Brisbane Broncos tipped for giant halves shake-up

Do everything to sign Oates.

Tbh Im not as bothered as I was 6 months ago about the proposition of losing oates. If he truly wants to play 2nd row that bad then let him.

He doesnt have the upside in the 2nd row that our young players do. Sure, he will kill it for a season (and everyone on here and in the media will be saying how much we have stuffed our recruitment and he will then become a mainstay of the maroons because he isnt wearing a broncos jersey) but I cant see him sustaining it longer then a couple of games a season. Determination to prove the broncos wrong and the element of surprise (added with the hype from the media on a player once they play for another club) will get him a great first season but he was gassed in origin playing on the wing, and doesnt make great decisions defensively quite often.

He does have a great hit in him though and runs great lines and could prove to be a great second rower, but with sua and fifita jnr they have already shown to have the more complete second rower package.

The money would be great to give to give us a more well rounded squad. 1 cheap but experienced winger to plug the hole if needed, 1 cheap but experienced prop to guide the ypung ones again, and 1 solid option at half that can truly put the pressure on the others to perform or perish...

I would agree if we had some good wingers coming through the system.. That's our biggest weak spot right now. In comparison to clubs like Penrith who just churn out 1-2 NRL standard outside backs every year seemingly.

Staggs, roberts, boyd, isaako, opacic, bird, kahu, pearson, farsnworth (18 years old?), shibisaki (still under 20 i believe?) to fit into 5 spots with a couple of solid back ups. we arent as flush as we are in the forwards of course but add in 1 cheap but experienced specialist winger to cover if our juniors dont develop then i think we are quite strong there

A knock on effect of our great young forwards is we dont need oates’ metres from our half as much as before. Still great to have, but we arent as desperate for it as we were before. We just need a winger who can finish tries and doesnt make mistakes

Now they are saying they are the best young forward pack in the competition and Brisbane should win 1, if not 2, premierships in the next 5 years. You have to take what they say with a grain of salt. Before the season started many 'experts' were predicting a Cowboys v Eels GF, the only GF they'll be playing for is the wooden spoon GF.

Anthony Don is off contract and the Tits supossedly have offered him less than $180k which he is on now.
I'd happily take him for $180k to replace Oates for a couple of years.
