with tin-foil hats and our Business 101 books trying to expose the opposition.

They've got a good roster but I wouldn't call it great. What makes it really good, and he isn't apart of the salary cap, is Des Hasler.

In terms of the Roosters roster, I have no problem accepting the explanation of it but they will lose players when new contracts come up. That is a shame in my opinion as we should be aspiring to make our comp stronger not spread the mediocrity.

anywho, I digress. I don't care if we were suspected or not, there still has to be questions about how the Dogs can afford him given TRex, Jorris, now Borris, Pritchard, Graham, Hodgkinson, Reynolds and especially Graham are all on big money. Lafai, Jackson, Klemmer, and Finucane on upgraded deals, the MatatatatatatatTatatatatata triplets and Lichaa not on small deals. It has to be questioned regardless of our own concerns.

The Mata'utia brothers haven't signed yet and if they do, it won't be till 2016 so the roster will be different.

Klemmer's deal was like $900k or a mill for 3 years, after he'd only played like 4 games.

Hodges > Morris.
Parker ~ Graham.
Oates >>>>>> Tim Brown.
Copley ~ Lafai.
Thompson < Maranta

Then there's Ben Hunt to boot. He must be on peanuts, otherwise we've easily spend more than the Dogs on re-signing players.

2015 Gains: 2015 Gains: Greg Eden (Hull Kingston Rovers, 2016), Mitch Garbutt (Melbourne Storm, 2017), James Gavet (Wests Tigers, 2016), Anthony Milford (Canberra Raiders, 2016)

Eden should be on peanuts and maybe Gavet is too. But Garbutt was signed for about 230k a season and Milford's stature is massively bigger than anyone the Dogs have signed, including Morris. And so far we've only officially lost Hannant and Yow Yeh.

So yeah, we must be over the cap.

Of course that is true but you are not taking into account long service and other concessions for Parker and Hodges and maybe Hunt too. Regardless or Milford's stature, Morris is an international and therefore on big money. And even not factoring all that in, our cap was questioned, so too then should the Dogs.

To quote myself and continue haha, JYY and Hannant were both internationals, fair bit of money freed there, the Dogs have only really lost Ennis.

But the Dogs roster is inferior to ours in terms of talent. We have more Origin players, more Australian internationals, more Dally M medallists, more current players in Four Nations squads. They have a peanuts fullback, a five eight who is on about 350k a year and a halfback who was an absolute nobody when he signed his current deal. They also have a below average backline that outside of the Morris twins has no expensive players.

Their pack is strong and Graham would be on big coin, but outside of Graham, we have them covered player from player. This time six months ago nobody is going on about how the Dogs have over the cap type talent, but now because they somehow made a decider they are. I don't get it, Brett Morris isn't worth that much.

But you are doing the exact same thing by saying the roster is inferior to ours and therefore cheaper. Look at the Dragons, their roster is terrible but they are in salary cap trouble. Talent on a roster is not always an indicator of their value and people have been quietly questioning the Dogs I'm sure as it was well reported that Pritchard, Kasiano, Eastwood and Graham are all on really big dollars, plus the upgrades given that has been reportedly big. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they must be over the cap for sure but all I am saying is that it should be questioned.

I agree completely that talent on the roster does not equate to salary cap values.

But I just don't see the contracts to make me question the Dogs. Of their backs, only the Morris brothers and Reynolds would be on more than 300k IMO, and neither Josh would be on much more than that. Brett is a winger, so it's hard for me to see him being on more than 400k. T-Rex is clearly overpaid, Graham is deservedly on big money and Pritchard would be too. Eastwood I'm not sure how big but given the Salary cap these days is like 7m and has gone up a decent amount since T-Rex was signed, I just can't see it.
