Broncos' mid-season review

Haha I can believe that.

Still makes me laugh at all the st merge supporters when we signed him. What they wouldn't give for a guy with a bit of heart that is happy to do the hard yards not just the flashy stuff.

I think we can credit Supercoach, Anthony Griffin with the evolution of Daniel Vidot this year ;)

I get what you are saying, but I don't really agree. All credit has to go to Daniel for his efforts, courage, determination and his general life happiness of being back home and playing for the team he dreamed of playing for.

He's doing his job well, but I hope to see more as he fills the shoes of some great Bronco wingers of the past. Definitely on the right track.

I think he was being sarcastic mate :)

I actually think Hook has to be given at least a little bit of credit for a player playing well.

if he's going to be hung from the nearest post for someone going like a busted, it follows that he deserves credit for getting a player up and playing well.

You sunk my battleship.

wash your mouth out with soap ...

didn't you know that any player that plays well, does so in spite of hook ... and any player that players poorly, does so because of hook.

If Vidot was ever going to play well somewhere, it was the Broncos.

I think that's why a lot of us wanted Vidot to come here, even when he was playing poorly at St. George, because we could recognise that he was a strong runner and could be very handy under the high ball - which is virtually all that you need to be a Anthony Griffin winger.

He's taken the opportunity and largely made the most of it.

I'm still concerned about the bubble bursting one day but hopefully he continues to build. In recent weeks he's been getting the blunders out of his game which is a positive.

We are playing some very good footy of late and it's great to shut those so called critics up which is always great. Main highlight of the year so far is the rise of Ben Hunt who is repaying the faith shown in him after years of being a bench player. Main lowlight is the form of Ben Barba, I honestly feel if he doesn't get his confidence back he might turn into another Brett Seymour.

I thought the stats were very very good. If you were slightly above average in every department that is favourable and slightly below in the less flattering ones you'd be very pleased as a supporter. Well we are very much above average in the ones that count and it more than compensates for the less flattering stats. To be truthful I don't credit Hook with much of this as the overwhelming majority of NRL players know what to do and when to do it. The younger up and coming players may need polish but that is largely applied through experience and not some older guy jibbering in their ears at training.

The big thing for most coaches is the mental preparation , the mind set and that's probably the place where Hook deserves the most praise. I think a lot of the way a team plays can be attributed to a core of players , generally the senior group , who sit around and talk about the way they think they can get through other teams. If a coach is doing that job then he has to have the players onside like Bellamy clearly does. I just don't think Hooks that good a coach when he cannot see something as obvious as Hoggmans deficiency and if he can't see that then what else is missed.

I have been, and remain a little critical of aspects of his game as a winger, but there is denying his contribution to the team in the metres he makes, and it's not just how many, it's also the energy he sucks out of defenders trying to stop him.

We also need to kick to him a whole lot more.

Oh, and 5th on the table, 2nd on comp points, 3rd in points for, 2nd in points against, those are very good stats. for mine.

With you on all of this. I think he's been great for us but if we could involve him more, I think he could be even better.

Also, he's crossed the line a few times but failed to score due to his angle/handling/timing. If he can work on the little 1%'ers he could be an incredible asset to us.

Regarding our team as a whole with respect to a mid season review, I'm quite pleased. We have some ways to go, but we're looking much improved from last year. We're fitter, more committed, and most importantly, we're scoring points again (not just from kicks to the corner).

I find the low line break and tackle break stats quite interesting. Given our points aren't lacking, that implies to me that we're scoring many tries from clean passes and good lines in the opposition red zone? Compared to last year when we'd make ground then have no direction at all.

Having Milford next year will be great, and I think he and Hunt will be a great combo. Hopefully between now and next year we can bone up on our defence and rejig our front row options and rotations. I think we'll find our shortcomings in these areas will be our downfall in tight games against quality opposition.

Still see us coming bottom half of the eight this year, though top four isn't out of the question entirely. In either case I don't see us being serious contenders this year, but we can still come out stronger for the experience.

Since a fair few tries also get counted as line breaks, if we're scoring points but not getting LB's then there are two likely ways. One is from kicks. The other is getting down low and bustling over. The latter is great, because they show strength and determination which is what we want to see.

I'm a glass half full kind of guy and I think that we can finish in the top. There is no reason to think that other teams won't have problems towards the end of the year and we definitely can improve still. It's hard not to be optimistic when we appear to be succeeding in spite of some coach imposed impediment in the form of a non productive 5/8. Truly, if this team were to somehow add a more creative player in the 5/8 role then the sky's the limit. Parker being rested along with McCullough is no bad thing as we've just added a rested Thaiday to compensate.

Top four is realistic given a reasonable run with injuries and a very slight improvement in a few small areas.
