It's the off-season, I'm starved for Rugby League action so let's discuss some history and get some general thoughts on the last ten seasons. What worked, what didn't work, favourite matches, terrible matches, general impressions on each season - let's do it folks.

2004
807553-karmichael-hunt.jpg

Is one of the most underrated seasons in the club's history. After 03, we looked like we were well and truly on the way down with a lot of our players ageing and not a whole lot being done on the recruitment front. In fact, before word of Lockyer's move to five eigth, our halves combination looked like a makeshift pairing between Motu Tony & either Berrigan or Seymour.

However, Bennett made some bold choices and they paid off. The biggest of which was the move of Lockyer to five eigth. If I was an active member on here back then, I reckon I would have written that move off - Lockyer was the world's best fullback and was on track to becoming the Greatest of all Time - why mess with that, especially when the alternative is a utility in Motu Tony...and whatever the hell a Karmichael Hunt was.

Seriously, when I heard of this newbie called Karmichael Hunt, I thought we had signed some pretty-boy hairdresser straight from some posh school (Churchie, close enough) and his opening ten minutes in first grade did little to change my mind. To his credit, he kept getting back up and would go onto have a marvellous year - seriously, who could have predicted that? The 16 year old Australian Schoolboys lock becoming the NRL rookie of the Year, in a year that included SBW - amazing.

Back to Lockyer and while it was clear that he needed some work, particularly with his defence - he really gave us another option in offence and provided Seymour with the support he needed. It's a shame what happened to poor Brett that year - he appeared set for a good season, especially with the performances he put in when Lockyer had that short stint on the sidelines but before we knew it, both he and Barry Berrigan were gone for the season and we were really caught short in two key positions at the business end of the season. I thought Casey McGuire in particular performed an admirable job in the halves but basically any chance we had of being genuine contenders was lost when those two were ruled out.

It was the year we also bid farewell to the Raging Bull and Chief De Vere. While it was sad to see Gordie retire off the bench in his final game in a move that I think caused a bit of bad blood between him and Wayne - I thought he put in a very solid season for us and his leadership during the Origin period was very valuable. One of my favourite memories of that season was this barnstorming try he scored against the Storm in the Round 4 clash at Suncorp - I was there that afternoon and it's still one of the sweetest victories I've experienced @ 18-4 late in the first half, we appeared little chance of taking that one. Losing De Vere when we did sucked too, always a very handy player to have outwide, although his absence did lead to Corey Parker of all people kicking the match winner from the sideline against the Tigers at Suncorp.

Seriously I could write another 20 poorly structured paragraphs around 04 and every other season for that matter. Reminisce with me folks!

Great thread idea Pete I've been dying for some footy discussion as well.

Although I hated the ending to that 2008 Storm semi-final and will never watch it again and I cried myself to sleep that night (darn you Ashton Sims) it was a great game and shows what Rugby League is all about. Main reason why I brought it up was so I can share this story that happened the day after, I've always wanted to share it on here but I've never found the right thread to do so.

I was still devastated at losing like that and I went to Sunnybank plaza to calm myself down and forget about it. When I went to K-Mart a little Storm fan aged about 9 started taunting me in my Broncos shirt. He was giving me the loser gesture and bragging about how awesome his precious Storm were and mouthing off at me. A part of me was saying it's just a little kid let it go and I love children and would feel bad if I ruined a child's day but I was so close to superman punching that kid.

I thought of that guy Melbourne got busted for the salary cap scandal and spent a good few minutes thinking about his face at that time, I haven't seen him since but I'll give him a wink if I do.

Still not worth it. I was there at that game & I will NEVER forget. I'm not pissed at Ashton Sims though. I'm pissed at the little grub Slater denying Hannant the match-winning try by leading with his feet. When Ben went over, the screens cut to a shit of Bennett, in his final year with us, jumping off his chair. That an illegal play (as opposed to a dumb play by Sims) cost us a shot at the premiership, with a pretty under-rated team (especially the forwards), it's something I'll never be comfortable with.

In fact, anyone mind if I chip in with my take on the '08 season? It'll be later though.

Re: Broncos circa 2004 - 2013

Go for it Morkel - 08 is definitely a fan favourite.

I was at the game too, and if nothing else after one of the most dramatic weeks in the club's history it reminded me how much I care about this club.

Re: Broncos circa 2004 - 2013

I look back on 2008 with fondness. Lockyer was out for a good share of the season yet we were competitive and followed a disappointing 2007 with a strong 2008 with a 5th place. The semi-final performance against Melbourne was inspirational, the boys put the drama and hell from the last week behind them and came within a whisker of beating the defending premiers. The only regret I have about 2008 is how we lost that semi-final it still hurts me to this day, it would've made for a classic grand-final as we would've beaten the Sharks as we were in top form. I think a Brisbane V Manly 2008 Grand Final would've been a classic.

The only season from 2004-2013 I look back with regrets is 2005

.......I'll have to watch the replay now.

Re: Broncos circa 2004 - 2013

2008 bring back two great memories, the one and only great year of denan kemp and the return of Lockyer. Kemp was just a legend on the wing and worked so well with hodges. Lockyer just coming back from his knee reconstruction and in his first game back chipped to kemp for the match winning try and kemp's fourth of the night my favourite try (helped with my step dad who loves parramatta was next to me)

That semi against the storm is the most heartbreaking thing still. I was meant to go to the game but I was dragged to a family do. My gf was texting me the score and thirty seconds to go she text "Wayne Bennett is smiling" and just as I started to she text me again saying "I'm sorry they lost". Saw the replay will never forget Lockyer when he faced away from the team, tensed up and just screamed what I'm assuming was "f&@#" Ashton sims never got used by the broncos much after that

I actually think 3rd in 2004 made us look waaaaay better than what we actually were that year. We started well but when we went through a period where we were on a long winning streak, half of those games we deserved to lose and only one due to experience. We had absolutely nothing in attack that year and that was highlighted when we took on Canterbury at home and they crushed us and we had nothing all day. We limped into the finals where we got smashed in the first week and then couldn't score a point against NQ who werent exactly world beaters at the time. The offensive mentality seemed to be give it to lockyer and hope he does something.

Even still, I would prefer 2004 to 2013!

Not to mention the fact that Melbourne cheated to be in the position that they were. Also they played so dirty that game. Smith got suspended from some dirty shit he did to Thaiday, didn't help us though, just Manly. He should have been sent off.

I watched that game again recently. Stupid decision. I hate that game so very much. Don't watch it guys, not worth the anger.

Re: Broncos circa 2004 - 2013

I'm a huge fan of KHunt, but I think his first year was massively overrated. It wasn't really until 2006 where he became flawless under the high ball, excellent bringing the ball back and started showing a wonderful ball playing game. SBW would have probably won rookie of the year if he played more games.

Exactly, which is why 2004 is underrated because people just consider it a nothing year when really, it set us up down the road. In the end, the team had too many injuries to contend with - we lost two spine members and had to make do with Casey McGuire at halfback and basically anyone at hooker (Neville Costigan, Ben Ikin, Paul Green was another). Third was an incredible achievement and not one to really thumb your nose at.

Kid was only 17 when he made one of the most important positions his own - bit tough down playing it because he naturally got better when he was older...

That 08 semi final is the absolute worst moment in the clubs history, no contest.

This. I watched that game once. It was live.

I nearly broke my hand that night, and I will never watch it again. Ashton Sims cost us the game, I don't give a **** what anyone says. He is a piece of shit. Will never forgive him for the night he really fucking hurt my hand.

Re: Broncos circa 2004 - 2013

Agreed, I take most professional sport with a grain of salt but that 2008 loss was the most devastating ever, made even worse by seeing how gutted Lockyer was straight after the game. We beat the Storm, we win that premiership imo.

Re: Broncos circa 2004 - 2013

I was there as well and the next play after Simms dropped the ball seemed to be in slow motion - you could just see the inevitable try coming and there was sweet F all anyone could do about it.

Everyone was so pumped when Hannant "scored" but Locky going down on his knees in exasperation at the end is something I'll never forget.

Yep, fair point. I just remember my feelings at the time about it, just because we were so used to success. You're also right about setting us up for the future, 2004 and 2005 seasons were instrumental in us having that focus at the back end of 2006 to go on and win.

Re: Broncos circa 2004 - 2013

I mostly remember 2004 and 2005 for the disappointing fade outs in the final parts of the seasons. And we finished 3rd in both of them I think.
