Broncos Confirm 2018 Trials

I really want a strong game from Haas in this trial game. Haas could definitely be in the 17 come round 1.

Interesting to see which names made it given the indication of it being a seconds team. Isaako, Allan (on the wing), Opa, Fai, Mago.

Gives a bit of clarity around heirarchy of positions.

Pearson getting first shot at wing??

Savelio, Mago, Fai, Hass down the pecking order for forwards. Looks like Sims, Lodge, Ofa, TPJ and Sammy basically confirmed as the middles for round 1.

There’s 5 players in the squad who could nab a spot.
1.Issako he is most favoured to take over Oates wing spot and can show off his utility values in the trials.
2.Opacic he can put himself first choice back up centre and a starting spot round 1 for bird.
3.Haas his size and skills can definitely be put on show and prove his ready.
4.Allan he’s in the same boat as Issako should he impress he could take the wing spot especially if Kahu moves to centre as well.
5.Savelio his got high regards from super league now it’s time to live up to the hype.

only 3 of those are realistic chances to grab a spot in round 1.

Issako and Opacic could nab spots with good showing, especially with Bird unlikely to be fit and Oates potential move to the forwards.

Savelio could grab a bench spot with a good showing.

unfortunately for Haas, Oates potential move to the forwards (not to mention the addition of Lodge to the squad) will likely get in the road of Haas making an unlikely appearance on the bench in round 1. in fact given the way Bennett typically develops his forwards, he may have to wait until 2019 for his shot.

Allen simply isn't ready yet, and that is before you take into consideration the rumours he has fallen out of favour (or at least down the pecking order)

What is the point of this game in all reality given there aren't really any players in there with a realistic shot at FG in round 1?

Are you forgetting that we have a vacancy in our backs atm there’s a centre and a wing spot available.

Add in dargan (a nsw under 20s halfback from last year), tagatese (an nrl veteran of 150+ games who won a premiership 2 years ago), Pearson (a young gun winger with decent wraps and nrl experience), and sua (our youngest ever starting forward debutant who won under 20's Anzac test mom last year) and you have our reserve grade squad...

Is it only me who is excited about that? Our depth is deadset ridiculous, particularly in the forwards. If dargan lives up to his talent and a couple of outside backs fire we won't be lacking ANYWHERE...

Bennett's succession plan with forwards is well known but he has thrown forwards in the deep end before. Offa went straight from Holden cup to nrl, Dave Taylor was real young when he got his first taste, if haas is the goods like everyone says then I wouldn't rule it out

Promising Brisbane forward Payne Haas will make his top flight debut in trial against Capras
BRISBANE will unleash a forward likened in style to Cowboys wrecking ball Jason Taumalolo when teenage tearaway Payne Haas makes his Broncos debut on Saturday night.

Two years after rejecting interest from NFL scouts, the powerful Haas will make his first senior appearance for the Broncos aged 18 years and 70 days in a trial against the Central Capras in Theodore.

With coach Wayne Bennett resting his big guns, the hitout will be crucial for Todd Murphy, who will start at five-eighth in his bid to clinch the No. 14 utility spot for Brisbane’s premiership opener against the Dragons.

But all eyes will be on front-row monster Haas. At 116kg and 194cm, he is 3cm taller and 3kg heavier than Taumalolo and is tipped to break into the NRL this year after an impressive pre-season with Brisbane’s senior squad.

Haas is one of the most promising up and coming forwards in the game.
Despite his hulking frame, Haas has claims to being the fittest young forward in rugby league, thrashing his more senior Broncos teammates to win a 1.2km time trial in December.

The off-season departure of Adam Blair and Herman Ese’ese has decimated Brisbane’s front row but the Broncos are banking on Haas to step up — starting against the Capras in central Queensland.

Veteran Broncos enforcer Sam Thaiday said he was blown away by the Australian Schoolboy’s mix of size, strength and aerobic power.

SMASH: Bash Brother got his power from league

PRE-SEASON: Every team, every trial

“Payne Haas has been training the house down,” Thaiday said.

“Payne is a big boy but the best part about him is he has a motor on him and he can go for days.

“He ran our best 1.2km time trial (in pre-season), he smashed everybody’s times, so that is a huge thing for a 116kg front-rower.

“It’s exciting times at the Broncos. I get to see these hungry 18-year-olds like Payne develop into NRL players and hopefully I can play a role in helping mould them into some great players of the future.”

Todd Murphy will start at five-eighth.
Haas is a product of Keebra Park, the high school that produced Wests Tigers whiz-kid Benji Marshall, and was chased by all 16 NRL clubs before opting to play under Bennett at Brisbane.

Broncos assistant coach Kurt Richards will take charge of the squad, with new recruits Andre Savelio and Patrick Mago to feature alongside Haas in a youthful forward pack.

Former Cowboys forward Mago, 23, will start at lock, while the 110kg Savelio, 22, gets his chance to impress in the second row after four seasons in the English Super League.

Murphy and Intrust Super Cup journeyman Shaun Nona will start in the halves.

For 27-year-old Murphy, it is a golden opportunity to finally realise his NRL dream after failing to crack the top grade at the Cronulla Sharks.

Broncos team to play Central Capras in Theodore on Saturday night, kick off 6pm

Interchange: 14 Gerome Burns, 15 David Fifita, 16 Thomas Flegler, 17 Patrick Carrigan, 18 Myles Taueli, 19 Keenan Palasaia, 20 Eddie Blacker, 21 Kotoni Staggs. Coach Kurt Richards.

Haas will make a debut at some point this year if he is training as well as everyone says he is. I don't get this perception that Bennett only debuts forwards that are 25 or something lol. Sua? Ofa? Thaiday? Parker? Thorn? Gee? That's just forwards off the top of my head who debuted at 18 or 19 years old. There would have been twice that that I have forgotten I'm sure, plus the backs there'd be heaps more.

From what I've seen if they are good enough they are old enough for Bennett, the only thing is, sticking with them the whole season would depend on their mental attitude the whole year. 24-28 games in a year is a lot. But even ofa got the chance for that 3 years ago

We can talk all day about who has a chance to make a FG appearance and who doesn't. The fact of the matter is that any one of the squad can impress and put their hand up for promotion to the big boys sandpit. That's why these games are organised. For mine, I hope Opacic is able to show he is back to his best before his shoulders gave way. He has great defensive awareness and will make a handy cover for Bird especially when he gets drafted into the Cockies origin team.

Usually only back rowers. And yes, he won't stick with them the whole year because he's said publicly he rotates them to ease the strain on their younger, unseasoned bodies. Why we won't see him rd1
